Standing nursery rhymes and limericks on their absurd heads, Funkadelic minted truck loads of witticisms--and of course, signature neologisms. The social and political commentary is all the way drenched in drug metaphors and odd surreal verses and music. Dig them and one does so at one's peril. Defamiliarization is what the Funk Mob perform in all manner of custom--linguistically and sartorially.
WTF so I had this song in my iTunes for years and listened to it 73 times before, and today I just listened to it again and there's a whole new verse at the beginning about a bull funking a cow that isn't even in this video and now the song is 3:37 instead of 3:22. WTF... it's still the same MP3 file, I don't get what's happening.
This is a great song. Those lyrics are great!! "Fool and the Gang", "Earth, Hot Air, and No Fire". "Crazier than a sex maniac in a whorehouse with a credit card" Superb!! Thanks for this post.
Funk used ta' be a baaaad word....and now these so-called 'artists (also known as [c]rappers)' can't make a decent song wit' out addin' an element or 2(...hundred) of the funk to their works. Credit is LOOOOONNNNG overdue to legendary architects of great music, especially to these brothas right here.
It turns out that "Little Miss Muffet" was hallucinating and saw a talking spider because her brain was resisting the functions of Glutamatergic reactions in the cerebrospinal fluids which led to those schizoid hallucinations. ...don't try this at home, but scientist are researching the cure that George and Little Miss Muffet did field studies on in the 70s and a breakthrough "clinical" treatment is projected in 3 to 4 years.

@rievans57 - "Talk about funk and don't know how; shoulda seen the bull when he funked the cow; funked her so hard she began to smoke; bull said 'Let's get in the bed and funk like folks" and I'm laughin' atcha - 'Ha Ha!'
@silverguitartom Brother either I'm in denial or you are. I haven't heard funk on the radio in almost decades. When I heard 112 use the synth sound with the song' Peaches & Cream that was the only reason I listen to it., the heavy synth sound, but it wont' funk. I love it, miss it, but it's dead!

Everybody's funking but dont know how, you should have seen the bull when he funked the cow, he funked her so hard he saw some smoke, said let's get in the bed and funk like folks..... Anyone have this song complete?

The funkiest jam i ever heard was night of the thumpasorous people at the municiple auditorium in KC MO.......we where all sitting waiting for the concert to start......when bass started thumping the funkist tune (vibrating the roof off that motha.......the funk lifted us all to our feet...gagga-googa..... Check it out!!!
I remember when this was first released, it blew everybody else out the water. This was our introduction to FUNK. And that it is. Still sound great. Uncut and Raw Funk on the highest level.
Hey funkateers: Hey just would have love to seen a concert just show casting the funkadelics and not the Parliament music. I love both music styles, but combination of rock and funk is great. Who saids a funk band can't play rock!!!. Hazel, Hampton, Shider, Blackbyrd, and Goins, exchanging guitar licks.
Of Funkin' course, i have all of the original vinyls! True funkateer don't smoke and tell! if u ain't funkin' ole skool style, u ain't sh*t!! Funk "used" to be a bad!! peace
James Brown the creator of the genre of course Sly and the family stone, early kool n the gang the fat back band, Mandrill n whole lot more not so well known early funk bands. George Clinton n his crew were more rock like with it especially with funkadelic he says himself that funkadelic was more like a black rock band and parliment was more the
u kno there so many types of funk its almost hard to compare the different styles it just depends on wat u like more me personaly i dig p funk n love it but im more into the early deep funk like early EWF (which ever one seems to seelp they had a very heavy n deep sound when they started but became more clean n polished later on down the line)
your definitely right, ive read a couple of books on it lol, cause im a geek, Funkadelic and James Brown would be described as jungle funk (more organic), and bands like EWF would be described as sophisticated funk, bands like EWF and the Bar Kays really polished their sound, but taking out the ruff guitar funky sound, and only keeping the heavy bass, hence disco lol,
ur right but lets not forget as i mentioned in the post before that bands like EWF and the BAR KAYS had a deep organic sound as well listen to some Pre 74 EWF or some early 70s lates 60s Bar kays n ull see that they were taken what james brown was doing n putting there twist to it.
Yeah Funkadelic was fucking with other funk groups. They did it all the time! When I was growing up in Detriot we would DJ for partys and the college type kids would hate when we put on Funkadelic. They were into groups like EWF. Dont get me wrong EWF was great. But P-Funk was for us Ghetto type kids! Its funny though. We would always wind up leaving with the college boys girlfreinds!!
I LOVE ALL THERE COVER ART WORK looks like THE EXORCIST "help ME " or what ever the demon wrote on her stomach lol I LOVE THERE own way of music "BETTER than THAN now" i started LISTENING to them like when i was 8 and I ALWAYS WILL BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF FUNK NATCHURE .....
BTW, this is the clean single version, the crucial opening lines 'everybody funkin that don't know how, should have seen the bull when he funked the cow...' etc. are missing.
This track is funny though, but it didn't affect the record sales of anybody he dissed. In fact EWF started getting bigger arounf this time. I'm only 29 but I'm up on the history. George hated EWF at first because of all the airplay they were getting. I guess both groups enjoyed the same type fame and sold out shows around the world. Your right EWF made sense we all knew what they were talking about. P-Funk tracks were the result of coke and weed. Clinton said so.
actually,he'd hadn't the slighted idea who p-Funk was,one of the vocalist told him was we were playing.when my brother and I came out,my dad ask us "What this about y'all playing some kind of Funadely..True Story.Today my brothers and I still laugh about it.
ewf was funking on their early days but they crossedover and made all those freaking ballads and disco tunes, sly was living up to his name, james was hounded by the government, kool and the gang was straight up disciples of the godfather but yes they too fell into placebo syndrome so did rufus.
I'm not trying to stir up any animosity or anything but if you look up the "Lets Take It To The Stage" lyrics on the Internet, you will see that its "I sat back". But either way, the context is that they were coming for the other funk groups.
It's ok phoneke, sometimes the translations were wrong. I'm from Plainfield, I know and I grew up on PFunk, went to school with the Kevin Goins, the younger Shiders, Quazar. Put on a good set of headphones, play it again and see if you can hear it. And then think to yourself why you would be hunting hogs in the woods? Peace.
I use to listen to this song all the time but didn't know what they were saying in the background. Now that I do, it makes so much sense. The groups that they were talking about were like fat hogs that they were about to gun down. Metaphorically of course.
In other words, they had their time in the light but it's time for Funkadelic. And if you dispute it Lets Take it To the Stage Sucka!!
I remember in 1977 I used that guitar riff in one of my father gospel songs on stage at the Holly Oak park center in Shelby NC..the Crowd went wild,,but I got my ass whooped that night..O the memories.Lol
......NewIffy.... I stand to be corrected....Jerome E. Brailey (BigFoot) did not play on this song......The drummer on this track was Ramone Fulwood (Tiki).....both are great drummers ........Great Songs Live Forever
NO DOUBT! LOL! "Slick and the Family Brick", "Earth, Hot Air, and No Fire"; "Slufus"; and "Fool and the Gang." Well, it was just George being George and having some fun at the competition's expense. Of course, George knew that HIS band put on the wildest live shows; this song was his way of laying down the gauntlet. "If you think yo' funk can hang with MY funk, well...LET'S TAKE IT TO THE STAGE!" Never mind that he took the "Grandfather's" band and made them even FUNKIER!
I don't think thats true at all.I think there is no dought that
Maurice innovated in a slicker & tighter way,but George's overall vision has been more enduring historicly. The concept's i believe were more clever and also subversive! They both where groups with a genius leader as well as genius players though.
I agree they both were innovative & powerfull,I just think that P-funk has had the more lasting impact.Having said that i saw EW& F when i was 12,(The All & ALL Tour)& it blew my head off. They were much more precise than P- Funk.
I'll be honest. I was more of EWF fan as a kid. I kind of looked at the whole P-FUNK thing as a bunch of silliness; great music but SILLY. But around the age of 20 (1994) I bought COSMIC SLOP, LET'S TAKE IT TO THE STAGE, and P-FUNK ALL-STARS Live. Totally opened my eyes, ears, and mind. TOP-NOTCH musicians! I realized that there really WAS something much deeper than what I had always regarded as "silliness." There's a whole philosophy in the grooves. GOTTA listen to the WESTBOUND stuff.
The classic Parliament Albums as well(Mothership Connection-Motor booty Affair). They are loaded with clever, ironic & satirical lyrics,& the most innovative & progressive music around.Bernie Worrell & the great horn section are featured more on these albums.(As opposed to the guitar assault of Funkadelic).
@rockjohnson80, EWF made too much sense. P-funk is timeless because they broke all the rules. GC, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy and crew developed a musical logic totally seperate from whatever else was going on, even though they used bits and pieces. Their records still sound fresh where other music from that era, including EWF, sounds dated.
In this case, same guitar riff throughout the song, long keyboard bass notes, outrageous lyrics, first diss song ever? Who else dared make a record like this?
You know I like EWF and P-Funk, but I hate to compare them. I have been in countless arguments about this over the past 10 years or so. Both groups had their own style which nobody else was doing. That made them who they were. EWF IS TIMELESS TOO. What planet are you from? Honestly all of it sounds dated from both groups, but it's all good music so it never gets old. It's real music. Earth, Wind & Fire made sense because Maurice White did his thing. Don't sleep on the fire.
obviously, u have been under the influence of a negative groove, cuz, if u was funkin' 4rl, u would know that George and Funk Mob have invaded the virgin walls of the hall and left P all over the place! if u listen closely, u can hearing the cummin'! Funk used 2 b a bad word, now everybody groovin'. just ask Ms. Muffet!
I would agree. I've always kind of looked at P-FUNK and EWF as being the opposite extremes on the funk continuum/spectrum. On the P-Funk side you had groups like Cameo, the Bar-Kays, SLY (the originator), Larry Graham, and Rick James. At EWF's end, you had groups like Rufus, the Commodores, and Bros. Johnson. Neither end is "better" than the other; it's up to the listener. Of course there were groups that could go EITHER way: SLAVE, Ohio Players, Gap Band. It's all-good, though.
spida slid on over...said....-,- " WHATS IN THE BAG BITCH"

I remember when this was first released, it blew everybody else out the water. This was our introduction to FUNK. And that it is. Still sound great. Uncut and Raw Funk on the highest level.

Hey funkateers: Hey just would have love to seen a concert just show casting the funkadelics and not the Parliament music. I love both music styles, but combination of rock and funk is great. Who saids a funk band can't play rock!!!. Hazel, Hampton, Shider, Blackbyrd, and Goins, exchanging guitar licks.

James Brown the creator of the genre of course Sly and the family stone, early kool n the gang the fat back band, Mandrill n whole lot more not so well known early funk bands. George Clinton n his crew were more rock like with it especially with funkadelic he says himself that funkadelic was more like a black rock band and parliment was more the
hiphopkid2 2 years ago
u kno there so many types of funk its almost hard to compare the different styles it just depends on wat u like more me personaly i dig p funk n love it but im more into the early deep funk like early EWF (which ever one seems to seelp they had a very heavy n deep sound when they started but became more clean n polished later on down the line)
hiphopkid2 2 years ago
your definitely right, ive read a couple of books on it lol, cause im a geek, Funkadelic and James Brown would be described as jungle funk (more organic), and bands like EWF would be described as sophisticated funk, bands like EWF and the Bar Kays really polished their sound, but taking out the ruff guitar funky sound, and only keeping the heavy bass, hence disco lol,
MUN7001 2 years ago
ur right but lets not forget as i mentioned in the post before that bands like EWF and the BAR KAYS had a deep organic sound as well listen to some Pre 74 EWF or some early 70s lates 60s Bar kays n ull see that they were taken what james brown was doing n putting there twist to it.

Clinton said so.
rockjohnson80 3 years ago
George Clinton did not hate EWF.

ewf was funking on their early days but they crossedover and made all those freaking ballads and disco tunes, sly was living up to his name, james was hounded by the government, kool and the gang was straight up disciples of the godfather but yes they too fell into placebo syndrome so did rufus.
michelle2837 3 years ago 2
I only recall "Boogie Wonderland" as there sole disco tune. Fill me in on the other disco tunes. They were not a disco group.

kinpupalic,
I'm not trying to stir up any animosity or anything but if you look up the "Lets Take It To The Stage" lyrics on the Internet, you will see that its "I sat back". But either way, the context is that they were coming for the other funk groups.
phoneke 3 years ago 2
It's ok phoneke, sometimes the translations were wrong. I'm from Plainfield, I know and I grew up on PFunk, went to school with the Kevin Goins, the younger Shiders, Quazar. Put on a good set of headphones, play it again and see if you can hear it. And then think to yourself why you would be hunting hogs in the woods? Peace.

"Sittin in the woods upon a log
My finger on a trigger my eyes on a hog
I sat back
Laughing at you"
I use to listen to this song all the time but didn't know what they were saying in the background. Now that I do, it makes so much sense. The groups that they were talking about were like fat hogs that they were about to gun down. Metaphorically of course.
In other words, they had their time in the light but it's time for Funkadelic. And if you dispute it Lets Take it To the Stage Sucka!!

Tudaman 3 years ago
NO DOUBT!
Odawg96 3 years ago
lol!!! He called James Brown the "Godmother"...He was high as the sky on this song.

lol!!! it's funny but we all know that as good as Clinton is, he can't touch Maurice White.
rockjohnson80 3 years ago
I don't think thats true at all.I think there is no dought that
Maurice innovated in a slicker & tighter way,but George's overall vision has been more enduring historicly. The concept's i believe were more clever and also subversive! They both where groups with a genius leader as well as genius players though.
sepiatrax 3 years ago
So why isnt P-funk in the rock and roll hall of fame?
rockjohnson80 3 years ago
They surely are my friend. They were inducted by Prince i believe in 1993! Let's take it to the stage!!
sepiatrax 3 years ago
Ok. I didn't know. Well both groups have made a contribution to music. I like Parliament but EWF just made more sense lyric wise.
rockjohnson80 3 years ago
I agree they both were innovative & powerfull,I just think that P-funk has had the more lasting impact.Having said that i saw EW& F when i was 12,(The All & ALL Tour)& it blew my head off. They were much more precise than P- Funk.
sepiatrax 3 years ago
Odawg96 3 years ago 2
The classic Parliament Albums as well(Mothership Connection-Motor booty Affair). They are loaded with clever, ironic & satirical lyrics,& the most innovative & progressive music around.Bernie Worrell & the great horn section are featured more on these albums.(As opposed to the guitar assault of Funkadelic).
sepiatrax 3 years ago
@rockjohnson80, EWF made too much sense. P-funk is timeless because they broke all the rules. GC, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy and crew developed a musical logic totally seperate from whatever else was going on, even though they used bits and pieces. Their records still sound fresh where other music from that era, including EWF, sounds dated.
In this case, same guitar riff throughout the song, long keyboard bass notes, outrageous lyrics, first diss song ever? Who else dared make a record like this?
modifiedcontent 3 years ago
You know I like EWF and P-Funk, but I hate to compare them. I have been in countless arguments about this over the past 10 years or so. Both groups had their own style which nobody else was doing. That made them who they were. EWF IS TIMELESS TOO. What planet are you from? Honestly all of it sounds dated from both groups, but it's all good music so it never gets old. It's real music. Earth, Wind & Fire made sense because Maurice White did his thing. Don't sleep on the fire.
rockjohnson80 3 years ago
p-funk is in the rock hall of fame, they were inducted in 1997
newsoul 3 years ago 2
obviously, u have been under the influence of a negative groove, cuz, if u was funkin' 4rl, u would know that George and Funk Mob have invaded the virgin walls of the hall and left P all over the place! if u listen closely, u can hearing the cummin'! Funk used 2 b a bad word, now everybody groovin'. just ask Ms. Muffet!
wcond1 2 years ago
Your responding to post from nearly a year ago....lol!!!
rockjohnson80 2 years ago
I would agree. I've always kind of looked at P-FUNK and EWF as being the opposite extremes on the funk continuum/spectrum. On the P-Funk side you had groups like Cameo, the Bar-Kays, SLY (the originator), Larry Graham, and Rick James. At EWF's end, you had groups like Rufus, the Commodores, and Bros. Johnson. Neither end is "better" than the other; it's up to the listener. Of course there were groups that could go EITHER way: SLAVE, Ohio Players, Gap Band. It's all-good, though.
Odawg96 3 years ago 2
True brother. You just covered the entire 70's funk world right there. I never knew funk diss records existed until now.
