This doesn't work on my Sprint version of the Evo. Appears to be Sprint specific.

@rozcoe20 Still didn't work. Mine is most likely a newer rev phone the solution I found was to restart the phone via the software and then on power-up have the volume down button depressed. No other combination of methods found in the manual, HTC site, Sprint site, or out on the net worked.

If this doesn't work, try pulling the battery for about 60 seconds, re insert it, then hold down the volume down button and press the power button...etc.

Hold down both buttons down at the same time. I tried holding down the volume button and then the power button, and my phone would just turn on normally. you have to hold buttons at the same time!!
