Nice pipe man. I just got done dealing with tongue bite. It ended up being 2 things, I smoked too fast and the type of tobaccos I was smoking. I finally found a tobacco I can smoke daily, the whole bowl, without bite. Cheers,
Good video and topic. After over 30 years smoking a pipe one thing that has worked for me is to understand the tobacco. Each blend has its own character. It's kind of like getting to know a person. Blends smoke differently in certain pipes. I would suggest that you learn your blends character then learn how to pack that particular blend. Experience will tell the story. Some blends take a tighter pack in certain pipes than others. Some, a somewhat looser pack. Packing is worth exploring.
Great video and a very hot topic indeed! I'm fairly new to pipe smoking and don't really have anything new to add except I've had to deal with the dreaded tongue bite as well. And I was like you, I couldn't make myself take a couple days off to let it heal. The only thing I've figured out is to puff very slowly and that certain tobaccos have less bite than others.
You can get tongue bite because of your Virginia tobacco in your blend, which usually contains a large amount of sugar. it burns, and as a result of your tongue is like a steak. let's smoking slower!
How you been bro good question I'm going through a little bite myself. I'll have to check out the book yarekI'm5932 mentioned in your comments thanks for the hit in your vid yeah been bald for about 10 years now I blame it on my girl Lol before she came along I had a fro it's easy just a razor and I'm good to go Lol
Hi, a friend of mine recommended Sesame seed oil. You can find it in any grocery store in the Asian/Chinese section. Put a little bit on the spoon, rub it all over your tongue...has a nutty flavor. Works instantly for me.
Enjoyed the video and look forward to hearing the feedback offered by everyone on this topic. Fortunately, I've not experienced this yet and wonder if I'm immune to it (doubt it) or have just been lucky during my short tenure with regular smokes the last few months. I guess I'll know it when I experience it the first time. Best, Gary
Does it happen with every type of tobacco? I thinking that it has something to do with the level of moisture, and maybe your packing method. It doesn't look like you're puffing your pipe to fast or hard ... In my experience a tobacco (of any type) can behave in many, many different ways depending on how moist it is. Might be worth doing some experiments with this?
Richard C. Hacker in The Ultimate Pipe Book , he says there are 3 reasons for tongue bite . 1 pipe not properly broke in , 2 improperly packed pipe , 3 smoking tobacco that is not properly humidified ... page 122 chapter 4 the secrets of successful pipe smoking . hope this helps , God bless . michael

My tip is this, have a glass of ice cold water around when you smoke a pipe, and sip on it now and then.
Tongue bit will go away after months/years.
Enjoy the sunshine!
