@JRCrowley Yep, i have that feeling too. Theres just something about PRS'es that never has made a PRS a "keeper" in my collection. I've had some and sold them again... I'm open though, and i hope with time i will find "that" PRS guitar. I like the sound and looks of em!
@Hallslys that's because you don't want to tangle up your cash in a guitar that is that expensive. To some it is not worth it if you are just playing in your bedroom.
They're clearly beautiful guitars but I've never picked one up and had that "WOW" feeling that I get from some other guitars. Yesterday I picked up a CS ES and had that feeling immediately. One open strum and I was hooked. Never had that from a PRS. I have picked up a lot of them, and found many of them to be almost blah. Do I need to keep looking?
Great interview. Mr. Smith gives thoughtful, if not insightful, answers. In some of his more recent interviews he seems to be looking back over his career and wondering if his legacy will equal that of Gibson, Fender, Marshall, etc. Being fortunate enough to own PRS, Gibson, Fender & Marshall gear...my opinoin is yes. The gear coming out of PRS is truly some of the best you will find at any price.
i have a usa prs and i will have it till i die he is the shit on making guitars he knows what sounds good in the wood. paul reed smith and les paul funny how there names have paul in it they made the best guitars in the world.
WHAT! Paul Reed Smith has never heard of The Tone King!?!? I just bought a SE Tim Mahoney model today. The new SE Custom 24 has a carved top now! PRS is the best!
@ChristianBurrell He's so kind most of us cant afford his guitars! If he were so kind, he'd make his guitars more affordable! & I'm NOT taling about his SE line!(Which ARE great instruments!)
@DMSProduktions i can agree, but you must pay for good quality. If you had the choice of paying for good quality petrol for an extra couple of pence you would wouldn't you? No one likes cheap petrol. It fucking stinks ;)
I love watching what PRS does from a business strategy standpoint... they craft high quality instruments and have a great Private Stock business and then move down to the more affordable SE models... they are making all the right moves.
@xboxnissan with all due respect, not every prs is 4k..... Got my 25th anniversary sc245 for under 3k brand new. Second, they are NOT just a "blues" guitar. I do admit that most of them appeal to the genre, but that is based on the demographic of people who buy them. The only minority set up is by the price tag, but school of music is irrelevant. Hell raiser is a great axe, very purpose driven, but some of us enjoy the sound definition and subtleties of prs.
@KINGTHEBEAST I don't, drop prices and you'll drop quality. Theres a reason why their guitars are expensive, due to the way it's handcrafted, materials, where it's made, etc. I don't want PRS to risk those. The essence of PRS which makes it what it is!
there are 3 american mainstream guitar builders who still do it right: PRS, Rickenbacker, and G&L. There are tons of small builders also doing excellent work. Great interview, and thank you for talking to a great builder!
@theruley he says lot of stuff, but his guitars cost 4x a "typical" guitars. I bought a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 with Emgs for 1000$ and it does what I want: metal. PRS is intended for blues and rock. Sure Emil Werstler and COF's guitarist has PRS, but it's a minority.
@ThieleM Not sure about that, sorry. I don't have in mind any Known shredder or any metal guitarist except Daath's/Chimaira's guitarist Emil Wrestler and Cradle Of Filth's guitarist. Else that, Michael Angelo Batio uses Dean (World #1 shredder of all time as for many website), Trivium: Gibson + Jacksons, Children of Bodom: ESP, Lamb Of God: Jackson. There's many more, but when I think about a metal guitar, I don't think PRS first, but rather Jackson, Ibanez, Schecter, BC Rich, and others.
Don't take this the wrong way but what you have in mind doesn't really matter.
The tall guy form slipknot was a PRS endorser, the bald guy from the other Slipknot related band is a PRS guy. There are lots of metal players in the PRS endorsee list..it is on their website
For shredders you have guys like Al Di Meola and a long list of guys who are shredders...they just don't dress up like ghouls or 80's posers.
@ThieleM "dress up like ghouls or 80's posers." you don't need to hate people. I provided you examples. Please feel free to get to college and learn about having an oppinion, and how to share what you have in mind. You may think about MAB having a wig, and I don't care. The point of a guitarist isn't looking if he's sexy, we look at his playing style. If you are attracted to beautiful guys rather than good guitarist, that's good for you. Maybe you are jealous of MAB ? Who knows.
@ThieleM I'm not saying they doesn't make great metal guitars. It's just that I don't think PRS first in mind when looking for a Metal Guitar. That's it dude. I don't say they're bad. I say they are too expensive and I think it's just Apple of Guitars. Once again, I don't say it's bad.
@xboxnissan The newer PRS SE Paul Allender signature model with the EMG 81tw/89n combo is about as metal as it gets. Right down to the gorgeous bat inlays, Mahogany body/Maple top & neck/Ebony board. What is a "metal guitar" anyway? One with actives? Or do it also have to have a Floyd?
@SixStringHarmonies It was about my personnal oppinion. I don't say (4th time in this video) that PRS can't/don't/etc make metal guitars. Just that MOST metal guitarist uses jackson, ESP, Schecter and Dean. To prove that it's few, Machine Head's Flynn uses Epiphone guitar, Paul Allender & Emil Wrestler uses PRS for metal playing. Again, I don't say PRS can't make metal guitars. Metal guitars appears to me like a brand. I get in a store, and I'd rather try first the new Corey's Jackson than PRS..
@ThieleM Batio isn't the greatest shredder of all time, that's a manner of oppinion: you may think Eric Clapton is your favorite shredder and I can't say anything, because it's called an oppinion. Fredrik Âkesson sure uses PRS, it's not because I don't mention all 10-15 guitarist that I forget them. I'm speaking about majority of guitarist that does Metal. I don't say nobody uses PRS. I say PRS isn't the first brand I have in mind for a Metal playing, that's all.
