  • This method worked perfectly for my 1995 Neon SOHC 2.0L. I wondered if it would work in my head before looking for anyone that had thought about doing it in this manner.... well you did and since I saw how it worked for you, I tried it! Perfect!! Thanks for posting! Oh, and the person that snapped their wrench, don't worry, I tried it with a normal 3/8 and snapped mine too - the first time. I put on a 1/2 breaker bar and impact driver socket and no problem!

  • I think I'm gonna have to try this trick and it makes me CRINGE!!! No way in hell am I gonna do this with my Snap-On gear and i'm wondering if I'd be better off using an impact socket for the job? If so, Harbor Freight, here I come!

  • I just used your way to get the pulley off and it worked your the man bro good job!!!!!!

  • It worked great on my mitsubishi delica 4d56 engine. Thanks heaps

  • It amazes me how many people I see on Youtube using a torque wrench, a PRECISION tool.....as a BREAKER BAR!!! SMHD. >:(

Never the less thx 4 the vid.

  • @heartlessangel7 OMG you aint lying, no way in hell I'mma use my Snap on to do something like this. I have even seen people use a cheaper pipe on a torque wrench....Thumbs up to you sir

  • @heartlessangel7 Cheater! sorry

  • It amazes me how many people I see on Youtube using a torque wrench, a PRECISION tool.....as a BREAKER BAR!!! SMHD. >:(

  • Does work on a 3000 GT in one try.... With a good starter.

  • This trick does NOT work on an engine that runs counterclockwise.

  • @TehHondaKid Yep. Try it on a Honda and then total up the money and time it's just cost you...

  • @TehHondaKid It works for tightening it!

  • @TehHondaKid It should, just wedge the wrench or breaker bar on the opposite side, correct?

  • @TehHondaKid Then you put the wrench to opposite way duhhhhhhhhh!!!

  • you beautiful beautiful person, just did this trick and it worked.

98 toyota camry. I spent like 2 hours with penetrating oil and 1/2 impact. Also did chain wrench and breaker bar...

  • @Food2001 Hey bud another way of doing it is by heating up the washer (not the bolt) till it starts just about turning red with a torch. Will work 99 percent of the time.

  • DO NOT do this ever. Spinning the engine over with no timing belt will bend some valves since the camshaft is not turning.

Never use an impact wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt. Always use the factory holding tool or flywheel holding tool and a breaker bar with socket. An impact wrench could easily break the crankshaft with the heat generated and stress.

  • @billybob042665 Are you saying that impact gets hotter then the running engine and could break the crank even though it makes less torque then the running engine? Why would the camshaft not be turning? The timing belt/chain is still on the engine, this is the serpentine belt drive. Got anything else stupid to say?

  • Crazy method and but I like it.. if everything fails then this is the brute way... Of course the brute way is not the safest but when you are short on time or money, you have to rely on your wits and basic instinct... I have too try this next time...

  • @spelunkerd -- I own 15 Gallon compressor 200 $ with Impact gun and some other air tools from WM ,

Impact Gun will not work for wheel nuts but for pulley nut is ok ,

I adjusted my pressure to 160 PSI and 20 $ 1/2 " impact gun will do the job ,

    Chinese Compressor works just fine.

  • just spend the 40 bucks and buy the crank pull tool dont be a tool

    !

  • @tigerklink you don't even need to buy them, you can rent them from a parts store.

  • @tigerklink either that or make using 2 simple balancer bolts and a wrench. Flywheel and starter damage are not fun nor cheap repairs. Neither is a stripped balancer bolt.

  • fool thats so bad for the motor

  • A lot of people are saying "get an impact gun for $20", or rattle gun as I like to call them, I tried that with my own, it didn't work, the only thing that undid mine was my (mechanic) brother's $500 Sidchrome Rattle gun (1/2 inch), strong as anything, this idea however I don't think I'd try just to be on the safeside.

  • nice...just takes careful setup of the socket....simple

once off and cleaned up, the shaft greased w/ a little moly grease and the bolt threads cleaned and greased, a simple impact wrench, and torque wrench probably finish the re install !?... yes?

  • this works fellas! no BS here at all I hit my starter twice and walah off comes the bolt. yeaaaaahhhhh baaaaaaabbyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!! what impact gun!!! I got impact starter bitches!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @7511fsm Or you can just put the wrench the other way..

Either way, its bad on everything. Just rent a 650 ft lb impact..

  • @Totenhosen17 Oh yeah duh. I didn't even think about switching the lever on the wrench. Good call. I think I'm going to remove my dumbass post below because it's definitely not accurate.

Like you said either way, I'd never do this. I used a 5 foot breaker bar with 1/2" extensions and a jack stand for leverage and was able to break it free.

  • THE STARTER IS NOW BAD >(

  • AFTER 2 FUCKING HOURS IM GONNA GO TRY THIS NOW!

  • Get a cheap AIR compressor 15-20 gallons 100-200 $ and some Impact Gun 20 $ which will make this replacment a snap.

  • @aviomaster Average quality air tools (small tank, small compressor, cheap gun) don't usually have the torque to accomplish this task. You might get lucky, but should prepare for failure without investing a lot more.

  • To all those thinking about trying this, it will work, but be VERY CAREFUL and observe the direction of rotation and set up accordingly. Some engines do indeed rotate in the reverse direction.

  • it worked on my 1994 Toyota corolla i took 3 tries

  • OMG you saved my life!!!! This really worked for me and I have a Hyundai Tiburon 03 and there is no way to hold the crank pully with anything so this totally saved me! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! DIE ALL YOU HATERS!!!!

  • The man is showing ONE easy way to do it been alone n not too many tools..+1 excellent trick

Which way it turn when cranked n how to position the tool is YOUR resposability...butholes/complainers.. if someone up load a video pulling a tooth with pliers... will you do it?

  • Bad idea doing it this way.... your just askin for trouble.

  • if you have a honda do not use this method cranking the engine will tighten the bolt. honda engines rotate ccw with right handed thread

if your lucky you will snap the head of the bolt off and you might be able to screw the broken part out . do you want to take that chance

they sell a tool on line for honda crank removal that are about 22 bucks buy it your saving about 500 bucks labor on a timing belt.

  • USE THE JACK !

  • thanks for this, helped me a lot.

  • i just dun my car i have a holden 253 and set it up on a block of wood and hard up on rail on the car i been at it all day long and soon as i seen this i went out side and in about 2minets i had it off.shood work with morst cars aslong as the motor turns the right way to undo the the bolt tho

  • HMMM NOT DO NOT DO THIS,,this ptting un-do wear on your crank

  • does tht work on fords cars too?

  • It does not matter if it is regular thred or reversed, the threading is always going to loosen against the way the engine cranks clockwise or counter-clockwise.

  • dont do this all its going to do is break the rachet or socket..heat up the bolt and use a pipe so you can put more power into the rachet n it would come off...

  • nice lol

  • i hope it was his car

  • "Auto Repair - Honda Crank Pulley Tool Use" Look this up by DenLorsTools they have a video here which shows a much safer way to remove this and you can rent the tools needed from AutoZone for free to accomplish it.

  • This only works on HONDAS.. I have Honda hex tool, but for all other cars i work on you cannot use it. The right way is to use a strong impact gun with sufficient air supply

  • WATCH OUT -- make sure your engine spins the right way. If the crank bolt is on the American driver's side, your engine likely spins the wrong way for this trick. Older-model Hondas (like mine) spin counter-clockwise.

  • that looks like an awful method

  • i tried your method today and it broke the socket.... one ? does the distrubitor cap have to be connected for the crankshapft to turn or should i keep it disconnected

  • What brand socket were you using pahb03, a craftsman 12mm double hex split open on me when removing the head bolts. This method should not be unusually stressful on a socket just the bolts can be very stubborn.

The crankshaft pulley does not have timing related belts directly on it. Anyways, it does not matter if the distributor cap is on just as long as there is nothing blocking the distributor's rotor from spinning.

  • @Ignatius532 carftman can't handle this job, I always use snapon they always do well.

  • What kind of car is that? I noticed it is a reverse thread

  • It's not reverse theaded.

  • @Ignatius532 Hahaha Suburbanator91 made me lol, Lefty loosey, righty tighty is the old saying for amateur mechanics.

  • @suburbanator91 Looks like it is reversed, you have the breaker bar set to be tightning the bolt (clockwise)

  • @suburbanator91 96 Ford Probe GT

  • i did this once acidently, the wrench flew up and wacked the side of the car.

  • thats a good trick,i will try it thanks
