Thanks for posting parts 1-4 awesome! Nobody will ever top The Ventures. They will always be the # 1 instrumental guitar band of all time. Got to see them in May'08 and June '09 and hope to see them again!
They have always been California's top surfing band to me . Mel Taylor was a fantastic drummer. Nokie Edwards was a good composer also. Their version of Telstar was better than the original. Saw them live in New York city.
I can't believe how amazing Mel sounds with 1 microphone attached to the drum kit. Thses guys were awesome and anyone who wants to get involved in music should listen to these guys first and take note. BTW it's so cool how they all turn around at the same time and look at Mel during his solos. Vintage.
I have the (The Ventures On Stage) album that was my dads, this is the first time watching them live. What a great band with a great sound, Mel Taylor is awesome, and is the one of the reasons for my love of drums. RIP Mel.
Amazing! I think I can also hear some phrasing, in the last lead guitar part of 'House Of The Rising Sun', which reminds me of the Lynrd Skyrnd 'Freebird' solo. So many years earlier, so many less guitar effects, but what stunning guitar playing. What about the drummer? So much sound and different tones out of that simple kit, great playing. This band was as tight as a bank going bust. I'm a massive Beatles fan but ''The Ventures' were breaking that new ground for others to follow.
I think Mel had the fastest hands in the world to be able to play like that.He and Bob willl sadly missed. Glad they brought a little joy into this old mans life.
These guys should have been in the FIRST group of inductees in the R&R hall of fame. They were the inspiration for me and so many other life time and professional musicians.
Don't miss the last song with BOB BOGLE on lead. NO ONE could play a vibrato arm like he did. Check out 6:38 - So emotional. RIP Bob... thank you for your genius.
Mel Taylor - may your name be sung on the lips of your children's children's children* thank you for changing music forever. That goes for all the Ventures. There would not be a BEATLES or guitar rock without this gang who made guitar accessible to the common man. They made the impossible look easy (it wasn't of course) but my cousins all picked up guitars &"how to play" LPs because of the FABULOUS VENTURES. They spent the rest of their lives trying to get this relaxed feel. Never did. Who Has?
is it just me or is this one (pipeline?) of the songs of the way old '80's California Games? Great game at the time, greatest music possible on speaker only ;)
All 4 parts have blown my mind. 1966, what a year, Blonde on Blonde, Face to Face by the Kinks, Pet Sounds, Revolver, Aftermath, Velvet Undergound working on their first, Volt/Stax, Motown. I know these songs pre-date '66 but what a perfomance! With their proper haircuts and suits, they look like the last holdouts before the late 60's mass freakout.
@rutgers1961 Their freakout stuff is pretty good too. Their cover of Strawberry Fields, and several originals with sitar. Hell, they made an album called "Guitar Freakout!"
Love the Ventures. Telstart always makes me choke up a little. My parents (God rest their souls) were big fans and I grew up on this music. I still have the original LPs.
the drum speed on the break parts just blows my mind more and more evrytime i see it. the ventures sure are quality timeless music. so tight and crisp!
Pretty awesome guitar rock! Scott Ian of Anthrax said it best when most of, I guess you would call it yesteryears, that the Ventures style was directly influential to thrash metal.Check out their version of "pipeline".It's all there folks!
when did mel taylor die? they are phenomenal.cigarmark is right. words are just not there for this performance....just perfect..i wish i had seen them live...
I saw them several times during Mels' day and it was pure ecstacy. 4 HOF performers. Words don't do them justice. Then again, they spoke thru their music. :-) Krupa,Rich & Mel are the greatest ever on drums. You nailed that.
Wow! I never knew it was Bob who played lead guitar on Telstar. I always thought it was Nokie. Crazy man! What a great band. So sad the way Mel died. He was one of my all time favorite drummers.
you're right. My bad, I hit the wrong number & didn't look before I posted. My apologies. I normally don't screw up like that. None the less, Mel will be missed always.
Nokie is just incredible and so is Bob Bogle on the Bass and when he plays lead. He's hardly talked about but his Bass playing is wonderful and he and Don started The Ventures. Don Wilson? It doesn't get any better than that on rhythm. What can I say about the late, great Mel Taylor on drums? He's absolutely incredible. Wonderful! A master of the drums and I miss him! They were lately inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame! Thanks The Ventures for all the great music!
