For the rail climbups, since you're trying to build upper body strength, keep your feet together and keep them in constant contact with the wall. When you stagger your feet and kick them out, it provides a slight kip.

thanks! for me cold is anything below 30 :P but that day it was i think 8 or 4 degrees with a chilly wind
