Who thought this was a good idea?. I know the Flintstones where also aimed at adults, but to have a cigarette company be the sponsor of a show that attracted a young audience makes not sense. I don't think six year olds could buy cigarettes, real ones, even in those day.
It wasn't considered by most to be a bad thing back then guys. As we, as a society, learn dangers of our habits we (sometimes) tend to push them away. I'm sure 50 years from now some kid is gonna look at a "retro" McDonald's commercial and be like "OMG they actually ate that calorie infested, saturated fat filled, heart attack-inducing PROCESSED FOOD?!" "The poor children!" Times they change...
@sissybearsheba they had Popeye cigarettes when I was a kid (i'm 33). Just a white candy stick with a red end. They were pretty gross. They also had the gum kind with a one shot puff of flour or powdered sugar that you could blow out the other end to simulate smoke. Fun times.
Yeah... I'm sure cigarettes smoking was popular at the time and the 'cool' thing to do, but if this aired today I don't think I'd want my hypothetical kids watching this. It would give them ideas, and as a children's cartoon, the Flintstones are role models somewhat. But I don't see the point of this commercial. What was the target audience for this? Ages 2-14?
Free speech is great. Unfortunately people who should know better than promote cigarettes to children didn't give a crap so they had to be regulated. I think you give up your rights when you abuse them or use them as a means to an end that you know is wrong. Especially one as obvious as this.
Winston smells BAD like all cigarettes do. PHEW!!! I'm sure glad they banned cigarette commercials, but I wonder why today's youth are smoking, even without that.
must.....smoke......now

Winston also sponsored The Beverly Hillbillies. Some people seemed more concerned about the bad grammar in the slogan.
