I question the validity of that theory that the Er hu may be the forefather of the violin. I feel that this may be a ethnocentric comment. Being Miao-hmong myself, and having people ( my own ethnicity) say the bamboo flute, i.e sheng, its a traditional Miao instrument is flawed.
It's called "Barbarian" because the instrument originated from Central Asia and Mongolia. In ancient times, the Chinese considered people beyond their borders to be "barbarians" just like how the Romans viewed the Vandals, Goths, Visigoths, etc. In fact the Erhu is the direct ancestor of the violin. After China, the instrument made it's way to India, and the Middle East all in different versions. Because of the this, Europe picked it up post Renaissance era and made the Violin, Cello, etc.
