#47 pop in 1966.when i heard one of their songs on the radio back in the late 1980s on one of those oldies show i was surprised to hear that country singer don williams was a member of this group.he did great with them and on his own.overlooked classic tune.
There comes a TIME' in everyone's life when we say, 'Time, where did it go?' - We know we can't go back and we miss those 'good old days' - no matter how bad they were. TIME gives us a selective memory. :0)
I was in the US Navy, headed for VietNam on an aircraft carrier, in 1966, and this Pozo Seco song almost knocked me off the flight deck, with it's......... can't talk right now.
I remember this song in my freshman at college. My older brother had the album and I was blown away. I have never forgotten this group0 and am now re-discovering it.
Nowikidy, (3rd try) Sorryto hear about your setbacks, but to hear that you are on the mend. I,too am 64 and that time has slipped by so quickly. The music of the 60's still soothes me. Hope you keep well and fit. Kind regards.
Heard this today for the first time in over 30 years, remember singing it as a child with my best friend, with whom I lost touch. Makes me sad, and happy.
There was a place I went drinking and dancing where the band played this as the last song of the night. There was a wonderful young woman, she and I were in love. But our love could never be fulfilled. We always danced to this song together holding each other as close and tight as we could and sang it softly to each other. I haven't seen or talked to her in 34 years, but when I hear this song I am still warmed by the memories of our love. (Yes Franie, I still love you from so long ago)
I stumbled on this, haven't heard it in a long time. One of the local radio staions plays this type of music all of the time. That's where I heard it last. Thanks for posting.
@artimesj ----Don is more than a minor legend. He's now in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Susan Taylor has continued to write & sing, in the folk music genre. She now performs as Taylor Pie. You can watch & listen to her on youtube. Worth a visit. She's now old & gray, but STILL has it. I grew up in Corpus Christi Texas, where they got their start. Saw them many times at Del Mar College. Fantastic group, & still great after parting ways.
I was only 17 when this song was popular. I was just out of high school and had fled my small midwest town to go to San Francisco to wear flowers in my hair. It touched my heart then and it still does 55 years later when tonight I found it on YouTube. Where has all that time gone between 17 and 62?
Thanks for posting this! The writer of this song, Michael Merchant, recently put up a YT channel. He has written dozens and dozens of songs just as beautiful as this. Like the Deer was just uploaded. watch?v=1en0BpSS3ew
1st grade, played over/over again on Demand Radio 79—KTHT (AM), Houston--later learned the 2nd most listened to station for Houston/south Texas at the time. Knowing theyre from Corpus, that constant airplay from up-the-road Space City obviously helped propel Pozo Seco from Texas to Top 40 national charting.
@steve7138 thanks for providing that info. growing up in Corpus, i couldnt believe when i moved to houston that they were from Corpus. always liked their tune, the lyrics meant something but took me long time to understand them. thought that the standup bass looked so cool. Thanks & the post too!
Time can be a friend and at the same time an enemy. When you were a 17 year old kid in Texas in 1966 and the draft board was beathing down your neck it was your enemy because time, it seemed, was rushing by. I weep as I hear this song. This was my anthem of the times.
@saggiest My sentiments exactly. I was a 19 yr old kid in Kansas, my Dad had recently died, I was facing the draft and time just didn't seem to be on my side. I'm now 64, have fought two catastrophic illnesses and have cancer but somehow, I feel that time is now on my side. Funny how we learn as we age.
I was in the Navy_after joining to avoid the draft_when this came over the airwaves. And while I can remember not particularly wanting to be there at the time, I'd give anything to go back to those days and rejoin the shipmates I will remember till the end of my days. Time . . . where DID you go?
This song brings back memories of my childhood, when the family went up to the San Bernardino Mountains. Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake are still there but seem so much smaller than they were in those days. Time, where did you go?
So listenable. So beautiful. Lyrics with meaning, wow, what a concept . . . Check out Pozo's "Excuse Me Dear Martha" another "B" side that is just incredible.
The lead vocal is done by Taylor Pie (aka Susan Taylor) Taylor Pie is still writing, singing and performing. Search Taylor Pie here on YouTube and you'll see some really great performances in the studio and on stage, including TIME with the Cumberland Trio. You can hear more of her music on CDBaby. A truly great folk talent that made the Pozo's so successful and loved.
What a great sound! I still have the original album on vinyl, I must have played it a 1000 times. Also have the compilation CD from both of their albums. Pres. Johnson loved this group, they were invited to perform at the White House for him. Also did a great cover of The Beatles, 'Strawberry Fields'.
The Pozo Seco Singers performed a special concert for the incoming freshmen at UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall of 1967. I'll never forget this performance or THIS SONG. Probably one of the most UNDERPLAYED great recording of its era. They also recorded what I consider the best version of the Beatles' "If I Fell" which also belongs on YouTube.

Pozo Seco means 'dry hole" in Spanish. Them being from Corpus Christi, Texas, they probably got the name from the many dry holes drilled around C.C.
