I am suprised that king Henry 8th did not get Mary married off when she was young. What a nasty father. He should've concentrated on being a good father rather than trying for a son. My sympathies lie with the innocent Lady Jane Grey, She never wanted to be queen and yet she was executed for it. @philessexuk I know the pope at the time wrote to Queen Mary to ask her to stop the burning s. King Phillip of Spain distanced himself from the whole thing. It also says in the bible to forgive, to turn the other cheek. *I do not know of the passage in the bible that says burning is to be used to purify the soul but i will look into it and educate myself.* There is a difference to "purifying the soul" to burning people for not having the same beliefs as you.

Edward wanted to stick to his fathers will and pass the throne to Elizabeth, he never liked Mary. Edward did try to pass over Mary due to her Catholicism and her illegitimacy, but it was pointed out that Elizabeth was also "illegitimate" in many peoples eyes many Catholics. If you compare society, beliefs and norms 50 years ago with now, it's easy to see how far we've changed. Now imagine how we've changed in 500 years: probably to the extent that we wouldn't be able to understand the norms of that time. Actions that may appear evil to our eyes now may not have been evil (but maybe a bit reprehensible) in their historical context. Ridding society of heretics was considered horrible but necessary and should be accepted as such. Mary was overszealous but not evil.

@hoothering Fanatics always seem to think that they can read a fine print in the commandments; that there are exceptions to thou shalt not kill... Such as: God told me to or he was worshipping the wrong god or they were a growing threat. But I agree with you that only god can decide who lives and who dies.

I know it's common for people to see documentaries like this and attack religion, but the truth is, there have been leaders just as cruel as this one with no religion at all who have killed religious individuals/groups for their faith and assembling in secret. People blame religion when the real problem is that people in power have often killed others simply for not thinking/believing as they do.

I agree about the stupidity of claiming Seymour as the 4th wife, but this could be a script error (the narrator said it) But Mary did have phantom pregnancies, and it has been stated by Starkey definitely.
