What you learn and practice in the studio is what you'll do on the street. If you're sloppy with your blocks and counters in practice, that's what you'll do in a real situation. And that'll get you hurt. And power doesn't come from big windmills, power comes from from your core and your body rotation. Big windmills leave you wide open and take more time. Economy of motion is key.
if they went full speed and full power they would injure their partner, you want to go at a slower pace to get the feel of the motion, then you can go faster the more you practice..slow is smooth , smooth is fast..
All in all I kinda like this stuff, though I have some "questions". The sideways movement and turning of the body looks very good, but why the slomo?! When you approach realistic speed against aggressive and skilled attackers, that's when you "test your metal"! When doing it only slow with compliant partner, it's very easy to adapt bad habits which might get you killed..
in a real fight you don't block so no need to argue over whether big windmills or little windmills are better for blocking, big windmills give your strikes more power than little windmills and that is all that matters
And lest anyone thinks "it doesn't work" I can tell you from personal experience that on those few occasions when your opponents control slips during a workout? It hurts like a sonofabitch.
Big windmills will leave your guard down, may only result in getting your clock cleaned and aren't necessary- power comes from torso rotation. I think the difference comes from whether one learned under Jimmy Woo or Frank Wolsley. Master Bill Hulsey from Bellflower uses wide blocks and wind-ups, whereas other schools keep tighter. But, like any martial art, if you're well practiced you'll still fare well. I could criticize Master Hulsey for his wide looping blocks, but he'd still kick my ass.
Fighting has evolved, if your in a bar fight with the other swinging haymakers at you the big windmills have a good chance of working. Where as if you fought a trained fighter who will not swing wildly at you the shorter fast blocks will work
I being a student of Bill Lasiter and a former student of a teacher that I will not name from Downey ca. I can say that I know the fast short movements of Bill Lasiter and the Long strong BIG windmills blocks of my other teacher in Downey.
Deathhead guys may lack tact(calling people nigger is not nice) but they are right on with what works in A-social violent acts. Remember Jimmy said "new" San Soo was no good for fighting. Sorry
@40chrisk Not so much tack but lack of brains. . . . I think Jimmy endorsed "whatever works for you" meaning, if he falls and you stand, it's all good!
@jeffsor47 Jeff, I think it's fair to say that fighting has evolved, no different than athletes of today being far superior than those of a century ago. That said, I think it would be safe to say that our art has also reaped the benefits of time and consequently improved as well. As for the two fighters I think Dave was right that the big windmills of yesterday leave room for an easy shot to a vulnerable area. Also, if the old fighter goes to the ground, a new fighter could have the advantage.
@40chrisk Jimmy said "new" is just shortened "old" some 1st generation masters said. More efficient and lends itself to more effective transitioning to other moves than long arm strikes. Sorry
@jeffsor47 without bodyweight transfer, which U get with Old kung-fu you will only make the enemy anger and more resolved to killing U. This new stuff lacks follow-through and gets WAY to fancy and requires too much fine motor skill to make work when U have just pooped your pants out of fear of being killed. Large windmill strikes are about the only thing U can do in a Fight/flight situation, besides running.
@40chrisk Not exactly true. As taught by my 1st gen. master , if body weight is dropped at same time strike or block is made using a solid horse the results are good. Don't confuse "show" san soo to hard core san soo, there's a world of difference.
@jeffsor47 My standard would be what would I want to know if I had to spend 72 hours in the worst prison in america(wrongly convicted, of course). Knowing Bubba is coming w/his sharpened toothbrush, I wouldn't give a hoot about ToyLeHo, I just need to be able to knock this clown's block off and fast. Injure, repeate till satisfied. Anything else is a dance.
Without a "real match" arguing which technique ( old vs. new) is superior is really stupid. If you want to judge based on a "video or "production" why not compare Batman to Spiderman, it makes about as much sense. Besides, it's usually the fighter not the style that wins the day.
Why hide behind the mask? Oh I forgot your a racist nazi who hides behind a mask an spews venom. If your trying to play the bad guy you won, every art has there dick heads. Where's Frank now ... probably a 300 lb couch potato. After he ripped every body off he skipped town an has not been heard of since. Good job Frank. Most of what you say has no merit because no one knows who you are, or cares. All I can say is Bill is still active. While Frank is nothing but a very SMALL memory.
Bill lasiter does not teach BIG windmill blocks and strikes, believe me. Try using a big windmill block on a boxer he will knock your head off. Let's try to keep the personal attacks to yourself.
deathsheadkungfu. The only mistake was your post. I posted this for the people that train at Dave Hopkins Kung Fu San Soo to enjoy. I did not post this video for the keyboard kung fu masters that know absolutely nada to post their hateful remarks.
Why the hate? Visit the school & show Dave what he's doing wrong. This is why this art will never come together. Somebody always wants to piss and moan.
Learn how to strike with windmill power to vital targets....This Bullshit will only get your ass kicked by Old San Soo and or real street fighters... The lame clapping and belief that this works against a very motivated and skilled fighter is a mistake..
@jeffsor47 They're like you, they don't fight in the street.they spend their time teaching and impressing children. They don't fight!Raul is to busy selling Jebus and having sleepovers with "Chuick" and slapping women around and getting "forgiven" for same.Own your sins, coward.Maybe Jebus's blood put a scab on it but it's still there.San Soo Comunity is for the most part a bunch of Jimmy gas bags.A real joke, like you.
Great variety of techniques and variation. Notice these guys don't repeat the same moves over and over like other videos we've all seen. At least this video is not sped up or edited with 5 different sound effects. I would love to workout with these guys knowing that they are in control, unlike others who are uncontrollable and flail their arms around.
I like to watch Dave. He's tight and focused. Precise and clean.

As for Deathhead you got some good stuff but your attitude and lack of respect make you nothing more but a JOKE.
