  • Jizz. In. My pants.

  • FAVOURITE PIECE EVER

  • This made cry some time ago, when I heard a live Orquestra for first time.

  • As I watched some of the people their gestures seemed unnatural in the way as the video was sped up to match the sound... HMMMM.... Like the guy at 3:22 wiping his nose, and when the camera pans in and out. It totally unnatural.

  • @bandgeek940

You do realize that's just the camera moving and he's finishing itching his nose right?

Your claims are completely unfounded and there is absolutely no reason to think that it was speeded up.

  • WOW.

  • Oh yes, Dmitri was a nervous man :).

  • I imagine the audiences view of the conductor is a tad more flattering than our view XD

  • E N E R G I A P U R A

  • we're playig this????

  • Phenomenal.

  • amazing and unknown music!

  • @infrared1972 it's very well known!

  • This is probably the most intense piece of symphonic literature i've ever seen!

  • BOUYAKA BOUYAKA FLY HIGH MEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i get too excited hearing this... XD!

  • That allegro makes me fell jerky

  • sounds like not shostakovich music. sounds like holywood movie ost.

  • The most chilling music Shostakovich ever wrote and no wonder as it is a portrait of Stalin. Dudamel captures the mood of the music perfectly. No wonder he got chosen to become the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra's new Music Director.

  • padredemishijos12 thanks for the hint. I agree with you. And Prokofiev. reev9759 it's not disappontment it's focus believe me.

  • anyone see how he seems dissapointed at the violin section at 3:18?

  • @Dragonmen456 Its not disapointment. He is just trying to set the mood for that part of the piece. If it says p or mp he is not going to be jumping around as if it was ment to be played as ffff! Same goes for you @reev9759

Some people obvously don't understand the basics of what they are listening to!

  • @ManIhTwoLinJay Check out that spot again, and maybe go a few seconds before. It changes to pianisimo, the violins aren't together, he looks to his left, looks back center and smirks ever so slightly.

  • Is that a disappointed Dudamel at 3:16-3:18?

  • @reev9759 I doubt it. I think it's just him trying to be mysterious with his facial expressions since that section calls for that sort of emotion.

  • Zhdanov and his comrades denounced this 33 times

  • At 2:46 Dudamel looks like an evil horseman.

  • i dig that conductor

  • Is it this venezuelan youth orchestra? Powerful performers and gorgeous people and they have what it takes!

  • @haella1 Check out Dudamel doing Shostakovich 12th.....Did you know that Shostakovich's family was Polish Catholic from Belorus. IMHO Shostakovich greatest composer of all time after Beethoven.

  • @haella1 Thats the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra

  • This is really metal.

  • Después de escuchar esto uno no sabe si es pecado ser ruso... o venezolano. Genial Dudamel! Saludos a todos los hermanos venezolanos desde Argentina.!

  • Virtuosity, passion, fury, fierce, devastating angryness, one of the most powerful music ever composed. Chostakovitch is a Master !!! And I adore Dudamel, it's a conductor who conducts with an irresistible joy, whatever the score. Great performance ! When I hear this music, I see horribles war's pictures, all the bitterness's composer in this short but very impressive movement.

  • Simply wonderful. Gustavo Dudamel is a great director, but the virtuosity of the members of the orchestra is sublime.

  • This movement is in the movie Children of Men, only for about 5 seconds though but it's there :P

  • 32 person doesn't understand music....

  • @steluxlucius I absolutely agree. I think this is a matter of fact.

  • 2:13 Solti

  • i can't believe this is a YOUTH orchestra, its massive

  • Mom whys the director having a seizure?

  • @JuanBejarano92

    Que significa "Seizure"?

    Explain me a bit,pls...

  • @P3ligrosisimo

    Seizure = convulsiones

  • @P3ligrosisimo Ataque.. convulsión

  • @JuanBejarano92 Because Josef Stalin just died. In case you never heard of him, he was sort of like the Russian Henry Kissinger of the time. Imagine you were a descendent of Salvador Allende and you just heard old Henry kicked the bucket? How would YOU react?

  • @moosatious Very odd to compare Stalin to Henry Kissinger!

  • @ArtMad1 This really isn't the place to discuss this sort of thing, but both men were obviously cut out of the same cloth, as the saying goes.

  • Comment removed

  • to me, i hear Stalin's army rising, each orchestra hit emphasizing a single march of the enormous army. the flutes and clarinets telling of the people and how they run, sanity no where to be found. then the violins copy the melody, terror ringing throughout Russia. madness is seen for the long period of time, only to be ended with all out war.

  • @mandel11 shostakovitch actually mentioned that this movement was to be quite literally a ' musical portrait ' of stalin. short and full of violence and anger.

  • This was the most fun I have ever had in an orchestra! iTS UNREAL!

  • Can't you just hear the death march, the infantry rushing forward diving machine gun fire, the artillery cannons load, aim, FIRE! The planes above, the tanks below bombarding enemy fortresses! It's all so vivid! Shostakovich is the ultimate Battle Composer.

  • BRAVO. I LIKE THIS SYMPHONY. AMAZING SYMPHONY

  • I love watching different conductors conduct Shostakovich's pieces. The kind of interpretations I find are full of all kinds of interesting hilarity. I love passionate conductors!

  • When I heard this live played by the Seattle Symphony, I kid you not this movement actually struck massive amounts of fear in me when they played it

  • This movement is a portray of Joseph Stalin

  • this is so insanely good

  • Shostakovich dislikes Stalin. Shostakovich is very unhappy. Stalin dies. Shostakovich kicks ass.

A genius composition and a truly awe-inspiring performance.

  • Today, our orchestra played this piece. When we reached this movement, everyone that was sleeping moments before promptly woke up. Best symphony ever written.

  • Today, our orchestra played this symphony. When we reached this movement, everyone that was sleepig woke up. Best symphony ever written.

  • I see some "dislike votes, which I cannot possibly imagine. This is an epic performance.

  • Shostakovich hated Khrushchev

  • Can you buy a recording of this performance?

  • This is the symphony Shostakovich wrote after Stalins death. It's so full of hate :D

  • @DannekAnnohen maybe not. he was a communist himself even if he had problems with the party

  • @roflmao9999 I dont think he really was. He just had to deal with it in any way, otherwise, he would not have been able to compose. I just read an article about him - thats why i watched this :D

  • @DannekAnnohen funny to know because i'm actually reading a book about his life and i'm going to present it :)

i also argee with you anyway

  • @roflmao9999 you reading testimony? that was an absolutely life changing experience for me.

  • @DannekAnnohen Hate, Shostakovich only hated injustiice and western imperialism and the Stalinist injustice. He was angry. It shows anger. Capistalist Russia has not been able to reproduce the cultural triumphs of the Soviet Union.

  • 30 people don't know what it's good music

  • @PhillipPark90

Slightly different timbres changing the overall sound. In a lesser experienced ensemble, the timbre difference also leads to balance issues.

Call me a purist, but I'm a firm believer that sections should play uniformly.

  • I don't like the fact that half of the trumpet section are playing Bb trumpets.

  • @jsteuernol what do you think is better? only c-trumpets?

  • @SchwarzeDose21

Both have their pros and cons :p

I'd say I use both equally.

  • @jsteuernol whats the difference when they're all transposed to concert pitch?

  • @hyeonj315

    Blend and intonation.

  • this is great pot smoking music. its like you're battling a dragon.

  • Its soooo good! Really gets the heart pumping!!!

  • lowlands 2011

  • Venezuala's got talent

  • Is it the cameraman, or does this orchestra have like 150 players? Fantastic performance with a level of commitment that is just not present very often. My touchstone for this piece is Mitropoulos and the NYP.

  • Gustavo Dudamel IS the EPIC maestro... Absolutely unforgettable.

  • something about this screams Stravinsky-On-Acid to me. Delightful, but SO primitive and powerful!!

  • Stalin hit the dislike button 30 times.

  • @TheJujubes rofl

  • Comment removed

  • @TheJujubes Literally the best comment I have EVER seen on any youtube video. EVER.

  • @TheJujubes in soviet russian, dislike button hits you.

  • Its beautiful to see how "El Sitema" worked so well helping all of these kids in poverty to stray away from danger and make beautiful music!! <3

  • Man's expressive, joyous, and individualistic spirit shone through Shostakovich's music, so irrepressable, not even Stalin could destroy it.

  • Great performance.

It's a shame the direction forgot about the tremendous strings parts.

  • Hahahaha, at 2:23 one of the men on the trumpet stops to wipe spit off his mouth.

  • @srizziler winds do that very often.

  • Boy, that's my boy, glorious, full of life, youthful, vivacious(full of energy ) and LATINO,me too, We are proud of you here in Venezuela

  • 0:00 military confrontation

    1:00 reaches climax

    1:40 sucked in a cyclone

    2:13 imperial

    3:15 respite

    3:40 finale

  • Hell yeah, that's the kind of conductors that actually fit with the fast classical pieces. It's possible that the old and tight ones are more experimented, but they substract part of the energy that this kind of movements are intended to transmit.

  • i can't watch this concert live

or i'll be kicked out laughing xD

  • It would take all of my willpower not to leap out of my seat applauding after that.

  • is... is the conductor gonna be ok

  • There is no argument; this is the most energetic and powerful rendition of this movement I've ever heard. Can't believe this is a youth orchestra! Dudamel is amazing.

  • This music is appropriate for the battle scene of "The Lord of Rings." One of the most powerful renditions since Mravinsky.

  • @kimm0130 There's so much going on in the music that you'd run the risk of overshadowing the cinematography. I just can't imagine any video that would do justice to this movement. At least not in Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. John Williams is a better choice :)

  • The greatest piece ever written in e minor. Just saying.

  • Yes he is having a battle with a ghost, the ghost of Stalin. Shostakovitch said that this was a musical representation of Stalin. You have to interpolate the characteristics of the man. His mercurial nature, his terrifying power and his apparent simplicity. The whole symphony turns on Shostakovitch's reaction to Stalin's death. In the 4th movement he is dancing on his grave! It's quite clear once you know that the 2nd movement is Stalin's theme and the DSCH motif is that of Shostakovitch!

  • on aurait dit une musique de film, genre star wars :D

  • oh i can't forget the orchestra! everyone idolizes dudamel and forget's about the sbyo! they're amazing as well, you can really tell they're always into the music, which isn't always true for orchestra's like the cso. the cso is great, but sometimes you can just tell when the members are having an off day or something.

  • GUSTAVO!!!! he has so much energy i love him! love this piece too... this movement is pure intensity

  • Copy and paste: "Dudamel - Concierto de Año Nuevo 2008 - 03/11 - Guerra de Secciones"

  • I started writing this our for euphonium quartet and pretty quickly decided that that was not going to happen.

  • Haha XD Absolutely NO LIVING SOUL clapped between the movements! That is edicate at it's finest!

  • They absolutely slaughtered this!! AWESOME!!

  • faboulous orchestra, may a bit more brass :D

  • Is the conductor ALSO playing the french horn at 2:55 or is that his evil twin?

  • Dear goodness . . . .

  • wow...so jealous of their playing ability.

I was soooo close to meeting Gustavo in person...NOT FAIR!!!

(my friends from orchestra and I snuck in backstage to try meet him)

  • En 2:45 está cabalgando sobre su corcel, abriéndose paso entre ejércitos oscuros. Bravo por el director y por la orquesta.

  • I think Shostakovich actually wrote in the score to have a seizure at bar 48...

  • Phenomenal and Braavo, Braavo, Braavo... though I bet someone like Fritz Reiner could have achieved the same result without the podium acrobatics as demonstrated here.

  • This is just the best allegro movement ever written.

  • @camillaroseg You still need to listen a lot more classical music, it seems...

  • @cives No,it SEEMSthat you'rea bit pretentious.I obviously was not making a factual statement that I believed was true, but merely putting my opinion forward that I really like this particular movement.I suppose you must be able to make a judgement more valid than mine because you've listened to every classical work ever written?Because your opinion is the only one that counts and everyone should listen to it?If I said "I'm so tired,I'm dying,"would youbelieve that I actually thought I was dying?

  • @camillaroseg Beethoven and Mozart were not bad too ...?

  • @jdemeulenaer123 Of course! :) Again, I was just expressing that I really like this movement, it doesn't mean it's the only movement I like..

  • @camillaroseg And it's the second movement. Shit son.

  • What poncey conducting. Great piece though!

  • @oldhornyman poncey conducting? what does that mean?

    Dudamel is fantastic...

  • What poncey conducting...

  • What poncey conducting...

  • spectacular !!!!

  • holy frack...

  • we played this, fire of eternal glory and october in our marching band show this year :3

  • @CrazyCat162 Coincidentally my high school played the exact same show as yours xD

  • THIS IS UNBELIEVABLY FANTASTIC

    i watch it every day

dudamel is fucking insane!!!! in the best way

  • Shostakovich must have felt such a relief to have expressed himself in this symphony post Stalin.

  • @formeliandialogue Is it not obvious from the music. He is dancing over Stalin's grave.

  • @padredemishijos12

nope, Shosty is dancing on your grandpapa grave. That's because Shosty has benn always hating imbeciles. For this reason Shosty will be dancing on your grave as well. Be sure.

  • @dicthash What you say is irrational. Stalin killed more communists that Hitler, and almost destroyed the USSR. He also betrayed the COMINTERN.

  • What a wonderfully exhilerating piece of music!

  • Unbelievably gorgeous for such young musicians. They blow me away every time I listen.

  • I don't get how Dudamel makes this sound like a Mexican hat dance, but nevertheless it still sounds great!

  • @SqueekyMonkey101 wtf o_O you know he is venezuelan, right?

  • WOW AMAZING

  • el sistema is the solution to world peace

  • The conductor looks like he is a great conductor... of electricity.

He looks like he's spazzing out.

  • DUDAMEL, viejo, eres lo maximo, chamo!!!

    q de pingaaaaaaaa

  • that is some awesome hair

  • He seems to be having an epic sword battle with a ghost... and it looks like he's winning.

  • @TheIvoryGaurdian That's why the music is there. You can't have an epic sword battle without music.

  • did that trumpet guy stop on purpose?

    2:27

  • @slateflash get a score man

  • @slateflash no..(something happen with his nose..:P xaxa..xD )

  • @slateflash

    Yeah, get a score dude...

  • haha our marching band is playing the entire symphony 10 for the 2010 football season xD

  • @azncommie97 hang on, there's a BAND transciption out there?!

  • @iwanabana Yeah there is. It's slightly diffirent with who is playing what part but all the melodies are the same

  • @azncommie97 i've been searching for a transciption for so long. which publisher is it from? or who arranged it?

  • @iwanabana i thinks its by someone named higginbottom, but im not sure about the spelling of the name. il msg u later and tell you

  • AH!!! Even a rearranged marching version the flute part is a pain in the behind, doesn't help that I have to use a 18 year old Gemeinhardt that is damaged and in need of repair...

Still this sounds amazing, at least the arrangement I am playing...

  • Gustavo Dudakovitch ... thank you !

Please, I want to hear now Gustavo Dudakovief ... (the 5th symphony please ....)

and then Gustavo Dudamahler in the 6th ...

    and then ....

    BRAVO SBYOV

  • The Best performance I've ever heard, that's for sure!!!!

  • The Best performance I've ever heard, that's for sure!!!!

  • Wow!!! This is fantastique. Both Dudamel and, of course, Shostakovich, the greatest composer of the XXth Century!!!

  • Just such an incredible piece wth an incredible group of musicians. End of discussion.

  • Performing this tomorow can't wait :D

  • wow that was amazing thank u

  • Se me aguaron los ojos

  • This is perhaps the most authentic interpretation of this movement that I've heard, if Mravinsky's debut is to be THE standard.
