This was a required piece for our district choir contest in '69 in the Dayton, OH metro area. It gave us fits! The lyrics were sappy, the parts were hard to learn, and it was impossible to stay on key. The only time we sang it on key was the last two rehearsals before the contest, and the contest itself. But I guess we did okay-- we got straight superior ratings and went on to get straight superior ratings at state level. This orchestral version is much better than the choral version.
I remember the TV show as well. It was based on the movie "I Remember Mama", starring Irene Dunne in the title role, and directed by the great George Stevens. Both are classics and can't be beat.
In the early days of television there was a wonderful program called "I Remember Mama", starring Peggy Wood. The program was about an immigrant family from Norway and took place in San Francisco around the turn of the 20th century. This most beautiful of Edvard Grieg's music was the programs theme song. To this day I cry when I hear it.

This is a more suitable tempo for this song. I love this piece beyond words; despair and uncertainty riddled with strength and hope.
