This entire movie was fucked up, especially this scene. This always scared the shit out of me as a kid. It was also way way higher on the creepiness scale than the new one with Johnny Depp. Except kudos for using real little people in this one, and the use of the word "snozberries".
I love how I can watch this movie over and over and still pick up little things. Case in point: Mike Teevee. I recently noticed how, true to his character, Mike views everything in his life like it's one big T.V. show. When Augustus Gloop falls into the chocolate river, Mike quips, "Man overboard!" and in this scene, he gleefully exclaims, "This is terrific!" And then watch him during Veruca's tirade in the geese room; he's resting his hands on his knees, just sitting back and enjoying the show.
@YoruichiHaruno think it was creepy to you? the actors reactions when he starts singing are genuine
-from the tv tropes wiki
"For the riverboat scene, Wonka's ranting poem was not in the script, hence the disturbed looks on the actors faces, who thought Wilder was actually losing his mind."
For the riverboat scene, Wonka's ranting poem was not in the script, hence the disturbed looks on the actors faces, who thought Wilder was actually losing his mind.
Look past the singing dwarves with jaundice and the constant child maulings; the fear factor in this one boils down to this scene. The single most frightening sequence in all of ’70s cinema. And we're talking about a decade that brought us The Exorcist and Alien. In one master stroke, this film says, "Hey kids, this is what dropping acid is like. The first time's free!”
Interesting fact I just found out: In a recent interview with director Mel Stuart, he mentions that even he was surprised by the scream Willy lets out at the end of his little "speech". He knew Willy was going to go nuts in the tunnel, but he had no idea that Gene was going to get quite THAT into it and do the whole scream bit! :)
screw teh weird effects and pictures the scariest thing about that boat ride was wonka himself---how the hell did they make light reflect off genes eyes without any light on in the scene? o.O bricks woulda been shat right when i noticed that especially
and lol @ that putz who tried to sing along to lighten the mood at first xD
this is so fucking funny. it just gets more uneasing and uneasing until willy wonka is just so over the top hes just screaming at the top of his lungs. hahahahahaha classic
@THEVASART At the top of his lungs is right! I'm a little embarassed to admit this, but it took years before I realized that the weird, unearthly sound we hear at the end of WIlly's "act" was, in fact, him screaming! Put it this way, I haven't heard very many people scream like that. Speaking of which, I hope for Gene's sake that they didn't need to do too many takes of him screaming (talk about a great way to wind up with a sore throat and/or lose your voice)!
it kinda seems like a metaphorical foreshadowing of the 'journey' they go on where each of them gets 'disqualified' in their own way, or maybe he's just crazy and wants to fuck with them xD
@annie10103 Also, Wilder didn't tell Charlie's actor how pissed off Wonka would be during the "You LOSE!" scene, the actors weren't told about the Oompa-Loompas, or the candy room. All to make their reactions more genuine.
Source: the DVD commentary, DVD documentary, and TVTropes.
I think what creeped me out the msot about this scene was how it came after "there is no life I know to compare with your imagination" song. So this really after showing some of the greatest bits of his imagination and dreams you get his dark thoughts and nightmares which he concedes that he doesn't know where he's going.
There's no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going There's no knowing where we're rowing Or which way the river's flowing Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane a-blowing? Not a speck of light is showing So the danger must be growing Are the fires of Hell a-glowing? Is the grisly reaper mowing? Yes! The danger must be growing For the rowers keep on rowing And they're certainly not showing Any signs that they are slowing
To be honest I didn't get this scene. I didn't scare me it was just so random. The same with his outburst to charlie at the end. That didn't scare but I was affronted to think Wonka could be such a dick when all charlie and grandpa did was fly around the room, burp a bit and then come down. How much cleaning did the oompa loompas really need to do in there afterwards? It wasn't like they were at music festival and left shit down the walls. I bet some lazy arse Oompa Loompa bitched.

Grandpa Joe is the true villain of this story... He's a spy! Stealing all of Wonka's secrets.
And what have we at the end? Grandpa actually goads poor Charlie to give the gobstopper to the supposed villain and collect the reward money.
What a sick old coot.
