  • This man is a total genius. I really appreciate the fact that he can write music in various genres. He's really open minded and an overall great musician.

  • I feel this song really deserved to be a little more famous back in the day.

  • STEVE VAI, STEVE VAI, STEVE VAI, STEVE VAI!... NO!... DEVIN TOWNSEND!... YES!

  • I love the perfect solo in this.

  • The album cover is fascinating.

  • My hair

    All that I've grown

And it's all that keeps me warm

My hairline is all that I comb

So I won't let it slip away

    How long

'Til my hair falls out, falls out, falls out

I'll part it on the other side

  • i really want to hear this on a pop radio station. it would fit in pretty well

  • @ub27020 Think we could get a drive going to load up a station with this?

  • @ub27020 yeah like a heavy pop song lol

  • So I have been listening to this over and over for days now..

  • This song needs to be at the end of a teen movie

  • This album is so powerful, it always feels like I am cutting up a bag of onions. And if you ever feel out of touch with humanity, just play Biomech.

  • I'll have one of you eventually, life!

  • Favorite song.

  • EPIC

  • i agree with huhholi i kinda knew of him through steve vai..a great muso...but old devs made his mark got his own signature peavy flying v...it may have got him a foot hold working with vai but he's surpassed that im only really getting into all his new music...but the guys clever and just an all round whizz kid and he makes me laugh...doesnt take himself to seriously and thats a good sign..no huge ego to contend with..more power to his elbow..from an old aging rocker besides ziltoid needs him

  • now this truly is one of the best forms of musical talent there is in this world.

  • THIS is life

  • Thank you Devin for making beautiful amazing music, and cheers to those few who truely GET IT and have had life changing experiences from Devins music. Truely an incredible inspiration!

  • I think I'm gonna start every day with this song, it's unbelievably optimistic...

  • 333 likes, 3 dislikes....perfect harmony, on a Devin Townsend video, of course!

  • genuinely makes me happy to be alive.

  • One of the best cds ever.

  • @giarex totally. This album is like a rainbow of all feelings. Bombastic/confident(Seventh Wave), Hopeful/Uplifting(Life), Sad/Crushing(Bastard), Chill(Death Of Music) etc etc

  • Youtube comments make my day though

  • Was that Terence Mckenna at the end??!!

  • I guess 3 people didn't have a life.

  • Fucking Awesome!

  • ooooohh my god.. i just found this song and i loved it... fucking gooood

  • My life is all that I've known And it's all that keeps me here My time is all that I own So I won't let it slip away... How long can this life go on Who we are what we are... I'll see you on the other side Wouldn't you rather live it on your own Even when it bends you over So when it comes time to go home You don't let them fade away... How long can this all go on? How long till it's over? how long till it all comes down? how bad do we need a new reminder?
  • Had the joys of hearing and singing along to this song live! Devin Townsend really is an under-rated genius.....and long may it remain!!

  • I love this song, and I don't use love lightly.

  • Devin truly is a mastermind.always liked this one

  • One day when I fly through the universe with my delectable space ship, this song shall be playing on my stereo at all times... think how awesome it would be!

  • @Lazzle22 hahaha.. take me with u when u go

  • "theres an awareness..." RIP my friend Jessika. And thanks Devin for making this song. Therapeutic.

  • summer tune

  • I'm not really a Devin fan in general (I'm more into classic rock and metal) but god damn this is an absolute bit of genius.

The music is just stunning, and the lyrics are so real. Wonderful to hear a true artist unlike the stuff we are fed on the radio.

  • @forsoup Well do you like Strapping Young Lad?

  • liquid metal

  • I can't help but be a Devin fanboy. freaking amazing. I listen to this song over and over and it's still not old. nevermind his other 100 or so other songs ha. INCREDIBLE

  • Possibly my favourite track by Devin. Absolutely amazing.

  • ffs i cant stop listening to this song,it rocks my world :D i fuckin love it :D

  • the 1911 feature just doesn't seem to go with this video :(

  • Loving this song~! It seems like the drums are a bit too high in the mix though

  • love this

  • the sound track to my life

  • great song

  • 2 people need to get a life!

  • This song is the anthem of life. It's like the whole positive energy releases from your body when you listen to it.

  • miss you mum. See you on the other side.

  • All hail Devin!

  • In each Devin Townsend piece in youtube the commenting could be turned off, because it's mostly always stupid shit. Who cares about Steve Vai, I know most of the people don't, and I think Devy is quite steadily known already around the world, so why boost your ego with this underated rare stuff. The guy is making good music and get's a living out of it, mission accomplished. ...and why do I write shit like this in Youtube, wtf?

  • @huhholi Ego boostage? :P

  • I love this badn, "winter" is one of my sleeping songs :)

  • What album of his has songs that sound like this?

  • @Swizzy DTBand - 'Accelerated Evolution' is close to Ocean Machine in style. Also check out the 'Terria' album.

  • @HalalKafir I think I will check into Ocean Machine. It seems very.. stylistic. I own Terria, and I've got to say I just cannot get into it. Maybe a few more listens would prove resourceful, but it is just so synth driven. Not really what I was hoping for.

  • @MyEggIsBoiled Man, you gotta stick with 'Terria' - genius disc. I don't really think it's synth driven at all but there is a lot of acoustic guitar, which I love, and layers. Ocean Machine -'Biomech' is Devin's magnum opus but 'Terria's is up there in my book. Also, the 'Infinity' album is great - check out the 'Christeen' video on YT if you haven't already.

  • @HalalKafir I will check this out. This album just seems so.. much more of an instrumentalist lover's album. Terria is all atmosphere.. which can be nice, I just feel it's far overdone is all.

  • the sound track to my life

  • My favorite song of all time, I can't help getting a shiver when I hear it. My son, Devin (just a coincidence) loves it too. This song is the best thing Mr. Townsend has ever done. What an amazing man....

  • This song brings out a tear and makes you appreciate life and all the little things around you. A+

  • I couldn't for the life of God get this song out of my head at school today. *sigh* It feels so good to hear it once more.

  • This song always helps bring back the good times ^_^

  • If on my deathbed I think this is the last song I'd want to hear, then go out with a happy smile

  • @ViperRob42

Then the line "See you on the other side" will be a great message for your loved ones.

  • This song was the last song Devin played at Bloodstock open air the other day and i was about 6 rows from the front and fucking loved it to say the least he blew me away aswell as making the whole crowd laugh quite alot

  • @BuckaD

3 Rows myself, my friend was the one who didn't know who Ziltoid was (neither did I, but I kept quiet :P )

It was a trucking awesome set. I'd never heard of Devin before, but I won't be forgetting him :)

  • @BuckaD Spot on man it was a great set, especially this song

  • Saw him 3 days ago, fucking mindblowing

  • anybody know where i can get his tour dates?

  • @TheElusiveBirdMan hevydevy.com

  • One of my favorite songs and definitely Top 5 of Devin's work. Beautiful.

  • i get what he's saying though. this song does sounds overproduced and poppy, and the chorus. its really catchy. but i still like it because of the catchiness, and because its devin townsend. :)

  • Saw Devin in Eindhoven yesterday, he ended his set with life. It was awsome!

  • I love Devin and his work - but this one (and this is the only time you will here me say it) feels a liiiitle bit Jonas Brothers.

  • @thecoffebell The Jonas brothers were still curd cheese in some Wisconsin mall window when this miracle piece was conceived and crafted. Your lacking attitude here, buddy.

  • @cs7877

I agree with you but I can understand why he might feel that way. But the thing is that there is a difference between being melodic and beautiful and being commercial and cliche drivel. This song may not be very aggressive or heavy but it's certainly not poppy or simplistic. Far from it, Devins masterwork is his ability to make atmospheric progressive metal that is easy to listen to but very accomplished and nuanced. No other artist sounds like him.

You can't say the same for the JBs.

  • @cs7877 I have enough respect for Devins work to speak freely of it. I think he can handle it.

  • Fantastic song from a fantastic album by an outstanding artist/singer/musician. Devin Townsend is so good : i mean how many can write songs like this one ?

  • HOLY FUCK!!! what a song...

  • This song still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

  • Seeing this song live was one the best things in my life, ever.

  • Super cool cette chanson, je kiffe à donf!!

  • I find it rather hard to believe that the same guy wrote an album like Ocean Machine the same time he was writing City for SYL. Devy is fucking awesome.

  • @MICKADETH He's got bi-polar disorder, which is why he's got such a diversity of music. When he was angry, he wrote SYL. When he wasn't angry but really really high, he wrote stuff like this. Now he's not angry anymore, and he's not high either. So now it's just him, which is why Ki and Addicted are so great and different.

  • @dty06 I prefer to think of it more as his evolution as an artist and his desire to try different things, but I'm sure his disorder has at least a bit to do with it.

  • @NaturalCorrection He has said it himself, the anger/rage in him took the form of SYL while the more mellow stoner part was DTB (including Ocean Machine). His music is just as bi-polar as he was. Now that he's moved beyond that, everything he makes from here on out will be him. Not a stoner who can play guitar, not some raging lunatic that hates everything, just some nerdy Canadian guy with a wife and kid who makes music. And that's just fine with me.

  • @dty06

Meh maybe you guys are right. I'm sure you know more about it then me. I just find that to be such a simple explanation, but you're right, he has said it himself.

  • @NaturalCorrection His disorder had a lot to do with his previous music. I remember hearing in interviews that he often didn't take his bi-polar meds when he was writing SYL stuff, and was back on for the DTB stuff. and dty06 is totally right too. he's just himself now, and not relying on drugs or disorders to write his music, but finding it within himself. man I love Devy and damnit, because of him I'm now in love with Anneke Van Giersbergen...

  • i think devin blew off all his anger in SYL. XD

  • So atmospheric and beautiful. It just flows perfectly. Hard to believe this is the same man behind Strapping Young Lad.

  • true tht m8

  • @SoulflySox Listen to Ghost and Ki. Both blew me away, and make me believe that the man who writes this music is merely using Devin's name (even though I know it to be completely false!). The guy has such a great range of creativity!

  • @SoulflySox Townsend always said he had identified better with his solo work than with his work with SYL, that he never wanted SYL to be the focus of his work even though that's what it became.

  • @SoulflySox I guess bipolar disorder isn't always bad!

  • @SoulflySox not really because you just described syl

  • I love the melody and the power of Devin voice and chorus

    :)

  • This song is fucking incredible. I wish he'd write another album like this because it's probably my favourite album of all time.

  • Check out Terria, also by Dev. It's also very atmospheric and has one of the best guitar solos ever part-waty through the track Deep Peace.

  • one of my favourite songs of all time :P

  • Comment removed

  • This song is epic. The distinctive vibe of the music takes my mind on a ethereal journey like never before. Simply a masterpiece.

  • just bought this CD Devin ROCKS! =]

  • must hav th mp3

  • one of my fav D.T songs that got me though alot, I thank him for such brilliance often in my thoughts, and I'm glad he touched so many people! ‡->

  • Dude all Devins work is amazing. When he says he's not a musical genius it's just him being humble. Which makes him even better. Devs a genius!!!! Period. No question

  • amen to that!

  • Dev is a GOD!

  • What a contrast to SYL!

  • Seriously, that opening made me go "what?"

I'm glad I'm going to see him again with BtBaM and Cynic. It's going to be one epic show.

  • You're all fuckin lame, this song is nothing compared to his other work. Have any of you ever heard devin in an interview. He is no genius, he just has a knack for writing. Just because you want him to be deep and mysterious so that you can feel like you're some edgy pseudo intelectual doesn't make it true. Grow up.

  • how about you all grow up, stop yelling at each other and calling each other lame etc, comparing devins songs and whatnot, just fucking enjoy them because theyre all good music.

  • Best song from the best album in the history of mankind.

  • lmao

  • This is deep. Very deep music.

"I'll see you on the other side" - One the best lines I ever heard.

  • Yes, but what exactly does it mean? That is the riddle, i guess. The whole album is quite enigmatic, and can fuck you up emotionally if you really listen to it, and like me wasn't prepared for it

  • I think its about seeing the person you want to see on the other side, or heaven. At least that's my interpretation.

  • I'd like to find an original version of this album without Devin's name slapped on the cover, because that'd be awesome!

  • why is this comment -4? the original would likely be worth more because it would be harder to find.. hes not bashing devin.

  • That's what I meant! I love Devin, he's in my top 10 guitarists! I'd just be really cool to find an original copy of this.

  • BEST. SONG. EVERRRRRRRR!

  • the soundtrack, to my, LIFE! :) everytime life seems a little hard you can put that on your ipod on your way home from work or just take a walk! it´ s like, one of the greatest gifts! someone have their gods, i got my music :D

  • I love this song, it is one of the best I've ever heard.

  • I'm glad this wasn't a overcomercialized pop hit, fuck the mainstream, Devin is our best kept secret and a genius that only cool people know of! =)

  • @ViperRob42 So you're saying if this song was more popular and was a hit, you'd like it less? Yeah, sure, keep thinking of yourself as a "cool" person for liking an artist.

  • underrated and awesome

5 stars dev you are the fucking king

    fuck steve vai haha

  • @Andreasleon27 I agree with you, but let's not offend steve vai, he's also awsome :)

  • @Andreasleon27 can't you just simply like something without insulting something else in turn?

  • Why wasn't this a pop hit on the radio????

WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE KNOW THE NAME DEVIN TOWNSEND??

  • Because the best things in life are free and / or less known

  • NOT EVERYONE deserves this :)

  • all my life I thought i was relax, I just realize i have been living in fear.... ROCK ON DEVIN!!!!

  • Townsend is a fucking musical beast.

  • "This is THAT guy from SYL? Holy crap..."

  • wonderful mix of industrial sounds to an melancholic, almost power poppish, melody. just pure awesomeness.

but what does he say in the end?

  • RE: Daswede92 -

BEGINNING: "in the exuberance of life, there's an awareness that one day we will have to look death in the eye."

END: "In death, not only are the mightiest and most humble brought down to the same level, but we're no different from any other organism."

  • thanks

  • I def want this played at my funeral, so ppl can smile and remember back, while simentanously enjoying the genius that is Devin Townsend

  • Haha, a song like this played at a funeral...

  • actually a good idea

  • This was the favourite song to a very close friend of mine. She passed away at the start of the year.

    R.I.P Maria

  • R.I.P Maria

I'll see her on the other side

  • Just like in the song.

  • RIP Maria, I guess.

  • @somekindoffan Then she took this song with her to heaven...... and made God very happy!

  • @somekindoffan "I'll see you on the other side!"

  • i still can't believe this came out in 1997!!!

it must've been a total shock to SYL fans.

    cause it is to me

  • If pop-rock were like this instead of what it is, I'd never listen to anything else.

  • Holy shit. This is like pop metal.

  • Oh wow, this is definitely different from SYL. I never expected such a pop rock-sounding song from Devin, especially considering the lyrics from Far Beyond Metal.

  • There is an actual video for this song, but I can never find it anywhere....

  • omfg I love this song so fucking much! The way it starts always sends chills down my spine! Bloody amazing!

  • supreme song

  • Great song.

  • Love this song <3 So awesome. It's the tune that got me in to Devin.
