  • can you make a tutorial on how to do this?

  • hi man , how u do icons like that??? I have ubuntu 8.04 hardy , can I do that in icons in down of the desktop? please replay

  • by the way i use Ubuntu 8.04 hardy and its amazing im using compiz

  • what dock is that and how do u get Aixgl

  • Argh! To be honest ...too much eye-candy makes me sick.

  • I bet, you like ugly people :P

  • Lol! Good one ! But unfortunately no.

    =P

  • I dont get this type of comments, why is there people focused so much in the User interface ? in reality, beautiful people prefers simple, uncomplicated and pretty operative systems like Mac os X over linux, no matter what you all say, linux will never be as pretty as mac os x in its darwin unix core.

  • dude, you did not catch it.

  • I use Linux but what Theinsane 102 said made me laugh so hard!..dunno why, look at his comment rating (-6)...it was just a bit of fun guys!! (still dunno why I find it so funny!)(litarally cried out laughing)

  • @conorusulli - lol, i think the word shitter did it for me. i rofled as well :D

  • yeah theinsane102 is funny.. I think he don't even know that linux is free and powerful os.

  • lol. hes just oblivious to the fact that it just, isnt, going down the shitter.

  • amazing

  • System specs, please?

  • muy bueno....

  • 2 words.... LINUX ROCKS!!!!!!!

  • You must have a really fast computer, because not only did you run all those applications (including a screen capture app) and XGL as smooth as silk, but GIMP loaded almost instantly! amazing!

  • That looks excellent and every thing but i know you like have 1 million RAM or something(lol),My computer can barely handle running My Opera+IE7+Miro+Satvod+Realplayer+All the pretty little features of XP....

  • This is not XP this is linux...

  • point being??????? use wine???????

  • It can never be xp im a xp user windows is so stupid so we cant do that on xp

  • One thing I find interesting about all of Bill's presentations (as opposed to Steve's or Mark Shuttleworth's interviews, where Mark & Steve address the general public), Bill ALWAYS, every single time, addresses the business community at these keynotes.

  • good movie too short!!!! but ubuntu 6.06 is quite old now u should make a new one with 7.10 but u cant get beryl any more so u ould have to use compiz fusion

  • yes microsoft, go to the stor and ask for the newes linux 2008 by microsoft

  • it might be free then like now

  • Boycoott

  • Is this by microsoft ?

  • nope, it isn't lol. it's by linux

  • bullshitter

  • i installed ubuntu, looking forwrd to install beryl, but then i learned that it is unstable, they recomended compiz fusion, but it is a bunch of files that i have no fucking idea how to set up or even download. Why are things so unfriendly in linux. I don't think it will ever take over MS OS if it isn't become a little more newbie friendly. Now, where do i learn how to download binaries and all that jazz?

  • Linux has a long way to go before it comes like Windoze or Mac OS. But you can use sudo apt-get or sudo aptitude in terminal to get apps and also synaptic package manager which has everything in one place on the repository.

  • I'm using ubuntu right now and I half way agree with you. It's pretty easy to use for linux and any user can install and get there basic needs up easily without actually knowing the terminal. However, if you want to say, watch a movie on it you still need to install a set of programs and and the one movie player they recommend is kinda crappy, I think its Oogle, I'd rather use Xine. Just like I'd rather use M player as to totem which is utter crap.

  • i agree with you, audio, video, and wireless cards can be a problem too, but if something works on Linux, it works extremely fast!

  • I have 3 days experince with linux, and had no problems with it.

  • ubuntu of course !

  • guys should i migrate from vista to ubuntu? please explain

  • Depends, Linux is great if you have time to learn and you are patient enough to look for drivers and stuff. Looks good and all aplications are free. But if you work with your pc and you are used to your os, migrating to linux is quite difficult. Most things are not compatible and you'll need to re learn almost everything.

  • Would I have to download drivers for every little application, like for video programs, audio programs, media players, messenger programs etc?

  • Well, linux distros are very complete lately, and there are some equivalent aplications for everything (not the same, but similar). You may have trouble if you have a non regular webcam, printer or video card. In my case, I had lots of trouble with my 7.1 soundcard. Dont know about plugins and codecs.

  • What are the native file types that you can play prior to installing codecs and which codecs did you experience trouble with?

  • Just install VLC, It plays everything on linux fine.

  • Haven't tried VLC jet but I have installed MPlayer and I haven't installed a single codec since and can watch all movies.

  • what are the settings of your dock... my icons always flying over my screen.. :( pls..

  • You have a sick freaking processor gimp opened in like 500 milliseconds... no apparent speeding up of video...

  • die kassierer - blumenkohl am pillemann? nup not it. anyone know da song?

  • with things like this, I probably wouldn't ever get any work done. :P

  • What kind of crappy games do YOU play?

  • Freggin' gorgeous Stan :)

I'm sure you've updated to Feisty since this video, but still pretty cool. BTW, your probably already know that Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) was released today, and it's pretty sweet. Compiz-Fusion comes packaged with it.

    -Austin

  • AustinOlson - Have you portained them?

  • well , can i run beryl and kiba dock with 512 mb RAM and 1.8 ghz processor ? plz respond , tnx ;)

  • yes u can :)

maybe like a 128 mb gfx card too??

and that would be all :)

  • i like these animation when a windows is opened or when you through it over the desktop

  • Can you please tell me what type of program are you using for make this screen capturing with ubuntu.

    thank you

  • what's the song?

  • To the people asking for hardware specs to run this, the answer is : not that much. Yeah it looks extremely cool (and so people think it require über-gear to run).

Don't try drawing lines between Vista and this, It's beyond me how Vista can accomplish to suck up so much juice in order to render its relatively (compared to beryl/compiz) modest eye-candy.

  • becuase vista is the suxs, it is amazing how linx can render so well, i like the layout of this but i like 7.4 the way i have it set up.

  • I have no clue on how to code or anything but I'd say it's probably an inneffcient code. Vista was supposed to use a completely redone windows source code but they didn't want to delay it so they just revamped xp I believe.

Since Microsoft is starting to look at computers as legitimate gaming machines I'd say they're gonna try to make the new one way more easy on the hardware

  • You better not comment on it then !

If you are curious try to check out that code. Do you know how those people are giving their lives for these programs and operating systems. Stop believing and start learning !

Microsoft ? what the fuck is that ?

  • I'd like to know what this computer has got on it. Hardware wise.

  • linux neednt fast computer

  • Looks so fast, how is it that fast? What computer are you using?

  • cool dock B)

  • the song is "die kassierer - blumenkohl am pillemann". its a swedish band.

  • haha

  • what software do i need to record the screen ? i once used some software but i can't remember the name

  • Software is overrated. I just use my computer without software. It works fine. I just stare at a blank screen all day. Okay, I'm getting dangerously wierd now. I'm going to sleep.

  • good night

  • very nice, very nice

and what is that song? i like

  • wow dude... what song is this?!

  • aw leave windows alone haha

  • very god OS, doesn't need the equipment that vista requires and it's free... windows days are soon to be over aleluia!! :D

  • And they say that microsoft copy ideas form mac jajaja

  • where did you install from?

also, what are the system reqs?

Beryl runs PERFECTLY on my 2.8 gighz P4 with 512 of ram and a 64 mb integrated graphics card, with AIGLX, but will kiba dock we slowed down by the physics?

    thanks

(I've got Ubuntu 6.10 with Gnome)

  • Kiba-dock works fine on a 1.8 with gig ram, only slowing when Beryl has transparent cube activated.

  • Dude what Window Manager are you using on top of beryl?

  • I'm using gnome.

  • eme1rald, and kiba dock

  • recorded with xvidcap for all you people wondering =]

it's a cool vid =D wish i could get my kiba-dock working! i can only actually use it when run as root... and that launches my programmes as root which isn't good! anyways, this isn't the time or the place to moan about that

  • i have installed beryl as well on my SUSE 10.1, but where can i get that launcher from

  • just for your information ,people, Ubuntu is a great operating system, but it DOES NOT come with these effects installed. They are in a BETA state and therefore can cause crashes. Nevertheless, i suggest you switch to this wonderful OS. It's far better than windows

  • Anything is better than windows. I prefer Mac, but linux is pretty sweet too.

  • likin it

how do you do that on ubuntu?? i got the 6.10 =s

  • how did you record this? :)

  • how the hell did you get gimp to fly open that fast? It whizzes by the splash screen faster than I've ever seen before

  • May I ask how to install that ?

I taped sudo apt-get isntall aixgm but the package wasn't found !

    Please Help

  • Id like to see a live CD of this.

  • Lol

  • Ps AIGLX and XGL +Compix/Beryl are two different things.

  • If you don't use all your processors power then it just wasted, so why not waste them on great effects like this.

  • ... beryl barely touches your processor. (Uses OpenGL, _hardware_ accelerated)

  • god damn it vmware

  • I don't know what you are whining about really. Eye candy that takes 1-2% of my cpu processing power (have watched it myself)? Yes please.

  • See, as novel and great as this is, I really find it quite ridiculous. The thing I like about the Mac interface is that it is subtle: you have all of these niceties that just melt away behind usability, and intuitivity is more of a focus than eye candy.

It's a drain on the processors and solves few problems. (Though, admittedly, it's not completely useless.

  • Linux needs to be able to show off eye candy. IBM has already declared that the server wars are over and Linux won. Microsoft is trying to embrace and extend its way into Novell.

Linux as a desktop is going to need some good eye candy in order to compete. Linux already has security down, which is the big "promise" of vista.

  • Nobody cares if you want it or not. The title is "AiXgl on Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper" not "Would you use AiXgl on Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper"

Get over yourselves and go write some code

  • It's not a dock. It's just an application launcher. A better one than ever exists or will exist on windows. Having four desktops instead of one is the next best thing to having dual monitors. Apparently it's a good enough idea that OS X is adopting it in Leopard. If eye candy is unimportant and is just a resource hog, why don't all you micro$oft evangelists use Window$ 3.1?

  • is it bite Memory/ GPU like vista?

  • I use beryl at home. The eye candy is nice, but it's the task management improvements that keep me coming back for more. I'm addicted to that lower left hand corner.

  • The ability to scroll to other open programs without clicking that is innovation!

  • ME LIKIE EYECANDY :P

  • Where's the garbage files?

  • To tell you the truth Kiba-dock is the ugliest thing I have ever seen. I don't want my dock to have physics, its cool, but I don't want it. I want my dock to hold my icons in order and jump when I click them.

  • The unfortunate truth of the matter is that eye candy wins users. Sure, there are other usability improvements that need to be made (and are, of course, being worked on), but there are windows users out there who may see this video and realize that Linux is not necessarily just for pasty, chunky, four-eyed geeks anymore.

  • wow...thats pretty much all linux has going for it.

  • ...

I don't know where to start, I think i'll just let you wallow in your ignorance.

  • real improvements? like what? a supercookie to eat all your information?

  • Really nice! I don't have a need for it. It's just eyecandy. On all of my windows boxes I turn that stuff off. I would rather have a machine that ran faster then all of that. If they spent as much time working on real improvements as they do on this type of thing then Linus wold be further along. It is really nice to look at if you are really in the need for that though.

  • Do you seriously think more people are working on this kind of thing than on general areas of Linux? Think before you post.

P.S. The OS is called Linux, Linus is the guy who started the kernel.

  • By improving the gaphics system in X to do these fancy effects, the overall performance of linux has improved dramatically.

Also, how can you turn something off on windows when it isn't there in the first place?

  • Wow, I've never seen a more useless waste of cpu time.

Honestly, how does that make my computing experience more efficient and productive?

And what the hell is with the bloody dock? If I wanted to run OS X I'd by a Mac.

  • Then do it, and stop griping at the Linux users who want choices.

And it doesn't, but it gets boring staring at a static, rigid screen all day.

  • Guess what, the point of AIGLX is to have the video card handle all the fruity look'n'feel instead of the CPU. I bet the CPU is idling most of the time. It's similar to Apple's window manager.

  • You mean waste of GPU time right? This takes load OFF the CPU :P

  • You are right. We are wasting some many resources for stupid visual effects.

  • It's not a waste of CPU time: all of that is based on GPU power.

However, all the effects like wobbly windows and slow shading will reduce productivity a bit.

  • So, don't enter Youtube, what will make you better in this stupid video site.

And about dock, os x is not free. I you want a free solution linux is better.

  • its free

  • Beryl is actually nice eye candy, but is in its current state quite unusable and counter-productive. All the lessons learnt with other windows managers have been thrown down the toilet and the configuration of beryl is too messy to configure it to be usable.

also the initial timings of effects quickly become unbearable for any kind of serious work.

but it still KICK ASS and is a GREAT improvement to X!

(nvidia 9xxx driver+xorg7.1 runs aiglx out of the box!)

  • hello. if you think a gui config interface is 'messy' then why not open up a ste and edit the configuation yourself?

the inital timings are unbearable? change them

  • Maybe that's why he said "initial"...

  • OMG!

  • Nice vid, what program did u use to capture this vid?

  • Just distracting

  • It's going down.

    (...says Yung Joc)

  • I hope it doesn't use any teeth!

(...says a confused non-Engrish speaking guy)

  • this is quite funky!

    (...says a Mac fanboy)

  • the green looks really nice
