I served aboard Ice Beakers, and 44' Motor Life Boats throughout my CG tours. To those of you who use this to post hatefull comments about these Guys, you have no idea! Untill you put yourselves in harms way, by racing a 44' boat into 30' surf and reaching into the water to save some poor soul from deaths grip, you have no right to judge! The reward, none. The look on the faces of those who you pull from the water is worth the price of admission! Trust me!

PERIOD !!!..and that ANY OTHER motto is UNAUTHORIZED !! and that they agreed with me, that it is DISREPECTUFL for the Swimmers to use the motto of the PJ's, That changing ONE WORD, does not make it alright for the swimmers to use that motto.." Not surprisingly, it's also used by the Vietnam Dust-Off Association, and literally dozens of Fire Departments and civilian SAR organizations all over the World. I guess the bottom linre is, saving lives In ANY capacity is the important part, not WHO does it.

you need to be as comfortable in heavy seas as you would be walking around your house. stay calm in extremely stressful situations. strengthen your lungs, you need to have good lung capacity, and have an interest in emergency medical care. you WILL be a certified EMT by the time you graduate. I'm not an AST(rescue swimmer) but my buddy is.

if you want to do it then do it... You wont pass if you arent able to meet their standards... Alaska has some of the most difficult and extreme rescues so i would answer no your not gonna get to alaska right away... And in regards to the one save a month depending on where your stationed you will have more or less saves depending on the weather and what not.. But if your not fully committed then dont do it
