TenStarsplus!!! Thank you for sharing this video with us!!! It's fantabulous!!! I would love to hear Mary Hopkin, Joni Mitchell, and Judy Collins singing this together as a trio!!! I wonder if any one out there can pull a rabit out of the hat and make it happen???!!! That would be the song of the century!!!! Stephen
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
@Proculled This was recorded from the TV onto a reel to reel machine, but you can buy Mary singing this on her CD "Live at the "Royal Festival Hall" via her official website
Last night I remember Mary answered upon an interviewer's ask "Which song do you like best?". She said instantly without hesitation "Both Side Now". This is one of her singing songs in her highschool days. Only very few boys & girls could this in lives.
I have just now...yesterday...bought a new cellphone from Sony. It is very new but difficult to use completely. So i missed and made insufficient touch this screen and misgrading your video?
Sorry me.
How are you?
Ate you watching TV? Jp or Pguiy?
Those were the days in espanol is nice too but i have to say that was a karaoke version..
Initially I assumed I heard Judy Collins here. Later in the song, you can detect Mary's Welsh accent. Very, very good version. I think it's the best compromise between the solemn Joni Mitchell version and the upbeat Judy Collins version.
@TurboVW2004 I agree, I love Judy's and of course Joni Mitchell's versions, but Mary does sing this beautifully, THis as you can hear was recorded from the TV but there is a live recording of this song from the "Royal Festival Hall" cd and it is amazing, for a full track list go to her official site at maryhopkinDOTcom
@richpat Looking at this stills of Mary Hopkin is almost like looking at pictures of myself. We look like sisters, except she is prettier of course, but it's close.
As I say on the right hand side in the more info section, this is taped from the 1970 Andy Williams show, It was on the TV, and I was watching it, so apart from the fact it really does sound like her it was her...Honest!
I was obsessed with this song for some reason. I can almost remember watching this. I'm very familiar with Collins and Mitchell's version. this definitely is Mary Hopkin. I'm trying to come up with a way of playing it.
She never did a studio recording of it, but there is a wonderful live version available"Live at the Royal Festival Hall 1972" via her website at maryhopkinDOTcom
THIS IS Mary Hopkin not Judy Collins however Judy and Joan was Mary's childhod idols and I once played an LP by Judy as well as an album by Mary to an American lady who couldn't tell any difference between their voices but I can!!
Really beautiful! I love hearing alternate versions... That is really how music lives. I heard that Rachael Yamagata recorded this track as well. It's defiantly worth a listen.
At the time everyone I knew who'd heard her sing said it was without doubt *the* best rendition they'd heard... and to me it is still the best.
Her voice had such a clear tone and her delivery is so confident and vibrant that even within sound quality this bad she still sings like an angel. Almost in tears.
She was just 20 then and I so wish she'd not gone off to get married and all bar abandoned her pop career.
For me tho, her best song tho is still "Goodbye". Pure magic.
Wow, what a tribute to the super duper talented Mary Hopkin that even with the such poor sound quality of this video, that her voice still sounds so angelically beautiful.
I naturally think Joni Mitchell's version of this song is definitive --BUT whenever Mary even goes NEAR a beautiful song, she makes it her own--she never stops being magic to me--back then AND now:-)
Have to admit that close second on 'Recollections' for me is the lovely 'Quiet Moments'. Just love the backing vocals. Also I do like Mary's version of 'Pefect Love'. My fave tracks from 'Valentine' are 'Sometimes It's Not Enough' and 'Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth'. I remember Mary's angelic vocals on Tom Paxton's 'Peace Will Come' (which I once sang with my sister) and 'What A Friend You Are'. Lovely memories Take care Phil
I believe that Sam Brown wrote the lyrics for 'The Sun Will Shine Again'. Certainly my World is getting brighter with the news of the lovely MARY HOPKIN new CD. I have been playing 'Valentine' and 'Recollections' all day in my car and have gone MARY CRAZY again. God created a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. 'Another Day' has become one of my favourites. Take care Phil
'Recollections' has rarely been off my player, I love 'Another Day', in fact on this one I cannot really pick one particlular song, but I think "a leaf must fall" is probabably my fave!
A leaf must fall my fave too Rich, Clive Palmer did a great job writing that one! Mary knew exactly how to sing it too, its fantastic! Please post it so we can compare Jill and Mary's voices :)
Yes I agree I would love hear Mary sing 'The Winner Takes It All' too. Also there is a beautiful song which Frida recorded with Jon Lord recently called 'The Sun Will Shine Again'. This song would really suit Mary's voice. Infact wouldn't it be a great idea to team the great songwriting team of Bjorn and Benny with the superb vocal talents of the one and only MARY HOPKIN ? Peace and love I send to you and all of Mary's loyal fans.
Did you know that in October 12th 1990Mary appeared in a Charity Concert to Save The Regal Cinema in Henely on Thames it was held at the Kenton Theatre in Henley she was part of a 'Super Group' calling themselves the "Thames Valley Gang" which included
Joe and Vicki Brown, Mick Ralphs, Jon Lord, Ian Paice and Barrie Barlow.
This really is a beautiful version of one of the most wonderful songs ever. I would love to hear Mary record this song on a future album. How about a new CD of Mary's cover versions. Love to hear 'You've Got A Friend' 'Somedays Are Diamonds' 'Forever Young' 'Sounds of Silence' and i'm sure Mary would do justice to 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and ABBA's 'The Way Old Friends Do'. Mary Hopkin has been blessed with an amazing voice.
Mary Hopkin was/is a very gifted singer. I remember the day her first album was released and I bought it in a record store. I had NO idea who she was, only that she recorded on Apple so I was curious. Boy, was I surprised when I heard her unique and beautiful voice fill my bedroom.I suspect she will be remembered and listened to long after the current crop of pop singers have faded away. Listening to her takes me back to a beautiful time when pop singers could actually sing.
Thankyou pat for posting this.I cant make up my mind as to the best version. This seems to have a more mature edge than the version of mary's on festival hall cd
This song was released on Joni Mitchells "Clouds" in 1969 and I heard Mary sing it on a TV show I think it was 1970 and introduced it as "Clouds" not "Both Sides now" I think "Goodbye" would have been already selected by then as a release but who knows.
I much prefer Mary's version to Judy Collins though. Have you ever heard Anne Murray sing this, she does a lovely version of the song
They sang this at an Oh Canada Eh! dinner show in Niagara Falls and I cried my eyes out!

Joni Mitchell wrote this and does her own very earthy version of it. I have grown to like it better than Judy's. Mary's is also very good. Love it.

Do sounds like Judy Collins a lot... i wasn't sure either until I heard she sing "at all", haha. Absolutely Mary, and it's better than Judy's.

You can almost hear Mary Hopkin's British (actually Welsh) accent if you listen closely, but of course Judy Collins is American.
