It's a good start. I learned all that explained here, and more just by reading the manual. The most important thing I found was setting the white balance, if you get this right, then the rest shouldn't be too hard.

I think the switch to the left of the viewfinder is the eyepiece shutter lever and you dont have to "put a blocker on" to take a timed exposure.
