Actually, even new cars do not necessarily have the technology that makes the window reverse direction when it comes in contact with an obstruction. And on many vehicles the auto reverse is only on the FRONT windows and only in the "express" or one-touch mode. To test your windows, you can take a water bottle and try to roll the window up with it obstructing the way. Hint: If it's a sports top bottle, don't point it toward you... I found out the hard way! :-)
Most cars wont allow you to opperate the windows without the keys in the ignition, so take the keys out, and that can't happen. Heat stoke and hypothermia are bigger issues with kids and cars.

That's always a good point; do not leave children unattended in a car, particularly if the keys are still in the ignition.
