  • Such a poignant song for all times! Great track with Chaka singing and the musicians capturing the sound of Motown. My idol, Jaco Pastorius, tipped his hat to James Jamerson as an influence on his style.

  • I like the the announcer's voice in the beginning.

  • This is an amazing moment in the documentary, Standing in the Shadows of Motown. The Funk Brothers sound exactly like they did on the record(s)... they are incomparable. See this film on Google videos if you're a Motown fan. It will enlighten and thrill you!

  • This is the most informative music documentary I've ever watched. I highly recommend it!

  • Too Cool. and of course the 'message' there. Deal me in. I'm with you.

  • The song that was playing during the intro was a vamp of Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

  • WOW :))

  • What was the song at the beginning?

  • @skatermgee Since I Lost My Baby, from the 1965 album The Temptin' Temptations

  • when Chaka was at her best, I always loved the way she phrased her 'r's' in a way so very intentional and made her lyrics heavy...

  • Great video - let's not forget!

  • Standing in the Shadows of Motown waas the first movie I ever saw that the entire audience applauded and did not leave until the credits stopped rolling. Beautiful experience!! Don't miss it!

  • Chaka and The Funks amazing version of What's Goin' On won a well-deserved Gramamy that year!!

  • wonderfull intro and wonderfull song one of hers best performance

  • Chaka killed it. Love how she styled her vocals on this.

  • god I love her..........amazing

  • @daraandfrank And Marvin's smiling! What if this was a duet with Marvin, Chaka and musical backing by ....... Quincy Jones? Right-on!!!!!!!

  • @4s2work Marvin wanted to work with Quincy, and the feeling was mutual. Quincy once said that his biggest regret in music is never having worked with Marvin. Although he did a nice cover of 'What's Going On' on his 'Smackwater Jack' album in the early 70's.

  • A fantastic cover..the funk brothers made it sound so tight and fresh and Chaka did it in her own chakaresque.. funky way. A excellent version

  • The Ultimate Classic!!!

  • this is simply brilliant....can't find any better words

  • Yes, the king of music. The Funk Brothers are brilliant masters. Best of the Best !!!

  • words fail me

  • I am speechless that is a first great great...........

  • This intro gave me goosebumps.

  • What's Going On is my all time favorite album. Nobody does it as good as Marvin but give Chaka her due, she does blow it up! Marvin would be proud!!

  • What's Going On is my all time favorite album. Nobody does it as good as Marvin but Chaka does blow it up!

  • ok but marvin did it best

  • amazing

  • 1:17 "The greatest bass player of all time Jam.........Jaco Pastorius!"

  • Anyone who votes down on this should not have access to a computer or the internet!!

  • People have no idea what this music meant to the the US during the 60's, 70's and in to the 80's. this was music played in your home and you watched your parents sance to thsi music. how many young people today even see their parents hold hands much less listen to music and dance together. This music was a vehicle for families to communicate. That is missed today.

  • Imagine performing this song with the men who actually recorded it all those years ago with Marvin Gaye, the fathers of Mowtown themselves! I love Chaka Khan and everyone else that performed on this DVD and think that their music is awesome but compared with the greatness of these musical pioneers they're just young players.

  • it seems that the days of real music has gone out of the window

  • Love this!

  • OMFG

  • This had to be Chaka's greatest performance. I remember watching this years ago, it was when I became a Chaka fan.

If I remember correctly she won an award for this.

  • @twinqletwinqle This was a grammy winning performance. You are correct.

  • I WILL create a timemachine that enables me to go back in time. So if someone can help please do :)

  • like a cool breeze on a hot day...smooth as silk.....just chills....very cool !!

  • Maybe the coolest intro I ever saw... acknowledging the departed, as well as the present...

  • I'm not really into her interpretation, it's okay, but I heard Aretha do this once, and it ruined it for me from anyone else.

  • What is the name of the first two songs?

  • @hemyking The first one is Since I Lost My Baby. The second sounds like the opening bars of Ain't No Mountain High Enough,

  • This will always be Marvin Gaye's masterpiece!! His retort to the MAN who still keeps us all in "place". WE do the work...WE pay the taxes...WE fight the wars...WE die broken and torn. This song is about us...the Middle Class and the Poverty-Ridden soldiers of our society. But, on a brighter note, if someone else was ever gonna sing this song and bring the same message with such talent and beauty...CHAKA BABY!!

  • I own the DVD and it's fantastic! All I ever wanted to be was Funk Brother. One of the greatest bands in the world! I grew up on Motown and pretty much have the sound of Motown flowing through my veins and I feel lucky as hell to be able to say that. Peace.

  • Every morning when i go on job, first song in my playlist is Chaka Khan - What's Going On,than Michael McDonald-What's going on and Marvin Geye-What's going on. :)

  • Her voice is so smooth. What struck me the first time I saw the video is how effortless her singing is, even when she is scatting. The Funk Brothers - they had it going like no other group of musicians I can think of. Thanks Motown for all the great music.

  • popawolf - so, so true. This is music heaven, sheer perfection!

  • Don't complain brothers, make it yourselves.

This book and movie inspired a whole new generation of future greats.

  • iluvher...

  • un-fucking-believable.

  • Hey, that's Tom Scott on Soprano Sax!

  • Rare to hear Chaka scat like Ella.

    What a treat.

  • Great song man! you messed it up with the homer intro though!

  • Real Music Ain't no secret!

  • The funk bros.....the best ever. proven schooled musicians with the feel of soul, jazz, and blues......the best

  • she dont have 10 grammys for nothin & alot of them are for live performances

  • @M1SSB3LL18 and that was before they were handed out like popcorn.

  • Hey, I'm definitely not knocking it - that vocal performance was awesome. I've listened to it about 10 times now. I'm just not very familiar with her or that scooby/dooby/doo-wap jazz stuff. She's basically treating her voice as an instrument and creating sans lyrics. Super cool.

  • Marvin was right, war is not the answer... Crazy emotional feelings in this song... The Funk Brothers is the highest point in music history... So sade to hear the shit music of our times... Love you Motown...

  • Eddie Willis , Joe Messina and Bob Babbitt: Great musicians! I enjoyed them playing with Phil Collins in "Going Back" CD & DVD....Go on boys!!!!

  • WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP!

  • COSMIC CLASS :)THANK YOU :) NAMASTE

  • 14 people don't know whats going on :-P

  • BRAVO

  • I had no idea she could sing like that - just remember her from those 80s pop songs. The band sounds great - Awesome!

  • @pjthib - SAY WHAT??????? You'd better do your homework on Ms. Khan. She started singing funk in the 70's with Rufus. And she's a great jazz singer. You'd better recognize!

  • 2 words...Just Class!!!

  • what the fuck with with homer man... you fucking ruin it

  • This is one fantastic documentary..I highly recommend it!! 10/10

  • The documentary is called "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" - it's the story of The Funk Brothers...

  • Can anybody tell me what documentary this piece is associated with? Thank you!

  • @GirlEmerald - It's from a documentary entitled "Standing in the Shadows of Motown'...highly recommend it.

  • Funk Brothers never die!

  • Hey! Can somebody what this song on the beginning of this video? Please help me! MOTOWN 4 EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • actually i think she would be disturbed by the whole conversation.

  • Tausend Dank, ihr Lieben ...

Pistol Allan, halt ´nen Platz für mich da oben frei.

  • 1:45 - 1:48 Herman Simpson WTF

  • I'm only 18...but..this time..this music... seemed...feels so much better...fell in love with the bass because of james jamerson. man i party to the hits of today but...the feeling... the emotion in this early american music..far surpasses any club banger or radio hit pop music today has to offer.

  • Just saw this documentary tonight, loved every minute of it!!

  • My God, what a moment !!!!!!! :)

  • These guys were one of a kind...every time a learn one of them is gone, it touches my heart deeply and dearly...

  • Chaka is the greatest vocalist!

  • @MrJayDC Britney Spears shits over Chaka khans vocals. Open your ears deaf boy & get some fucking taste!! Obviously you have no fucking idea about music.

  • I cried watching this video, knowing most of these wonderful musicians shown here are now dead too, like the ones they presnted at the beginning.

  • LUV U CK...

  • @jamesbach54 Britney Spears shits over Chaka khans vocals. Open your ears deaf boy & get some fucking taste!! Obviously you have no fucking idea about music.

  • Maybe the coolest intro ever...

I love this movie... what a privilege to see the surviving members of the greatest house rhythm section of all time work...

  • chaka is beautiful!

  • @AmazingAmazig19 not as beautiful as Britney idiot.

  • la classsssse

  • so, this was a pretty emotional clip for me. i was blessed to have johnny griffeth as a teacher in high school and i got to play with joe messina as a young player just getting started. i really had no idea until much later in life the magnitude of players that i was surrounded by, the education i was receiving without knowing it and the sheer joy that this group of individuals brought to so many people...musicians or not!

  • That was indeed a treat. Thank you for posting.

  • Wow! Wow! Wow! I'm speechless. Bravo!!!!!! Heaven must be like this!

  • They played on more hits, and sold more records than in the history of the World! And hardly anyone even knew their names. What an absloute tradgedy. They were, and are amazing an inspirational. Nobody ever said anything in this life was fair..I just pray that they somehow get their due..They molded history.

  • great music! the sound of motown never die!

  • James Jamerson was the Jimi Hendrix of bass, may he rest in peace.

  • Until the PBS special I never knew the debt of their legacy. Let's support PBS and others who put this kind of wonderful history out there...Thanks for the post. By the way I bought the dvd and it is a great to have on in the background while company is over. It can lead to a great conversation. Enjoy.

  • this is an awesome performance i toally recommend the movie standing in the shadows of omtown

  • I love you, Chaka!

  • AWESOME AND CONNECTED

  • The most cool band! thanks for FUNK! go to you OUR Honest Tribute!

    much respect!

  • I hope heaven is this...

  • What's Going On (Marvin Gaye) + Chaka Khan = SUPERLATIVE!!!

  • I like it better than the original! once again chaka put her mark on it!

  • aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!chaka-khan rools!!!!

  • I love the funk bros...but...did this cross anyone's minds? cuz it really gets me. These guys are playin these songs for the last 40 years. Why do they still need to read charts? They are all glued to the music like if its the first time thier playing it. WHY?????

  • @dante773 That's a way of concentrating.. you focus on something while your ears and body are working .. it's better than closing your eyes in front of the public.

  • @dante773....Well, they're older and they haven't played those song consistently like back in the day. Plus those song we well written and arranged for elite singers, so you want it to be right. Real musicians read music so that they can get and keep gigs.

  • Excellent, well done!

  • DAAMMMNN I love you Chaka.

  • top of art

  • funky nice ! ですね.

  • Chaka should travel to all jazz schools to demo skat!! What a voice!

  • As Kenny Gamble would say--there is a message in the music with "What's Goin' On."

  • we will never again know or hear REAL music like this from REAL MUSICIANS WHO LOVED THEIR ART..it's gone forever like a 1959 CADILLAC COUPE DE VILLE

  • @POPAWOLF my only answer is SADE(look her up on youtube)

  • @POPAWOLF I am longing more the the '80s Elektric Band, Ferrari Testarossa, Sergio Tacchini, etc... All gone...

  • @POPAWOLF Your the same nostalgic as me... The good times are gone... we live the bad times... so sade...

  • @POPAWOLF They are out there.......

  • @POPAWOLF if we support those who or actually making REAl music this we will but we don't lets support them

  • @POPAWOLF That's really narrow.

  • THE FUNK BROTHERS!!!!!!!!!! There would not have been a Motown as great as it was without them. That's real!

  • Wish I could have been there that night. This performance is phenomenal, and it wasn't even the best of the night.

.Chaka Khan rules, and so do The Funk Brothers.

  • Kniet nieder, die Funk Brothers perform magic.

    Tight.

  • The greats...all under one roof.

  • Watch how "Pistol" Allen (the drummer in the cap) is enjoying this! Feelin' every bit of it! Feelin' good! That's the way I feel when I watch this.

  • masterpiece

  • chaka you are so sweet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love Chaka Khan, she does not get her due as one of the greatest singers.

  • masterful

  • The Funk Brothers & What's Going On is one of those pieces of music that you never get tired of listening to. So I just want to thank the legendary Funk Brothers for giving us some of the best sounds from Detroit.

  • Some of the greatest musicians ever !!!

  • OH MAN !! What have they Not done. They backed Funked all most every group. Who is lying ? ? To You !! Give it up to these Guys even now that they are old. They Made the music u listen to TODAY !! They Paved the Way . THE FUNK BROS. !!! !!!

  • I never get tired of listening to this what a lift it gives me I love all music but this gives me a big hug : )

  • True that, man.

  • kissing and making up is good

  • What a voice! What a woman! She added to this great music a delightful sensuality.

  • you know you heard a number of so called "jazz" singers, i wont name names (krall) and they are supposed to take the melody and be creative with it, chaka khan is on the true queens of funk and r&B, but she also knows how to give jazz a solid spanking as well.

  • this is f*cking amazing. goose pimples.

  • Beyonce who? chaka's the best

  • @atisman1964 Exactly. She SHITS over her and her boring music.

  • This is beyond phenomenal...the true musical fathers of an era that will never be repeated, yet is the foundation of all we hold dear in music. Chaka Khan is the epitome of female vocal musicianship in the world. Thank you for posting this rarity.

  • she is amazing singer love her

  • can u sing like this.

  • @XanBcoo You deserve the electric chair for that comment. Actually, she would slap you down herself and whip you! How dare you!! Evil person! Offspring of SATAN. If you fuck with Chaka, you fuck with me bitch! Game on MOLE!!!

  • cool; the most beautiful funky rhythm

  • LAWL 4:44!!

  • Some of you are missing the point. The Funk Brothers were the unsung heros behind every Motown hit you ever heard. The video, "Standing In the Shadows of Mowtown"--should you care to listen/watch--will explain.

  • you must put down the crack pipe and step away from the window and computer before it's too late...

  • Blabla..blur

  • Khan was JAMIN!!!

  • That was some awsome music way back when I miss those years

  • My favorite music DVD.....

  • The introductions that paid hommage to the late members was the classiest! And the hook to "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" really had me feeling some kind of awesome way!

  • she is one of the all-time greats if not the greatest female singer/performer ever to grace us

  • hardly the greatest...she's excellent, but there's always Aretha

  • Ok I pretty much just got welled right up when they showed James Jamersons picture and and broke into tune all together. RIP in James you set the standards that will never be forgotten. Bass lines from Heaven man.. Long Live James! And all the FUNK BROS! You are not forgotten!

  • ya don,t beat this, lar

  • I could have done without the simpsons crap, though maybe that was inserted so you wouldn't get sued/pulled down -anyway - THANK YOU!!

  • OH MY GOSh - an airliner could crash into my goosebumps right now!!!!

This was THE sound of my later youth - LONG LIVE SOUL music!!

I love how the inaugural dance was danced to Etta James singing 'AT LAST'!!!!!!!

Thank you and much respect for the upload.

  • My hair stands up and tears come to my ears when I see and listen to this. It doesn't get any better than this. I am in awe of Jamerson's basslines. Thank you Bob, Chaka. I want this played at my funeral if I can afford one.

  • That gurl ain't nevuh sang a sour note in her life! Whew ... just too, too funky from out da gate. Go hed Mizz Lady!

  • Chaka's given name is Yvette Stevens

  • only love can conquer hate....we got to find a way....oh Marvin!!

  • Absolutely superb performance from all the great musicians and of course Chaka, fabulous interpretation of a great classic..

The Funk Brothers never really got the true credit for what they did back in the day, that makes me sad. Remember what it was like in the 60s when we first heard Motown in the UK, such an exiting time.

  • I like how she put in her own kind of spin/rendition of this song rather than
