  • There are 4 ways to adapt muscle:

    -size

    -endurance (what he meant by "toning," except it doesn't mean look better, you do need cardio/diet for that like bossman said, it means the muscle adapts in such a way as to contract for longer periods (and it does need more reps and less sets (12-15 reps etc.)

    -strength

    -and power

    Sure, you are going to get the whole package when you train, but you will get the most out of ONE of those attributes following the CORRECT and specific guidelines for it.

  • "Tone up", what is that? A muscle can only do one thing when confronted with weight lifting, and that is growing bigger and stronger. The quickest way to look like you've packed on 20 lbs of muscle is to drop 10 lbs of fat.

  • @anglicantian I agree , muscle only grows one way doesnt matter how much you lift or how many reps you do. No such thing as " tone up " wieght training. The only way to tone up if thats what you want to call it is diet and cardio

  • @Vibrantvibeman thats a common weightlifting myth. You cant burn fat off a specific part of a body. The only way you lose fat is losing it over all areas of the body at the same rate. Higher reps is not necessarily better at burning fat than low reps high rate. They only way you lose fat is by burning the calories.

  • Good tips. However, I like to do the raises all the way up over my head. The reason is I could also work some of the traps while working the front deltoids. I don't think it hits your biceps that much like this guy says.

  • @2cool4u24 it doesnt and you are right it hits your traps, but this is an isolation movement thats why you only go up as high as eye level

  • for size does he mean heavier weight 6-10 reps and tone leight weight 12-15 reps? or leight weight for mass to?

  • He means that if you want muscle mass, then you would use more weights with lower reps. e.i. 25lbs - 3 sets of 6-10 reps. If you want to get just toned then you would use a lighter weight but more reps. so 10-15lbs - 3 sets of 20 to 25 reps. Of course the amount of reps and weight varies for each person.

  • heavy weight low reps for size

    low weight high reps for tone

  • you're still working your front delt, but if you go higher than shoulder level you will activate your trap
