I glued up my trident lock so it won't activate. My guess is they put it there so when you use it closed to cut fishing line or a seat belt, it wouldn't open up on you.
@orcaluv If you take the scales off your trident you can remove the safety all together. Thats what I did. I did that with my Flash 1 and Kershaw leek as well

the original clips will fit in the same wholes as the split arrow screws will so you can just ask benchmade for a couple extra clips and replace em
