Duty...that was why she was in the hall...duty. Duty held Eowyn long when darkness and despair would have long taken and destroyed her. She was there to tend the hall herself, personally...keeping the darkness that assailed her heart at bay by keeping busy with the care of Theoden's Hall. Think of how she cared for so many during all her time in the movies and books. She tended to things personally out of duty...for she felt she had nothing left.
@tomciow2 First of all Aragorn didn't choose Arwen over Eowyn. He was always in love with Arwen. He never thought about Eowyn in a romantic way. Arwen is much better and beautiful.
Eowyn could be happy she got such a good man(Faramir).
@loveatrej I agree Aragorn should stay with Arwen and Éowyn with Faramir. But never will Arwen be better that Éowyn. Actually, Arwen is barely mentioned in the books. And don't talk about beauty, that's completely irrelevant to who's better than who.
@tomciow2 Eowyn's cooler than Arwen, yes... But Aragorn was already in love with Arwen before he met Éowyn. Besides, Eowyn wasn't really in love with Aragorn: she was in love with an idea, she loved what she could have been with him. Faramir was the perfect choice for her, she loved him, not his titles.
@Nikifuj908 she didn't sound right when she sang only because her voice was raw from crying. yours would be too, if your cousin had just died and you had to sing at his funeral.
@AronofskysKumo yeah, you're probably right, but the thing is that ROTK has a severe length problem. I don't mind watching a good movie that's well over 3 hours, but ROTK just drags...
This scene should have been with Faramir and Éowyn. I don't know how or if this scene is in the book, but if Éowyn and Faramir end up together it would just make more sense. Hoom.
Well it's the golden hall of Edoras, it is the Kings hall, so it's not exactly open to the public. Besides I think it'd be a bit creepy if she woke up to see him tending a fire in her own room
Didn't they have a celebration in this very hall the night before ? Maybe Eowyn was too drunk to make it back to her boudoir and just collapsed on the first available couch ? ;-)
@Junamami Maybe, but they were under siege, so she fell asleep in the great hall, kind of like passing out on the living room couch when you're trying to stay up for someone who is not home yet.
Which would make more sense if there were actually warriors away fighting a battle somewhere... but here everybody's in the castle, so who is she waiting for ?
It's too bad though, because it is quite a nice scene but I find the whole setting a bit contrived
To wait for Aragorn. No, just kidding. The rooms are all occupied by fighting men. She, being the shieldmaiden, can't very well sleep in the same room as them.
@sugarmouseable Lent her room to the children, I suppose? But again, as you said, this is the king's hall. Surely they would have many rooms/give the children other caretakers...
"I dreamed I saw a great wave, climbing over green lands and above the hills. I stood upon the brink; it was utterly dark in the abyss before my feet. A light shone behind me but I could not turn. I could only stand there... waiting"
WOW GREAT LINES. This was an actual recurrent dream that Tolkien himself had and that in the books its given to Faramir.

Eowyn ends up falling in love with Faramir and he falls in love with her..but how in the hell does Eowyn keep scoring with all these good looking men?! dhhhr! I don't think she's all that!
She is one hell of a hot and sexy babe. Maybe she cast let her noble manners aside for a few hours and explain to Aragorn freely that he wants him... ;)
The darkend abyss need not call you Eowyn... you are too fair to lose your freedom to such a wave... you brave soul though fictitiouse.... you are a wonderfull woman
I personaly think this scene is important in the film because it starts to show the connection between Ewoyn & Aragorn and that Aragorn is falling for Ewoyn and slowly forgetting about Arwen.
Aragorn never fell for Eowyn; his heart always belonged to the one he promised it to in 2980 (according to Appendix B). He felt she had an immense strength that would affect the fate of the peoples of Middle-Earth which is why he cared for her; he saw they were both alike: wanderers afraid of failure and captivity. But he gave his ring and heart to Arwen. it's in the book. ;)
Aragorn born March 1st, in the Third Age: 2931. Eowyn born same Age: 2995. So he is 64 years older than her. BTW, today is March 1st. so HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARAGORN!
yea, i remember someone being 200 too. but i cannot recall who it was... ;) most likely an elf. or a dwarf. that is all it could be since Gandalf is probably "300 lives of men"-old, and the hobbits are in their fifties...
Like I said, he says in the film that he is "300 lives of men" and since men live to be around 80, 300×80=24000, so that is his minimum age in LOTR. I'll second that. Tolkien himself never wanted a movie, people, so chew on that. Eowyn's still a rather good, complex and thick character in the book..she only likes Aragorn because of what he personifies: A warrior-king, glory and honour on the battlefield. And could we please have some respect to Tolkien here, some decent command of English would do nicely.
