  • Mel Lewis band also played that night. Maynard write to me to tell me that the painting was hanging on his wall. What a class act!

  • (Cont'd) 1972 I had just finished a portrait of him and Igave it to him that night. Cannonball Adderley's quintet & the Thad Jones

  • This brings back so many memories. The 1st time I saw Maynard was in '72

  • From the arrangement, to the performance, to the camera direction and 'special effects' (..and - is that a young Randy Jones on drums??), this is KILLIN'!

This also sounds like the same band that recorded the studio version..which I'd love to find.

    Great stuff...

  • What can ya' say, this band smoked as well as MF. One of my favorite tunes on that album. The whole album smokes. Always loved Maynard and the way he would intimidate the horn players that sucked on the dang things instead of playing from the ankles up. They know who they are, the ones that always criticize MF, just jealous folks. RIP MF, your music and energy live on!

  • he hit that high D better than on MF Horn 1....very nice!

  • Rest in peace, Danny.

  • That looks like an alto sax, not a tenor.

  • what in the world? this in neither the el dopa nor the maynard i was expecting. if i liked this kind of jam this would be good though.

  • pete king stole the show . sorry dan

  • L-DOPA*

  • That's a hell of a performance by Maynard and by his British band from the early 70's. It's great to see Peter King and Danny Moss soloing in this video. I love the sound of the band too. Just incredible! Best regards from Puerto Rico.

  • Nice solo from altoist Peter King also. . . .

  • Whoa! The solo by Danny Moss sounds very familiar. If you've listened to Steve Marcus soloing on the second movement of Channel One Suite, he sounds very similar to what Danny Moss did here.

  • groovy!!!!!!!!!!1 what does ldopa do for anyone

  • Your Maynard vids are very cool. Thanks for sharing them with us. Really cool, and brings back a lot of memories when I got all my high school band-ites interested in Maynard, back in 1970.

  • Is that a CONN 10M Danny Moss is playing?

  • I'll ask him! I think it might be a Conn.

  • Is that Pete King on alto?

  • Yes!

  • That is the BEST Maynard clip on YouTube. Thanks so much, it's made my week!

  • Thanks for your kind remarks. I will pass your comment on to Danny who features in the clip with Maynard.

  • Maynard was using his Crest White Strips prior to taping.

  • I love how the trumpet section is sitting in those retro chairs leaning back like it ain't no thang. Probably too high to stand up for an extended period of time without the stage spinning. Gotta love the lighting effects!

  • In my humble opinion, this came off of Maynard's best album. It had everything!

  • damn right. I still listen/scream along to the Lp at least once a week!

  • It's Pete King on alto..still going strong today!!

  • OMG! This is from MF's best album MF horn. Please tell me that you have Eli's Comin', Chala Nata and Ballad for Max!!!??? Alan Downey is Lead tpt on this (he wrote Give it one). He sadly died just before Maynard.

  • Oh WORD? I never Alan (the trumpet player) would pass just soon before Maynard. I seen him one time on a taped concert with the Bob Wilbur Big Band doing a Ellington Tribute in Europe.

  • Awesome song. The TV special sure hacked it compared to the copy recorded on MF Horn (I guess to make it fit within the time alloted for the TV show, omiting certain sections and reducing solo time, particularly Pete Jackson's very cool piano solo). Cool Hippie Freak-out effects at the end...

  • @wolfe1687

I enjoyed Maynard's band many times at the MSG Club in Manchester, great days.

  • Sure... No connection with his career and he music.

  • GozTheGreat, you sure mean it.

  • Who the hell cares about what kind of drugs he did? Look what his music gave us. This was a different era than we live in now. Long live Maynard!!!! This is one of my top favorite Maynard songs! Gotta love it!

  • Great.... Good jazz for all men (no LSD, please).

Maynard interest for LSD, for Tim Leary and the dubious guru Sathya Sai Baba are strange aspects of his personality.

  • Your too smart for me. That was a short time period of Maynard's life that certainly does NOT umbrella him or his entire career.
