Pop or underground. Good was/is good. Christ, it was just good to hear a variety of tunes rather than the conservative selections and styles of the 90's. For a year or two there, it was all good as they say. The term crossover died in the 90's as the whole musical underground crossed over to the mainstream. I could go on....
It was indeed played at all the raves in 89. Yes it charted, but thats what the underground has and always will be about. Its where you here something new first. You may not remember hearing it at the raves but lets face it, 10 hours, E's, and around 500 tunes later your not going to are ya!
I was a pirate radio dj in 89, and the MOST asked for song that we got on the pager was this tune! ENERGY - BIOLOGY - SUNRISE - BACK TO THE FUTURE - GENESIS....ALL OF THESE RAVES HAD THIS TUNE IN THE PLAYLISTS. Grooverider,Fabio,Jumping Jack Frost,Ellis D, Kenny Ken, Kid Batchelor, all of these were the TOP DJ,S at the time and ALL of them played it! make no mistake!
why out all the mental tune you could pick black box which was never played at ant of the raves i went to the most comercial tune of that era an insult to the rave culture you nut nut lol
Once again completely wrong . Ride On Time was played everywhere in '89, garunteed. The sampling and beats were unheard of then....then it rode on the rave explosion to overexposed success . There is even live footage from Rave '89 vid which has the track playing live at Energy Effingham Search it out and learn
Not only was it played at most 89 raves ( before it became a chart hit natch) but it was a particular favourite of the crowd. You are completely mistaken .
I seriously dislike people rewriting history to suit today's tastes .
Check out the KLF Rapido interview. Drummond said . ' Ride On Time for us was as far as you could go ,you couldn't go further up than Ride On Time , a peak of the whole Rave thing I know it crossed over and became just another pop record , but that initial burst ' Mate ,Italian (piano led) House was a major style in '89 and onwards .I'm doubting you were there ?? . Everything you've said about the track is now shown to be completely false .
Yeh , but be4 Ride On Time was a chart hit it was a centrepiece of the '89 raves . Its House/sampled vocals/beats sound was considered underground . This was be4 these techniques became standard fare remember . Also remember the early raves had a wide variety of music , electro to soul . The splintering of the movement into smaller and smaller factions (all sneering at each other) was still ahead .
Gets my jaw clenching, top memories.

I remember those days :-) The waiting by phone boxes for the address of another phonebox. Or going in convoy to confuse the police, lol.

Thank you for using the term conservative. Dance music has been VERY conservative since the mid nineties.
