  • the locks sounded sooo tasty :)

  • 1:03 Dumbledore

  • If all these people had a YOUTUBE channel they would be making the dough.

  • Am I the only one who has an feeling of emptiness? It's when you kind of feel sad and melancholic and you are smiling on top of it all at the same time...

Great video!congrats! stirred up a weird emotion though. But great nevertheless!

    And clicking subscribe.

  • 0:57 it looks like he is about to fall backwards into the tracks... didn't know what way to decide should happen...

  • such a musical city ahhh i miss new york....

  • Those fish were still alive :O

NY looks like an awesome and lively conurbation.

  • the kora is bad ass

  • how manypeople give them money to STOP playing?

  • Noone even acknowledges that these people are there..... even if I saw them everyday I'd still enjoy the shows.

  • I've seen almost all of those subway musicians :)

  • this video is genius!

  • ...and this was just one subway ride, hehe

  • The subways will never fail you for some sort of entertainment lol Rather it be musical or just some crazy person begging for money.

  • u did a great job with this vid, i follow u for that on twitter :D

btw. that guy around 1:00 is cool :)

  • I love my city.

  • Fresh fish!

  • As I was beginning to dislike NY and wanna move out of here. You made me love it and wanna move to the city.

  • @pahaggs89 Victory.

  • DUMBLEDORE WEARS A FANNY PACK! 1:04

  • cool- more vidz like this this would be good .cheers Joe ...

    peace*

  • there are some sounds that are not in your vid. like gun shots, ice cream truck and the many diff. languages that you hear just walking around... lol.. cheers..

  • the hole world in a town asia amerika afrika everybody every culture

  • thats fucking weird.. half of those ppl asking 4 money sucker u in making u think there so poor but there not they just want some easy money

  • @mikeb2898 They're not begging, they're busking. You should pay based on whether you like the music. I definitely don't give to the guys who suck.

It is true that some outright beggars who are charismatic, sympathetic, or diligent make a middle-class living or better. My personal rule for beggars is to give exclusively to anyone who looks like they're over 60, and not worry too much about their personal lives. If you've made it that far I'm not going to judge you.

  • @JoeFelice true but my point still stands right ive been 2 new york once and these 2 ppl are asking 4 money pretending that there house burnt down but just by looking at 'em i knew they were lieing

  • @mikeb2898 wtf is ur prob. some people lay on the streets with thier hands out. thats begging for money. but there are people who work for it like singing or playing music for that money. theyre earning it, not just sitting on their ass. and its not easy getting a job and its horrible t have no money. if u were starving, u wud do it too. and if not, then youde be a damn fool for letting urself starve by putting zero effort.

  • true.. i hear this shit every day

gosh, those mariachi brothas get arouunnnd.

  • Wow. I hope I get to see some of these performers when I fly out to NY next week! Nothing beats a good busker.

  • I loved this video. NYC is so different than what I'm use to. Seems pretty scary.

  • what was the second guy playing that was sweet!!

  • @jewsepy That's a kora, a West African instrument made from a calabash gourd. There are more kora videos on YouTube.

  • this is one of the most uniquely beautiful portraits of life in New York, well done as always Joe

  • Is this all in one day?

  • You know what ?

To hell with Boston, I'm applying to a college in New York.

Not really, but I think New York just brought me to life again.

  • Haha beautiful!

  • Looooser!! head off to mexico baby, NYC is MY city..

  • awesome

  • Man I miss New York. Would love to move there one day.

  • wow this really makes me wanta go to nyc Xd

  • Loved this. So cool. I'll be visiting for the first time in late december. So excited.

  • Fantastic.

  • love the contrast of the percussion instruments in the subway and that of the marching band..

  • Go marching band w00t so gotta visit

  • who need mp3 players over there

  • I hate New York City. Los Feliz California is yummy though.

  • p.s never been to new york never forget 911 =[

  • I feel like I can smell the atmosphere so strange.

  • This is really fantastic. Nice eye, and ear. I like how you think.

    Thanx,

  • I was there a month ago and this guy played the piano in the subway...it was beautiful...I dont know how he got the piano down there though...:P I miss nyc!

  • 1:00 amazing!

  • Damnit I miss the east coast. You bitch...

Seriously, this whole west vibe bugs me--I remember why I left and why my residency option of UW and the easy UCSF were way effin behing UMass, Johns Hopkins, UNC, or... even crazy DC...

I need my east coast wonderment back... at least you totally "chose" your place. I was sort of in a stuck lil bind--San Fran was a wee too costly then (though in retrospect, I pay shitloads more for decent local, fresh food here, and you KNOW I need good food).<3

  • Wow, so many different people, different sounds, different spaces and life.

  • for such a nice camera it should have an anti-shake function..last 20secs made me sick

  • It's a Flip Mino, which is small and cheap with great sound and picture, but the zoom is terrible, and the shaking is amplified because it has no weight in your hand.

  • nice vid anyways for sure.

  • There is this Asian guy playing a saw (the tool) in the Canal St. station sometimes on the 6 platform and sometimes on the JMZ. It sounds like authentic Chinese, check him out next time you come to the city. nice video tho ^^

  • Hey joe is this at the 7/8/9 fest? Didn't see you there.

  • This video was shot throughout 2008, but yeah I was milling around the gathering on Thursday and Saturday.

  • :sigh: and that's why after only two weeks in ny i was glad to be back ---home sweet home...quiet florida. lol i must admit, though....some of them were pretty entertaining. =D

  • gotta love the drumline

  • wow that's amazing! lol :) Thanks for sharing

  • Did you just enter a teenage party and randomly started filming?

  • Mid 20's. I lived there last year. You can see it with the camera turned 90 degrees to the right in this video:

    watch?v=FXkt7fDX9k8

  • i wish i could go to new york to experience all that myself =) there are so many interesting people and sounds! lol.

    this is a nice video!!

  • This was an excellently clever idea :D But you forgot the acapella group usually on the R train who sell their own CDs :)

    Thanks for this! favorited ;D

  • where u at the 789 because it took place on 59 street

  • Yup

  • It would be so annoying to come back from work tired, and then find yourself trapped on a train with a mariachi band...

"guys do you mind?" ha ha

  • I'm not a mariachi fan either, but the acts that play on the trains change cars at every stop, so it's only a couple minutes. The greater hassle is when there's 20 7th graders screaming at each other and running around.

  • I'll take the mariachis over the teenage punks ANY DAY of the WEEK.

  • i really like this.

  • Really good, so much good music around and so little people around to appreciate.

  • joe i wanna see YOU!

    -pouts-

    this was cool though.

  • i dont think thats new york - i dont hear screaming for life mugging shooting innocent people blood on the corner and raping people on the train

  • Haha 72ve17, those stereotypes are funny, but have you been to New York?

As a 19 year old girl in New York City for the first time, I wandered around lost in the dark streets past midnight for a few hours by myself and never once felt worried.

I love the video. Though, the sound I remember most about New York is the ambulance siren.

  • I used the footage I had. Among sirens I think the mighty fire truck is the most memorable. It has a foghorn-like bark that'll split your eardrums.

  • depends where you were walking of course its a huge difference

  • that guy at 0:50 was cool

  • beautiful :)

    i miss new york!

  • I note the distinct absence of harmonicas and kazoos.

  • Great video, I had no idea they played instruments on the trains in New York now a days. Musicians are a granted on Indian trains.

Perhaps as a society ages its cultures and practices become more similar to that of the more established societies. A social evolution if you will... or maybe its instruments on the trains in New York .

  • Another great video! Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it.

  • This makes me feel like missing new york, even though I've never been there..

  • 3:13 i have raviolis

  • ahh somebody found the "raviolies"

  • Honestly, your the only youtuber that i get really excited for lol

  • floppy fish squishes! what a great perspective on your visit. cheers!

  • This type of video interests me the most, so much has been said about New York with such few words. A very different sort of video, I love it.

  • lol

  • At 1:00 my thought was ".....John Lennon? Is this where you've been all this time?!"

  • Ha! Interesting.

  • I will thank Rhett & Link every day of my life for finding you in New York! I'm a transplanted NYer now in Jacksonville, FL. I get very nostalgic and you made my day!

  • I'm glad it connected with you.

  • No car alarms?!

  • good point

  • spanish bands are awesome :) I liked 1:27 :D Awesome video!

  • I love this! great video.

  • Awesome video.

  • Y'know I cant remember ever seeing a street performer with bagpipes.

  • 5stars and great video.

  • I actually saw those spanish guys on the 7 train like two years ago when I was in NYC

  • this is great joe! it was great chillin with you this weekend we should do this more often. i wish u got a shot of me playing harmonica in the subway haha later man

  • Ваше здоровье

  • lookig forward 4 my trip 2 new york

  • nirvana love buzz!

  • ding!

  • very cool video joe!

lol @ that drunk chick 'waddya dooooin?"

  • Haha, yeah that was an odd and temporary living situation. They partied very hard.

  • very nice, i'm enjoying your videos very much

  • wow, definitely want to go to new york even more now. Btw you look exactly like one of my teachers :S

  • This is fantastic!

Btw it was great seeing you again :)

  • Thank you Denise, and likewise.

  • sheesh there is just constantly noise--

Lewis Black had a great joke about that...

  • Joe-- you are awesome.

  • Thank you sir; you are singular. Great seeing you.

  • the onlt time i have ever seen people perform publicly is at the airport, too bad cali doesnt have more of these. but then it can get a little annoying.

  • wow ive been all over the world in alot of cities and they always have to have people playing the buckets with drum sticks. i play drums so if i become a hobo in nyc i will prob do that. :P

  • You only posted a few videos from Caly, but you've been back in New York for only a couple of days and you've already posted two videos. You hate California don't you?

  • You're on to something with that. I don't hate it there, but i love it here.

  • Haha, talk about fresh fish. He bagged it while it was still moving!

  • the NYC subway system should have their own official band or orchestra, lol with the amount of performers we have underground

  • Great job

  • Yeah I live in NY its a fun place :P

  • LOL God I love the NYC Subway.

  • I love how you put this video together!

You expressed the cities true inner colors!

    Good Job!

  • I love that steel drum type thingy. ( Now watch it be called steel drum.)

  • It is called a steel drum! XD

  • It is indeed called a steel drum,we have 'em in my school.

also,NYC=10 bucks and a 40 minute train ride away.

  • yyyyup. but SF is a cool city too

  • There's only 1 NY though. Forget about it!

  • It's been so many years... thanks for bringing NY back to me.

  • very nice! nothing better than the crazy sounds of the street

  • cool, thanks for sharing! :)

  • interesting look at the big apple. I didn't know so much street performance would be available. Especially outside of central park.

  • So much music xD

  • joe make more videos!!

  • wonderful video

  • Why did you leave New York again?

  • family

  • Can't think of a better word than "delightful"

  • microcosm of sounds and the people associated with them. great concept video.

  • Thanks!

  • Your street performers are extravagant. In Chicago we just have a bunch of people with guitars, drums kids, saxophonists, and an occasional Caribbean steel drum

But our street preachers are a little more in your face

  • Yeah I've definitely seen more frequent and more aggressive preaching in San Francisco than NYC.

  • joe were you following me cause i saw most of those

  • Nice!

  • lol its cool you got all the music players together

  • The older this New Yorker gets, the less charming he finds the perpetual cacophony. But I still love NYC. Nice video.

  • I really enjoyed this. What a great way to capture the feeling of the place. Great

  • This is actually quite interesting. It's rare to get that kind of experience with various sounds all coming together in any place but a larger city.

  • cool meeting you in NYC.

  • looks like the lady in the subway is a bit annoyed that a trumped is being played right next to her ;)

  • A second later she whips out a buck and drops it in his cart.

  • that's one way to get rid of them ^_^

  • ...who?

  • Lady on the right at 0:25

  • I <3 NYC!
