This Traviata is tipically Bartoli!! An explosion of joy with a great voice. But I think that is the problem that I have with her! Everything shes sings is explosion of joy! But Traviata does not feel the way she's expressing here!
Bartoli knows she is not Violetta, not a soprano, but her version of the aria Sempre Libera, which she sings in recital and has recorded it; is really quite beautiful. She manages to make the aria appropriately bouncy, cheery and vibrant. She captures the spirit of the moment very well - Violetta giving herself to joy. It's really well sung, so don't give her a hard time just because she's a mezzo. It's only one aria and it's gorgeously sung
@AmericanEvita i agree indeed. It is diferent to sing certain arias in concert, or in this case just one aria with piano! it doesn´t matter if ít belongs to other voice repertoire if you can sing it well. It is well known that many sopranos sing the habanera from carmen in many recitals. Greatings
Ha ha ha, I loved the "Yes, you heard it right" on the description.
Thank you very very much for posting this video, I always believed that Cecilia would be able to sing Sempre Libera (I had heard her in the Brindisi), but I never thought she had already done it. Thank you very much.
@primohomme She is a soprano, has always been a soprano, she has a dark color to her voice, but she has always been able to sustain the tessitura and she has the high notes too. She has been cleverly marketed as a mezzo. This way, it is remarkable when she sings sempre libera without difficulty, or sings that E flat (high) from the Rossini.
I wouldn't really say she is a soprano really, her voice is special, like those of the divas of the bel canto era...such as Giuditta Pasta who sang roles with a mezzo/contralto (Tancredi, Romeo, Falliero) tessitura as well as roles with a soprano leggero tessitura (Beatrice, Amina, etc). Also Cecilia in her first years had not get developed her upper register, the high C gave her a bit of trouble.
Well, Sempre Libera strangulates even real sopranos. Bartoli handles it with ease. She definitely has the vocal color of a mezzo.. but her range and tessitura are definitely sopranoish, and she has the bottom too.. I love BArtoli, but ... I have always felt she was a soprano, with a mezzo hue to her voice. The darker colors come from her mother's methods. low larynx and a low tongue
Cecilia, then, now and always, Gods most precious and exquisite creation; I just love her to bits. I have long wished to hear Cecilia and her mother Silvana sing together, a dream come true; shame its such a short extract. Thanks for this fantastic posting.
I want all of it!!! Anybody got it?!

Verdi never wrote a high Eb. And actually if one looks at the chord progression the right note should be an F! she sings all the high Db's though.
