I really want one but I know I couldn't keep in in my 30 gallon or 20 gallon so I will wait til I one day have a 55 or more. But I will get one of these guys they are cool as hell
i saw one at my petshop but was wonderin if i should get it i have a 15 gallon aquarium will dat be enough to make the knifefish happy and what does it eat and is it hard to take care of?
@Tinwelende i feel lucky being in malaysia... i bought about 4 for 2US dollars each... but didn't have luck with them, pretty hard to keep in a community tank... and very shy
don't do oscars with them-- we thought our knifey's would be alright, but as soon as our big red oscar's mouth was big enough, he bit the head off of one of our BGKs :( I don't recommend learning this lesson the hard way like we did- oscars grow very fast and have a huuggee appetite
Ever considered the fact that they will grow, though? In the beginning they're fine in a smaller tank, yes. But people buy them just because of that and doesn't take into consideration that they'll soon need to buy a bigger tank, which they can't afford. And if you can't, you shouldn't buy this fish at all.
I have, but remember that fish do a great job of adapting to the size of their environments. Now obviously that doesn't mean a 75 gallon fish should be kept in a 10 gallon tank. However, I have two needlenose gars in my 55 gallon thank that are about 6" long, and about 4 years old. There are also needlenose gars in the lake at my university that are well over 3 feet long.
I understand what you're saying though, I just think 40 gallons is acceptable.
They do because they get distressed in too small spaces, which causes negative stress to their bodies, and organisms under stress like this don't develop as much as happy organisms do, therefore the smaller size. They've done experiments like this on human children as well, measuring their height compared to their living conditions and how much stress they've been put under during their upbringing. So it's the neglect that causes them not to grow as big as they do in the wild.
We are wondering whether to put some Oscars in with ours. Figured if maybe we start with small Oscars n they kinda grow up together they might be ok? Guess its the luck of the draw if they get on!
@makkapakka5 I'd say go with something else like Severums or something if you want a cichlid. Oscars can be so aggressive and mean to other tank mates no matter what size they are. On top of that, they crap A LOT. Massive ones. They are also never full (in their own mind). They always want food and become very aggressive when food is in the water.
Had one, he was my favorite fish.... He was huge and stayed in a log all the time, except when he ate... Mine hated the light, only came out when it was dark... He ate some type of fish chips I bought, came out and scarfed them up... Found him floating dead in the tank one day, don't know what happened - hoping it was just old age as the other fish have been fine...
They are strictly carnivorous, so feed him only animalistic foods, like blood worms and brine shrimp and such things. Blood worms are good, cause the knife fish likes to scavenge them from the bottom.
Why does a tiny black fish ghost need a huge tank? i wanna get a black ghost & ima put him in a 10gallon tank just him why is this a bad idea? Please reply thanks.
Because he will grow up to 20 inches no matter what and require a 145 gallon tank eventually! You can keep him in a smaller tank for now, but you WILL NEED a much bigger one eventually. If you don't have that kind of a tank already, you should not get the fish, either, cause you never know if you'll be able to buy a tank like that in a year or so or not.
The smaller it gets, the less he'll thrive. That's just how it is. I didn't come up with the 145 gallon, experts did. 120 gallons wouldn't kill it (right away), but he'll have a longer, happier life the bigger the tank is.
Hi, my knife fish Hack has poop hanging from his "chin". Is that where it usually comes out or..? I'm new to knife fish, and I guess their anal fin leaves only the throat to poop from, but I'd like to be sure ;)
No, the poop comes out from their cloaca, which is located approximately after 4/5 of the body lenght. The poop on the chin has propably just come floating by and got stuck. It will probably go away by itself after a while.
@lucymia yes u r right in case of BGK there poop come out just after his chin end and where his fin started,, nothing to worry this is normal for him,but be care full dnt keep any sucker types of fish with black ghost knife.M faced problem before its sucked on the skin of BGK,as u know BGK dnt hv any scale so its bad for him and also can die for this reason so be careful. Also careful to add any types of chemical or salt adding in water ,bgk hv very sensitive skin which nay cause itching prob.
very nice aquarium. Can you please look at my black ghost knife fish? i don't think their growing cause im only feeding them bloodworms. can you please suggest other food for baby black ghost knife fish??
Brine shrimp, turkey heart, all kinds of animalistic frozen foods, since they're carnivores. I'd say that the more variation there is to their food the better it is and the more likely they'll grow. ;) And make sure they've got plenty of hiding places, so that they're not stressed. If they're stressed they won't eat as much and they won't grow. Good luck!
@thefishboy25 they do take a while to grow as long as he's eating its fine they will look around for food scraps in the sand or gravel looks nice. iv found they like to hide facing upwards. they can get very big so dont wish him to grow to much lol
well, i got a columbian catfish, 2 silver dollers and pleco . im looking into adding a BGK to the tank and maby some other little interesting fish, maby an angel fish, or w/e ... my main consern is ... with the black ghost knife fish be agressive and attack or fight?
It's more likely that the angel fish and the other fish like that will attack the black ghost, but as long as you have a lot of hiding places, it should be fine. It's mainly nocturnal. But the black ghost needs at leasf 145 gallons to thrive, so if you don't have a big enough tank, I wouldn't recommend you to get one.
I just bought one today (July 21st). It was on sale at Pet Smart. I put it in my tank and it immediately hid under a treasure chest ornament. Are they hard to care for? I bought a packet of frozen blood worms. Should i put the cube in frozen? I just wan to be sure it gets food.
Yes, they are quite sensitive to water conditions and such. They are nocturnal, so it will hide most of the day. Try to feed it once you've turned the lights off at night. You can put the blood worms in frozen. Hopefully it will be easier for it to find them that way. Your other fish will try to eat them, too, so try to put it close to where the bgk is hiding. It might take weeks for him to dare to get out of his cave to eat, though. Good luck!
@Tinwelende Thanks for the info. It is still hiding right now. I put the blood worms under the ornament where it is hiding! You're right! I think it will be a while before it ventures out into the tank! Take care!!
No, it wouldn't. For sure the arowana would eat it, and some of the others are pretty aggressive, too. Cichlids are also very tough, so a Black Ghost would not be a good alternative.
hehe, I have two pakistanian botias to, and waiting for the new aquarium for my black ghost. but he is a lot smaller, and the botias are around 12cm long, so they wont get in his tub until he is bigger =) Nice video by the way, I will upload one as soon as it is all set up =)
@Porre1337 I would try frozen bloodworms. Then as gets eating good try other varieties of food. I once owned an 18inch clown knife fish that wouldn't even touch feeders. All he wanted was pellets, krill, and bloodworms.
You can get them at a pet store. I don't know what they cost in the U.S., but in Sweden they cost around 21 bucks, but it depends on the size. $21 is for a 3-4 inch one.
All those fish can be quite vicious sometimes. They are all tough fish and BGKs are quite slow and clueless. Though it has no long fins that would attract the other fish except it's tail fin, which is very sensitive. All fish are different individuals, and I would guess that in your case, it's a 50/50 chance he'd be unharmed.
@Tinwelende BGKs are related to the electric eel which mean any tail nipping fish that would want to try to bit it would get a little shock and then probaly leave it alone
and to be on the safe side i would get a bigger BGK unless all the other fiss are still babies
I have not, no, cause my BGK never got that big before he died. I don't know why he died, but I've heard they are quite sensitive fish and tricky to keep alive. I know that they do eat small fish once they fit into their mouths, though.
BGK grow Huge bro and if you plan on putting it with the oscars i woudnt do it they can both become very aggresive and i think the BGK can produce a little bit of electricity
I've never had any oscars in my tank, I know they can become aggressive. The electrical organ is not strong enough to harm other fish, they use it only to locate insect larvae.
Hi I hv two tanks. One with tiger barbs and some chiclets and other with oscars and red devils. Can I add a BGK to any of these tanks? tank sizes are 70 gallon and 40 gallon.
I would say you need at least a 130 gallon tank to keep a BGK in good conditions, since it can grow so big, so I wouldn't recommend you to get one at all for any of your tanks, unfortunately. :(
It should stay in it's color (unless you have algae on it). Otherwise it's not a very good gravel, and the risk is that it gives off some kind of substance to the water if it changes color like that.
Ok, then I actually think they might get along. Nothing's certain, though, since all fish have their own personalities, but I think it might work. If you keep the tank temperature around 80 F and put a lot of plants in for the knife fish to hide in during the day, it should be all right. And you should have at least an 80 gallon tank for them, since both species grow really big. Good luck! :)
i have a BGK along with my 2 tiger oscars and silver arowana and 3 red ear slider turtle and they get along fine my BGK is super cool with my tiger oscar but my african cichlids bites my BGK which i removed after i made the video..check it out!!!!!!!!!!!BGK!!!!!!!ty
Dude, word, no way. Oh ya but you do know that Oscars are also Cichlids. What ever, my Fire Mouth Cichlid is a bitch to my BGK but luckily I am Getting a 125gallon tank in a few days(other wise I would not have the BGK). It will be sweet. They will be able to have there own territories with out any trouble. There will also be a Fire Eel and my Alligator Gar. I will put a video of it on youtube once it is all done.
I just got a ghost knife about a week ago and since then it hasn't come out of hiding once. I can see his head/tail occasionally under the fake coral or in the castle, but other than that not a glimpse. My tank is a little overcrowded right now, and I'm saving money for another. Could that be why? Do you think he's stressed?
Also, when he gets bigger do you think he may try to eat my Glass Cats?
He will probably not eat your glass cat fish. Not until he's fully grown in that case, but I really doubt it.
Knife fish are really shy, but part of that is because they're nocturnal. But try to give him plenty of hiding places and then just wait until night time. ;) They're aggressive towards its own kind, so I'm guessing that because of this, they don't really have the need of swimming in a school and rather hide in daylight - which is safer, when being alone. Good luck! :)
No, I don't still have it, unfortunately. You can put all calm, friendly fish with it, that are big enough not to get eaten once the knife fish grows. Also you need to make sure the fish have the same water quality needs and the same temperature needs and such.
hey guys im an experienced hobbysist, and the bgkf is definintly one of my favs, one do not keep them with aggressive fishes thieir white striped tails are ideal for fin nipping, two good filterd well oxygenated water hiding places and some vegetation in your aquarium would be optimol, not to mention feeding them natural foods like frozen blood worms, some insects, they may be tricky to feed at first and may die so it is in your best intrest to buy a pack of bloodworms or brinshrimp good luck!

can you get these guys at any pet store chain or do you have to go to more of an exotic pet store?
and how much do these guys gost anyways?
MultiMetalChick82 1 year ago
You can get them at a pet store. I don't know what they cost in the U.S., but in Sweden they cost around 21 bucks, but it depends on the size. $21 is for a 3-4 inch one.

Could a BGK live with 4 African cichlids 1pictus cat 1 red tail shark 1 red belly pacu 3 tiger barbs.
rcfan2007ify1 2 years ago
All those fish can be quite vicious sometimes. They are all tough fish and BGKs are quite slow and clueless. Though it has no long fins that would attract the other fish except it's tail fin, which is very sensitive. All fish are different individuals, and I would guess that in your case, it's a 50/50 chance he'd be unharmed.
Tinwelende 2 years ago
@Tinwelende BGKs are related to the electric eel which mean any tail nipping fish that would want to try to bit it would get a little shock and then probaly leave it alone
and to be on the safe side i would get a bigger BGK unless all the other fiss are still babies
11vs199 1 year ago
put it this way it would get attacked by the tigers, and the shark will attack it until its dead, thats what happened to mine

Have you ever had a problem with your Ghost knife eating your Tetras or any other small fish that will fit into its mouth
Boltz66 2 years ago
I have not, no, cause my BGK never got that big before he died. I don't know why he died, but I've heard they are quite sensitive fish and tricky to keep alive. I know that they do eat small fish once they fit into their mouths, though.

BGK grow Huge bro and if you plan on putting it with the oscars i woudnt do it they can both become very aggresive and i think the BGK can produce a little bit of electricity
dtrainduran 2 years ago
I've never had any oscars in my tank, I know they can become aggressive. The electrical organ is not strong enough to harm other fish, they use it only to locate insect larvae.
Tinwelende 2 years ago
Hi I hv two tanks. One with tiger barbs and some chiclets and other with oscars and red devils. Can I add a BGK to any of these tanks? tank sizes are 70 gallon and 40 gallon.
abhipattu 2 years ago
I would say you need at least a 130 gallon tank to keep a BGK in good conditions, since it can grow so big, so I wouldn't recommend you to get one at all for any of your tanks, unfortunately. :(

How big of a tank does it have to be? I have a 20 gallon. Too small? I want one! Saltwater or Freshwater?
Caroline9806 2 years ago
It's freshwater, but I'd say that it would need at least a 145 gallon tank to thrive... I didn't know that when I bought mine...
Tinwelende 2 years ago
how do you keep your gravel in its colour?
mine starting to have some blown colour thingy on my gravel...
FishLoverX 2 years ago
It should stay in it's color (unless you have algae on it). Otherwise it's not a very good gravel, and the risk is that it gives off some kind of substance to the water if it changes color like that.

The orange freshwater one,but mines yellow.
RonaldButlerJr 2 years ago
Ok, then I actually think they might get along. Nothing's certain, though, since all fish have their own personalities, but I think it might work. If you keep the tank temperature around 80 F and put a lot of plants in for the knife fish to hide in during the day, it should be all right. And you should have at least an 80 gallon tank for them, since both species grow really big. Good luck! :)

I've got one ,and does it get along with a parrotfish??
RonaldButlerJr 2 years ago
Do you mean the orange freshwater parrotfish, or do you mean the saltwater one?
Tinwelende 2 years ago
i have a BGK along with my 2 tiger oscars and silver arowana and 3 red ear slider turtle and they get along fine my BGK is super cool with my tiger oscar but my african cichlids bites my BGK which i removed after i made the video..check it out!!!!!!!!!!!BGK!!!!!!!ty
PiLiP1NOY 2 years ago
Dude, word, no way. Oh ya but you do know that Oscars are also Cichlids. What ever, my Fire Mouth Cichlid is a bitch to my BGK but luckily I am Getting a 125gallon tank in a few days(other wise I would not have the BGK). It will be sweet. They will be able to have there own territories with out any trouble. There will also be a Fire Eel and my Alligator Gar. I will put a video of it on youtube once it is all done.

i have a blackghost knife fish :) they are shy lil fish and they tend to hide
bloodlovin 2 years ago
I just got a ghost knife about a week ago and since then it hasn't come out of hiding once. I can see his head/tail occasionally under the fake coral or in the castle, but other than that not a glimpse. My tank is a little overcrowded right now, and I'm saving money for another. Could that be why? Do you think he's stressed?
Also, when he gets bigger do you think he may try to eat my Glass Cats?
badlander2000 2 years ago
He will probably not eat your glass cat fish. Not until he's fully grown in that case, but I really doubt it.
Knife fish are really shy, but part of that is because they're nocturnal. But try to give him plenty of hiding places and then just wait until night time. ;) They're aggressive towards its own kind, so I'm guessing that because of this, they don't really have the need of swimming in a school and rather hide in daylight - which is safer, when being alone. Good luck! :)

do you stay have it if so what can you put with it
F1Ruse 2 years ago
No, I don't still have it, unfortunately. You can put all calm, friendly fish with it, that are big enough not to get eaten once the knife fish grows. Also you need to make sure the fish have the same water quality needs and the same temperature needs and such.
Tinwelende 2 years ago
hey guys im an experienced hobbysist, and the bgkf is definintly one of my favs, one do not keep them with aggressive fishes thieir white striped tails are ideal for fin nipping, two good filterd well oxygenated water hiding places and some vegetation in your aquarium would be optimol, not to mention feeding them natural foods like frozen blood worms, some insects, they may be tricky to feed at first and may die so it is in your best intrest to buy a pack of bloodworms or brinshrimp good luck!
