Ninguém nunca a ouviu cantar! Morra", escreveu outro
Justin Bieber should not be nominated in any singing category... but I think the grammies should add a new category for the most marketed non-talented performer award and Justin Bieber should walk away with that one...
Espranza Spalding is one of the best performers I have heard in a long long long time!!!
Sweetheart is beautiful. She is a talented instrumentalist and vocalist and has some charisma, but her music is somewhat boring. I can't see her becoming hugely popular. As she is now, she will be great in da world of Jazz only. I hope she proves me wrong, cuz she is cute. I still don't think she should have won though. I only just started listening to these bands, but it should have been between Florence and the Machine and Mumford and sons. Mumford Sons in my opinion took it, lyrically.
A breath of fresh air, hopefully her influence will give more of our youth the inspiration to expand their talents and look outside the box. She is amazing.
Sidney is the man, his daughter Syndey Tamiia is the one whom I was speaking of. I just assumed people knew that. She's an actress and has been on a lot of great shows.
@Rao665 the girls here are nice! but thats that west african mix going. Its more like girls of the "americas" ! whether in canada, usa, el caribe, or south america you see this!
My 15 year old daughter likes Justin Bieber (Poster in her room and all) we are black, she does not quite know what real talent is at this stage of her life. I did not know who she/Esperanza was either until after a little research, But this Old dog does recognize talent and this young lady here has talent. Congratulation on your award last night and continued success in the future.
@nubian377 Right? People always say to me, is that your real hair? And I'm always like, "uh yeah, should it not be?" Then I realize that people think that every black chick who rocks her hair natural whether like Esperanza's or Sydney Poitier (I'm somewhere in between those two these days as I've just chopped off twelve inches!), they think we all wear weave. I never had until last march where I just wanted to see what it was like. It was weird and made me feel phony! Took it out after a week.
I don't understand why black girls put on weave, when they have such beautiful hair. kinky and its nice to just feel your hands through them. The weave is phony and very few look good in it. Get back your kinky hair and display it proudly.
@nubian377 BECAUSE we've been conditioned to hate our hair. We're told that Euro/Asian hair is the best. Straigt, fine, and long. I was watching Tyra, the admitted queen of weaves, and one girl said she only had relationships with white men or non-black latino men so that her children's hair would not be nappy. I very rarely say this, but I SWEAR it's true. youtube tyra and hair and you can see it for yourself.

I think I'm in love with Esperanza Spalding. For so many reasons. Her life's story is so similar to mine. She's a warm personality. Not to mention she's incredibly talented and just beautiful. She loves Bossa Nova and jazz fusion, and I grew up loving the stuff. She even grew up with Yo-Yo Ma as a major influence, as did I. Now I HAVE to get famous as a musician, just to meet her and date her before some other guy does! My instruments of choice are guitar and electric bass.
adorable!...guys little secret...as a mother of 2 talented and smart girls, you don't "catch them" you walk along side them with your talents, skills and knowledge. Someone stated "some man will be lucky"...well she needs to feel lucky as well....If she is in the guy market, I hope she chooses well. BEAUTIFUL TALENT...her inner beauty shines thru to her natural outer beauty!!!
@joysworld53 couldn't agree more!...you should write this as a "reply" to him so that he can see it is directed towards him (hit the reply and put copy and paste) thank you!!
@Thandiwandi Found her comment and replied. I'm really not the bad guy here (not sure if there is one here?). We probably agree on a whole lot more than you think, but I could be wrong.
@joysworld53 Agreed in part, however one most certainly does "catch" them, as it is always a kind of pursuit (if she learns to "choose well" that is, instead of taking every joe smoe that winks at her). After the man has proven himself worth her time and consideration, then her heart, he should continue to show her why she made a good choice. in the same way, she should continue to show him why he did the same. Love is certainly a two way street where pride has no room. It's a team sport.
Wow!!! I haven't been inspired and amazed and astonished and astounded by anything in a long time, but her musicianship and passion and fortitude has had a profound effect on me. I love musicians like this who don't really care for anything but doing it. They live breath sleep and eat it and their dedication is rewarded through the ability they've acquired. This is just amazing.
@Skyjuice70 Yes I would get in line and she and I are from NYC, shit how did I miss her she got away she is a dream, and her smile makes you want to smile man maybe ill get my chance , amd I would stand in line and you behind me ....dam she is a catch
man i cant wait till im finish writing my book i feel the same way you are amaizing SPALDING . I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT YOU FROM THE BET AWARDS . TRULY YOU PUT IT DOWN AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH YOUR VOICE AND BASS.
She's got a cadence even in the way she speaks. It's fascinating and mesmerizing to listen to her talk. Even as young as she is, Esperanza's got a poise, and charm, and definite wit about her that's well beyond her years. Awesome artist.
I love her music and general artistry, but now I truly love her as a human being. What strength of character! I deeply respect and admire her for that. Her honesty, enthusiasm and passion is so refreshing. She states how she wanted to make a greater difference in the world by studying something like political science, but I think she is making a difference by being true to herself, following her bliss and sharing that in this kind of an interview. She is truly an inspiration!
She sounds soooooo down to earth, man! I thought by just hearing her songs she was a person that would be the type that acts and lives in a very rich lifestyle, but, she is sooo freakin' down to earth. She sounds so cool! A type that you can "kick it" with. Man....
thanks for nothing ludious73,.now what possibly is there left for me to say?,.you said it all,.im so glad that they made an interview so we can see the Esperanza Spalding "the person" and not just this gorgeous sweet thang singing and playing that is amazing period!
Yes...or some woman. It may turn out that her open-mindedness is not just limited to music. Regardless of gender, Esperanza & her music seems to transcend all strictly defined genres.
"...some man is going to be lucky to have her one day, she is really a catch." Some "man" is going to be lucky? How about some "person" , regardless of gender, is going to be lucky, and on that subject, if it is mutual love, compassion, spiritual connection, then Esperanza will also be lucky. It sounds like you can open up your vocabulary, since it's very outdated to think of a woman as a "catch". Sounds like some kind of redneck fishing term.
Esperanza is going to make some MAN very happy. She IS a catch. There is nothing dated about that. It's a compliment, and nothing more. And I strongly agree. Esperanza is talented and sexy. Qualities that real men dig in women. Don't try to restrict others with your pseudo-elitist liberal attitude, Hunter Mann.. Enjoy her music..Live and let live.
Yes, she will someday make a MAN or a WOMAN very happy, that is if she chooses to couple-up, get married, etc. as most people do. Using the term "catch" IS very much a dated, tired old term. A woman is not some fish or animal that another person catches, snares, traps into their life. Wake up, it's not 1973 anymore.
Again...Enjoy Esperanza's music, live and let live. Stop "straight-bashin", This ain't the "Amazon Island". Grow up.
Enjoy the music, Esperanza's beautiful, and a serious catch. Some Man is gonna be lucky to be her husband so quit ya fantasy. Go marry a horse with ya open-minded self. LOL
Esperanza can couple-up with who ever she wants. If you insist that it can only be a man, send her a letter stating the "rules" and limits to your world. I'm not straight-bashin, but you seem to be bashin' contemporary, liberated thinking and the simple concept of pro-choice when it comes to people's lives. It's about the music, not what a great "catch" someone will be for someone else. If you insist on the gender of who her life's companion must be, then what race do you insist on?
@HunterMann Hunter shut the hell up your a mark what a sucker ,she would be a catch and a fine wife for any normal man good lord you silly people from this generation.
@BLACKNINJA1 Someone who objectifies women, stating that they are just something to catch, own, control(and marry... how 1950's!), is flaunting their IQ and lack of awareness about the strides women have made in becoming free & independent of chauvanistic male pigs. This singer is about so much more than being a cute chick. Grow up you l.o.s.e.r.!
@ludious73 o please. she didn't become talented to be some man's catch! alluring/beautiful that she may be, that's not what she should be acclaimed for...to belong to some man. to become property. she is driven because that's what she's NOT. she is driven to better herself...and i don't think it has anything to do with some man being "lucky to have her one day." how condescending.
@Thandiwandi It is clear to me that you speak from some inner struggle which has painted my words with meanings they were never meant to have. For that, I refuse to answer you in anger, or according to your own folly. I will respectfully request that you reread my comment for what it was; praise for a phenomenal woman.Period. I never said she is who/what she is so that she could shine as some mans trophy, those are your words alone. You're wrong. She should be acclaimed for EVERYTHING she is.
@ludious73 you're right. it is an inner struggle. you should be careful how you write things...it looks like you are objectifying her...sorry I am an anthropology student...language is a very very powerful tool. You say "what a woman, she is so alluring" or "she is really a catch" the way these are integrated with the "talent" etc piece, the juxtaposition, seems condescending as an intellectual.
@Thandiwandi You are right, it could be worded better for those who read into words closely. How about I delete my comment and try again? I respect this woman, and all women, and all people, for just being people. I am certainly attracted to Miss Spalding for several reasons, but I am not a man who'd box her up in glass to pull out and show off at dinner parties. When it comes to all relationships, romantic or otherwise, I am interested in how we could enrich one another's lives, not just mine.
@ludious73 hey thanks so much for taking my comment into consideration I really appreciate it! I think what joysworld53 had to say pretty much sums up my argument. I do not think you are the bad guy...the way were are socialized to think about language, and also the way language is constructed...and further more the way you use langauage can imply power and/or subjugation. I don't think it's anyone's fault though! I just wanted to let you know as a woman, that's how i percieve it.
@ludious73 ...and I'd like to bridge that gap of miscommunication between men and women/with talk of power discourse and language that tends to subjegate women/and leaves men in a position to dominate. I hope my opinion influences you to think about language and power/influences SOCIETY to think about what they are saying and how it can objectify someone even if the intentions are good, regardless of which sex says it! It's institutionalized/ it's socialized/ but we can do better/ we can change!
@ludious73 "some man is going to be lucky to HAVE HER one day, she is really a catch" come on, that's clearly laden with objectification, and takes away from what she said in the video...which is that she wants to be taken seriously...not taken to be some man's wife one day...like that should be her ultimate goal. or that she's even thinking of that. Of course men would say something like that. I'm sure she's flattered, no doubt, but she doesn't need your flattery. Stop hitting on her guys!
@Thandiwandi Ffrom my perspective, when one marries, you both are no longer two, but one, and you give yourself to the other person. It's a done deal, equal gift. "I am yours, you are mine" is a thing of true love.I do see how you could take my words wrong, however, I will warn you to choose your battles carefully. In the fight for equal respect for women, women can become brash, argumentative, and "naggy" as men would call it. Those type of people lose respect and gain contempt, male or female.
It took me only 2 seconds listening to her on the radio, singing "Ponta de Areia", to go crazy. And that melody line on the piano, my God, that's hypnotical.
I'm brazilian, and heard that song thousands of times, by many artists, but I was never touched like that by any of them, even from Milton Nascimento, the composer himself.
I never wanted the song to end, but at the same time I wanted to know who was singing, so I could look her up, and get to know more about that unbelievable voice.
What is the name of this song that starts at 4:35 in this video? I love the melody of it , but I can't find it anywhere.

She is a true genius, and she feels her music. It is good to see young people advance in jazz and maintain great intrest in the arts.

This is such an inspirational story.
It's so blatant that God has ordered her steps, opening doors all along the way; all it takes is a willingness to be obedient to your life's purpose.

Man....

thanks for nothing ludious73,.now what possibly is there left for me to say?,.you said it all,.im so glad that they made an interview so we can see the Esperanza Spalding "the person" and not just this gorgeous sweet thang singing and playing that is amazing period!
basskillaz 2 years ago
Yes...or some woman. It may turn out that her open-mindedness is not just limited to music. Regardless of gender, Esperanza & her music seems to transcend all strictly defined genres.
HunterMann 1 year ago
I'm commenting on Ludious73's quote that:
"...some man is going to be lucky to have her one day, she is really a catch." Some "man" is going to be lucky? How about some "person" , regardless of gender, is going to be lucky, and on that subject, if it is mutual love, compassion, spiritual connection, then Esperanza will also be lucky. It sounds like you can open up your vocabulary, since it's very outdated to think of a woman as a "catch". Sounds like some kind of redneck fishing term.
HunterMann 1 year ago
@HunterMann
Enjoy her music..Live and let live.
rondeisel 1 year ago 2
Yes, she will someday make a MAN or a WOMAN very happy, that is if she chooses to couple-up, get married, etc. as most people do. Using the term "catch" IS very much a dated, tired old term. A woman is not some fish or animal that another person catches, snares, traps into their life. Wake up, it's not 1973 anymore.
HunterMann 1 year ago
@HunterMann
LOL
rondeisel 1 year ago
Esperanza can couple-up with who ever she wants. If you insist that it can only be a man, send her a letter stating the "rules" and limits to your world. I'm not straight-bashin, but you seem to be bashin' contemporary, liberated thinking and the simple concept of pro-choice when it comes to people's lives. It's about the music, not what a great "catch" someone will be for someone else. If you insist on the gender of who her life's companion must be, then what race do you insist on?
HunterMann 1 year ago
no race just gender

BLACKNINJA1 1 year ago
@BLACKNINJA1 Someone who objectifies women, stating that they are just something to catch, own, control(and marry... how 1950's!), is flaunting their IQ and lack of awareness about the strides women have made in becoming free & independent of chauvanistic male pigs. This singer is about so much more than being a cute chick. Grow up you l.o.s.e.r.!
HunterMann 1 year ago
@ludious73 or woman.....you never know
stroque1228 1 year ago
@ludious73 o please. she didn't become talented to be some man's catch! alluring/beautiful that she may be, that's not what she should be acclaimed for...to belong to some man. to become property. she is driven because that's what she's NOT. she is driven to better herself...and i don't think it has anything to do with some man being "lucky to have her one day." how condescending.
Thandiwandi 1 year ago
@Thandiwandi It is clear to me that you speak from some inner struggle which has painted my words with meanings they were never meant to have. For that, I refuse to answer you in anger, or according to your own folly. I will respectfully request that you reread my comment for what it was; praise for a phenomenal woman.Period. I never said she is who/what she is so that she could shine as some mans trophy, those are your words alone. You're wrong. She should be acclaimed for EVERYTHING she is.
ludious73 1 year ago
@ludious73 you're right. it is an inner struggle. you should be careful how you write things...it looks like you are objectifying her...sorry I am an anthropology student...language is a very very powerful tool. You say "what a woman, she is so alluring" or "she is really a catch" the way these are integrated with the "talent" etc piece, the juxtaposition, seems condescending as an intellectual.
Thandiwandi 1 year ago
@Thandiwandi You are right, it could be worded better for those who read into words closely. How about I delete my comment and try again? I respect this woman, and all women, and all people, for just being people. I am certainly attracted to Miss Spalding for several reasons, but I am not a man who'd box her up in glass to pull out and show off at dinner parties. When it comes to all relationships, romantic or otherwise, I am interested in how we could enrich one another's lives, not just mine.
ludious73 1 year ago
@ludious73 hey thanks so much for taking my comment into consideration I really appreciate it! I think what joysworld53 had to say pretty much sums up my argument. I do not think you are the bad guy...the way were are socialized to think about language, and also the way language is constructed...and further more the way you use langauage can imply power and/or subjugation. I don't think it's anyone's fault though! I just wanted to let you know as a woman, that's how i percieve it.
Thandiwandi 1 year ago
@ludious73 ...and I'd like to bridge that gap of miscommunication between men and women/with talk of power discourse and language that tends to subjegate women/and leaves men in a position to dominate. I hope my opinion influences you to think about language and power/influences SOCIETY to think about what they are saying and how it can objectify someone even if the intentions are good, regardless of which sex says it! It's institutionalized/ it's socialized/ but we can do better/ we can change!
Thandiwandi 1 year ago
@ludious73 "some man is going to be lucky to HAVE HER one day, she is really a catch" come on, that's clearly laden with objectification, and takes away from what she said in the video...which is that she wants to be taken seriously...not taken to be some man's wife one day...like that should be her ultimate goal. or that she's even thinking of that. Of course men would say something like that. I'm sure she's flattered, no doubt, but she doesn't need your flattery. Stop hitting on her guys!
Thandiwandi 1 year ago
@Thandiwandi Ffrom my perspective, when one marries, you both are no longer two, but one, and you give yourself to the other person. It's a done deal, equal gift. "I am yours, you are mine" is a thing of true love.I do see how you could take my words wrong, however, I will warn you to choose your battles carefully. In the fight for equal respect for women, women can become brash, argumentative, and "naggy" as men would call it. Those type of people lose respect and gain contempt, male or female.

Much to my surprise, she's also an incredible bass player, and her talent completely blew my mind.
Pat Metheny, Patty Austin... they can't be wrong, she's a virtuose at birth.
In 2 seconds, she captured my heart, musically speaking.
Wow, my ears are in love.
montalvomachado 2 years ago 2
It took me only 2 seconds listening to her on the radio, singing "Ponta de Areia", to go crazy. And that melody line on the piano, my God, that's hypnotical.
I'm brazilian, and heard that song thousands of times, by many artists, but I was never touched like that by any of them, even from Milton Nascimento, the composer himself.
I never wanted the song to end, but at the same time I wanted to know who was singing, so I could look her up, and get to know more about that unbelievable voice.
