Hey Ken, I was wondering if I could talk to you sometime via email or whatever is best for you. I would like to know if you have any dvds or cds for sell to help me on my voice. I have only been playing in a band for 1 year, & suprisingly won the audition for frontman for the band I am in now. Its a long haired 80s tribute band. I have made strides, but feel I want to step up my game. If you can help me, I greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Shane. Im on facebook & denvbroncos07@yahoo.com
@Salsero12 Phil has been a professional singer for years. He has sustained some damage but not to the npoint of losing range. This is why it is critical he start taking this seriously. Good question :-)
I wish I could afford vocal lessons. It's such a drag wanting to improve my singing and not being able to because I don't have the money to. I have major issues with belting all my high notes and singing them in my throat instead of my diaphragm. I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix it. Music and singing are the loves of my life, though. I can't give up.
See Ken actually replies to comments on his videos, and seems honest and sincere in wanting to help people. Willing to listen to all these people's voices through his email really shows his compassion. I don't see that with ANY other coaches i've watched on Youtube. What a great guy! Only vocal coach i'd ever trust.
Hey Ken, I made an attempt at posting you a video response of a song I covered, I feel like when I sing Im doing something wrong, any chance you could have a listen and give me a pointer or two?
@surfstomp how do you know you are a bari? I thought I was too until I worked my voice. My highest nore was an F# to G. On a reall good day an A once or twice. Now I sing an octave above that whenever I want...
I really enjoy these videos! I have uploaded one video onto my account and have gotten some good feedback. And I was wondering if I could get an evaluation from you? I go back and forth with my confidence as a singer and I really feel like I need some honest critique.
Hey Ken, I just starting really getting into singing and rock music this year. I don't know how to read notes like i expect most singer scan. I can read guiter and piano notes, and i think treble-cleft. Should I try to learn this? Is it possible to do this on my own. And The higher i sing don't seem to sound as good as the lower notes i sing. I'ma girl and feel kind of awkward about singing higher notes. Should my voice be able to go higher because I'ma girl?
Thanks alot! your stuff is helpful. I am not a muscician, so most of the terminology is not understandable to me. But in general, I do benifit. Is it alright if I send you a sample of me singing a song and perhaps you could let me know where I stand? and one more thing, my thoat muscle get tense sometimes, especially when i sing high notes, is that right or worng?
hi ken, brilliant stuff. can these lessons help anybody? i mean above middle C I can struggle to get a D or just about Eb. I dont have any falsetto. and my voice is always hoarse. On recordings i have done it sounds terrible and very weak. I will only attempt songs that are within 1 octave. I love singing but it can be a nightmare when i sing live. and i get embaresst telling people i am a singer. Do you think it is strange that i dont have a falsetto? and can you help. thanks
hey ken, im 15 and am about to become a lead singer for my schools rock band, only problem is that im not that good. I really need to learn how to use vibrato, belt, and sing with rasp, and i only have one summer to do it. would your dvd's really help a person like me?
This is amazing, I am so glad that I have been learning my mixed voice. It really is a life saver...I have gotten it up to a G#5 (full voice). In songs, I'm only going up to D5 or Eb5. The higher falsetto range that I have helped as well.
Hey Ken, i have a few questions, im 17, and how much are the dvds? Do you cover stuff such as belting and screams as well? I am in a band as a guitarist, but want to do vocals as well (seperately). The only thing i currently learned how to do is growls, such as in black metal, and i can do low to high ones.
@Gimmler333 all the info for the DVD/CDs are on the Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy. Com web site. I don't teach screams until stage 3 however I wouldn't go straight to stage 3 because it is extremely important to build up to that for good vocal health reasons
@Gomez799 Gomez, your stage comes with a 10 minute web cam session, it would be best to use so I can effective demonstrate and answer these questions for you. E mail Rob from on the fron of the web site to set this up.
@MrLeftyplayer The DVD's are approximately 50 minutes in length. They come with an audio wrokout that is also approximtaely 50 minutes in length. Each stage comes with a free 10 minute web cam or phone consultation. After that you would need to purchase whatever time you felt you needed.
Is there a Short Video ,Of whats Actual on the DVD,A peek into your lessons,If I bought your three DVD set, please let me know,Like to get a chance to see a little before I buy
I don't have video samples at this time. I posted some a while back and people thought that it was the whole program of which it wasn't.
I walk you through step by step, open throat technique, showing you myself exactly how I do it. I then take you through specific vowel modifications not only relieve stress and tension for range and freedom, but I also go step by step on how to properly connect chest with head voice etc. Then onto practical application examples
Honestly I've been trying to rationalize buying your DVD because I absolutely hate my voice. I would love nothing more than to find a voice I can enjoy hearing myself make. Has that ever been a problem for others, where they truly never actually liked their voice. I have always wished to be capable of singing in tune, and enjoy the sound that I am making... This probably sounds dumb
@LeNSensai That;s not a dumb question at all. Many many people don't like the sound of their voice initially. (or they don;t like certain parts of their voice...like when they sing high etc). Understanding tone, and the correct way to place your vowel sounds will help you find good tone that will grow and you will like.
Hey Ken- I've got your first CD/DVD. Cool stuff. Regarding this video with Phil, going up to the headvoice with EE and OO is simple, but in this video, it's Ah. I can't seem to do it without belting or without the yodel if done quieter and switching to head voice as Phil is here. Is there anything that can be done to make that easier?
@brywool all of the stages come with a free 10 minute web cam or phone consultation. Hit my assistant Rob on the web site and let's take a look at what you are doing in person so I can best help you
@kentamplin Hi Ken- Actually, I had set that up for Monday until I watched this particular video. I had other questions and one of them was "should this be done in headvoice". The answer, according to this video seems to be yes, now I'm just trying to figure out how to do that. I can sing in headvoice fine, but with this open throat and the "It's the Lah" deal, it doesn't seem to work as easy.
Man when I sing... I unno I can play a guitar by ear but I swear im tone def when it comes to singing and my voice sounds like theres something in the way and its half muffled... now its like 3 am and everyones asleep so I wasnt able to make noise while watching lol but whats a diaphram and is singing with your lungs bad?
@ZomBeatzProductions it's muffled because you are stricturing the back of the throat with your tongue and yes, singing with your lungs hel[ps to cause the tension that muff;es your voice
Hi Ken, Love your stuff. I'm in a Rush Tribute band and I love it! When it comes to the high end, I'm pushing to hard and worry about damaging my voice.I' ve done some training with Roger Burnley (and have nothing but good things to say about him). I noticed your lessons are basically video based. My concern is how you would diagnose my singing issues if you can't hear me sing. I'm definitely interested in your course, but my concern is making the same mistakes without one-on-one training.
@SoundsLikeRush actually I do in studio lessons and the majority of what I do is web cam coaching. It's a good idea to get stage 1 first to familiarize yourself with the method. It will save you time and money. It's all up on Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy. com I hope that helps.
I just found out you're not in Ny. My voice range is really the middle which I got mixed up for soprano. anyway I'd like to get started with your lessons also how to hit high notes.I was rejected 5 times on Americas Got Talent check out the video audition, type for your eyes only americas got talent video audition
@yehoshua1977 I am in Newport Beach, California however a majority of what i do is web cam lessons all over the world... you can check out ken tamplin vocal academy. com
question, im 18 and my mom can sing my "Dad cant" and my older brother is an indie singer and 3-4 of my sisters can sing or at least control half of what comes out there mouths, the question is if i can hit a not every now and then can i learn to sing/control my voice? or is sing a an inherited trait?
Question for anyone who will respond... Im 18 my biological father along with my aunt and grandmother can all sing. I never tried to sing but within the last couple of months i have been trying for some reason and i can hear the vibrato and i'll sing something when i think im alone but people will hear me and say they didn't know i can sing. I truly don't think I can but i hear a vibrato for sure. Not really strong but its there and what i was wondering is that would there be some chance...
@CANNONakaHADDY cont... that i can actually sing ? I would really like to sing not even to be famous but just to sing Happy Birthday to my mom and record some vocals on songs that i would create.
Hey I'm dan, 15, And I perform reguarly. I have problems with my falsetto all the time, it jus isn't there most of the time, and I was wondering if it was my age or tsome common mistake I may be making. Have you any tips for keeping it in shape?
That's what I'm talkin' about! This is the thing I'd like to learn to do with my voice. I always push too hard and can't sing as light as you guys when I make my "passagio".
@kentamplin Wise answer! haha he has a very unique voice, very talented guy. Though sometimes I see him inhaling with his chest going up instead of the expansion of diaprhagm. When people have it, they have it, right?
i wrote an original song( i got so many) few days ago & got the first music shit track (cause i played it at first but asked a professionnal guitarist to play it.i felt lazy) & its a metal-hard rock girl song so..im used 2sing some pop-country-funk-r & b and rock song.the song fits me well & i know i can do it but i want some tips 2have this rock voice or just simply how 2make some easy screams coz there is some but i never tried before...iishhh 4 da rest of da song,i sorta sing like evanescance
this is so funny!! hahaha in a good way! Phill is like realy entertaining =) liked that video live lesson.... i need better this kinda teaching then some theory without a student. cause i can see myself in what he does or does not! =) it's like he talks to me =)im french so if a teacher makes a video without a live example, its harder for me to understand what he emans if i dont hear it.thats why i loved that video
Just this one video has opened me up to higher notes and i thank you for your contribution. i've hit the G (15th fret) twice. hahaha one of the main problems i'm having though is saying words, even in the lower areas of my range. it's obvious that i'm doing something wrong and it just urks me badly. >:( haha
Ken you are awesome!! I am having trouble when i am going through the exercise above the high E, I am hitting the pitch but alot of tention like i am straining at that point. Am i singing through my chest or what could i be doing wrong? In this video he isnt straining at all. Too much tension when i do it.
@shepherdkieran actually I was serious. Tye best way is to record and monitor yourself next to the information on the DVD. This really does help. The other solution is a web cam lesson.
hey ken, i have a similar sort of issue as phil, as in when i sing through my passagio, i have a raspy, vocal fry sort of sound, when i want a clean, pure tone. I have no idea how to fix the problem, the more support i try and use to make the sound louder, the rasp tends to become louder, unless i bring the voice to the back of the throat, but that makes it sound unnatural and false. Do you have any advice?
@mrunveiled You need to learn how to "clean up" the voice so it starts out clean. Then you can "lean" into the sound for rasp. This way you can come back to clean when you need it. This happens by a series of correct exercises done very lightly until the voice is warned up. I cover this in my DVD series oin the KenTamplinVocalAcademy. Com site...
@kentamplin ^^ ic, thanks. For a moment i was thinking that i may have overused my vocal cords, but i couldn't remember doing so. Now i see that it's probably just a bad habit- i notice too that i seem to be overcompressing as i sing higher, and thus i get a dirty, gritty sound that sounds ugly D:
does anyone know ken talks about the guy realising tension while singing what about if u have a guitar on your lap or hanging by a strap? and dont tell me to go to his site bc i did and im 14 not paying that much yet i will someday
hello ken, i know you've been working a ton with all types of voices but I don't see any women in you videos. do you also help us? lol I believe that I can have a huge range with practice and would like to have a career as a vocalist. you mention that you help with rock/pop, I would like to sing kind of a rock/rnb fusion lol, can your lessons help me?
@rg4milahmi Rob Hart here (Ken's assistant). Have you been to the Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy web site? The featured person on the front page is a girl and there are several videos throughout the site that feature female student of Ken.
I bought Ken's program and took a couple lessons and I've seen a dramatic improvement in my vocal abilities. Ken can not only sing, but he's an amazing teacher as well.
hey ken, could you do me a favor, if you have time and check out a singer from Aus singing sweet child of mine on you-tube, the band is downlode, and at around 3:04 - 3:20, and at the end of the song when he belts out "where do we go", he has this amazing voice transformation, i cant work it out, he tells me it has saved his voice and is a learned technique and it has no effect on the throat as such, sounds awesome, i'm jealous, i have ordered your 1st DVD too.
hey man great video ur really good do you think you could do me a favor and tell me if my voice is good enough to continue this i only have songs with me rapping but if u could try to judge my voice from there that would be cool im on youtube and i hope to buy your program soon keep it up
I think it's both. From a costr effective standpoint, learn all the basics from the technique via the DVD, then take a web cam to make sure you are doing it right and so on :-)
i just ordered your first dvd for dudes......my wife and i do a bunch of white stripes covers and i need major help with the vocals. I've been playing guitar for 20 years so i'm cool on that i just need help with vocals....big time. i hope this works
Ken, you are the Alton Brown of the voice. You not only teach people how to sing, you teach the science of it. What a great way to learn! BTW, BIG Shout fan. What a great way to share your talent post-band.
Thank you Ken, i am learning so much already! your videos are a god send :)

this real bright 'ah' vowel.. doenst that induce a high larynx causing strain?
your tongue in the 'ah' sound is like very concaved, i cant get mine to curve that much is that okay?
in your stage 1 dvd, you said that the vowel modifies from the 'ah' to a 'oh?' to 'uh', but in this video you say 'ah'/'aw'/'uh'
another question..
i get this pain under my lower jaw (right under the jaw below that bone and on both sides) that i get after singing.. what can this be?

Hey I'm dan, 15, And I perform reguarly. I have problems with my falsetto all the time, it jus isn't there most of the time, and I was wondering if it was my age or tsome common mistake I may be making. Have you any tips for keeping it in shape?
Swansong28 1 year ago
@Swansong28 cutting back your air and making it as bright as possible will help grow your falsetto

That's what I'm talkin' about! This is the thing I'd like to learn to do with my voice. I always push too hard and can't sing as light as you guys when I make my "passagio".
I can't..... YET!!!! Thank you again!
homemmoita 1 year ago
I like what you're saying. You clearly understand the voice unlike a lot of pseudo-singing teachers. Good job :-)

Ken!
Can I ask you why does Adam Lambert stick his tongue out? It's really interesting!
ramii07 1 year ago
@ramii07 He does that (so do I in fact) to pull the tongue away from the back of the throat to keep the back of the throat open and not constricted.
kentamplin 1 year ago
@kentamplin ok thanks a lot! So it's kind of an open throat technique. Does Adam use speech level singing?
ramii07 1 year ago
@ramii07 I can't speak for Adam...
kentamplin 1 year ago

=) it's like he talks to me =)im french so if a teacher makes a video without a live example, its harder for me to understand what he emans if i dont hear it.thats why i loved that video
musikLmind 1 year ago

@shepherdkieran record yourself and listen... or take a web cam...

hey ken, i have a similar sort of issue as phil, as in when i sing through my passagio, i have a raspy, vocal fry sort of sound, when i want a clean, pure tone. I have no idea how to fix the problem, the more support i try and use to make the sound louder, the rasp tends to become louder, unless i bring the voice to the back of the throat, but that makes it sound unnatural and false. Do you have any advice?
thanks, i'm a 16 year old boy ^_^
mrunveiled 1 year ago
@mrunveiled You need to learn how to "clean up" the voice so it starts out clean. Then you can "lean" into the sound for rasp. This way you can come back to clean when you need it. This happens by a series of correct exercises done very lightly until the voice is warned up. I cover this in my DVD series oin the KenTamplinVocalAcademy. Com site...
kentamplin 1 year ago
@kentamplin ^^ ic, thanks. For a moment i was thinking that i may have overused my vocal cords, but i couldn't remember doing so. Now i see that it's probably just a bad habit- i notice too that i seem to be overcompressing as i sing higher, and thus i get a dirty, gritty sound that sounds ugly D:
mrunveiled 1 year ago
I notice when he starts the note at the bottom theres a little raspy vocal fry there. WHy is that? is that ?bad?"
TheSubwaysurfer 1 year ago
@TheSubwaysurfer He has rasp because he has been singing many years incorrectly... Rasp can be used to great texture if you are singing correctly...

hello ken, i know you've been working a ton with all types of voices but I don't see any women in you videos. do you also help us? lol I believe that I can have a huge range with practice and would like to have a career as a vocalist. you mention that you help with rock/pop, I would like to sing kind of a rock/rnb fusion lol, can your lessons help me?
rg4milahmi 1 year ago
@rg4milahmi Rob Hart here (Ken's assistant). Have you been to the Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy web site? The featured person on the front page is a girl and there are several videos throughout the site that feature female student of Ken.

I bought Ken's program and took a couple lessons and I've seen a dramatic improvement in my vocal abilities. Ken can not only sing, but he's an amazing teacher as well.

hey ken, could you do me a favor, if you have time and check out a singer from Aus singing sweet child of mine on you-tube, the band is downlode, and at around 3:04 - 3:20, and at the end of the song when he belts out "where do we go", he has this amazing voice transformation, i cant work it out, he tells me it has saved his voice and is a learned technique and it has no effect on the throat as such, sounds awesome, i'm jealous, i have ordered your 1st DVD too.
stebolian 1 year ago
hey man great video ur really good do you think you could do me a favor and tell me if my voice is good enough to continue this i only have songs with me rapping but if u could try to judge my voice from there that would be cool im on youtube and i hope to buy your program soon keep it up

I'm this close to committing to KTVA.
But after seeing this vid, I'm not sure if learning from dvd can achieve the same kind of result as the in person, 1-on-1 lessons
moonbal 2 years ago
I think it's both. From a costr effective standpoint, learn all the basics from the technique via the DVD, then take a web cam to make sure you are doing it right and so on :-)

Ken, you are the Alton Brown of the voice. You not only teach people how to sing, you teach the science of it. What a great way to learn! BTW, BIG Shout fan. What a great way to share your talent post-band.
