  • I want a pop pop boat

  • ten people couldnt make one

  • Oh my duh God

    *・゜゚・*:.。..。.:*・'(*゚▽゚*)'・*:.。. .。.:*・゜゚・*

    Truly awesome!

  • WOOOOOO!!!!! BANGLADESH WOOOO!!!!!! BANGLADESH BANGLADESH BANGLADESH!!!

  • Wow.I wish lessons here in Singapore schools are just like yours. How i wish i was one of your students...

  • is that ali in the video

  • Awesome. Thanks

  • Do you think it would be possible to make one of these remote control? W/ Rudder and possibly heat of the flame?

  • @wettfeat Yes indeed, that's one of the most talked about things on the yahoo pop pop steamboats group. Dig into the archives.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker Thanks. If I ever make one I'll be sure to let you know about it.

  • can you tell me what i need to make that kind of boats :D

    plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • must cover the top of the boiler?

  • @chindas12 Covering is mostly for looks, but it can be useful to block wind which interferes with the candle flame.

    Slater

  • the only advantage to these are that they arent painted with lead

  • hello, i think i forgot to thank you for sharing us how to make a pop pop boat. i asked you here one time and you answered. my boat luckily worked and so i had something to pass for my project :)

  • @jeune000 Bravo, thanks for the feedback

    Slater

  • nice video!!!

  • i want that green bangladesh boat

  • Hey Slater what part is the flat boat?

  • @nevaldry111 Part 24

  • i am in the stage of making fitting the engine to my boat :)

  • oyes

podrias traducir todos estos videos de como hacer una lancha pop pop a español plis

  • @marcos49535 Es una buena idea. Tal vez alguien puede ayudar con la traducción. No hablo español.

    Slater

  • @marcos49535 Voy a necesitar ayuda para traducir.

  • I just finished my engine and at first it didn't work, the second time I tried it and it worked, but it was quiet?

  • @hubarlow It's hard to tell without seeing it, but I find that--for reasons I don't understand-- sometimes the engines take several runs to "break in." In between runs, shake out the water very thoroughly because if it has too much water it takes to long to heat, so it's sluggish and doesn't make much noise. Finally, sometimes the engines make more sound after going a minute or two--perhaps because gases in the water come out of solution and push out some of the excess water.

    Slater

  • Bangladesh, am from there

  • @downtownboy99 Bangladesh is a beautiful country and its people are brilliant.

    Slater

  • What's the principle behind this???

  • @Rajan14NowPlaying If you open up the rest of the YouTube text box, at the bottom, there is a link to how it works.

    Slater

  • yaaa good question how does it make sound

  • @GhufranMr The pulsing in and out of the water pushes the metal in and out, which make the engine sound. You can see it in part 2, the second part of the introduction.

    Slater

  • how does it make that sound

  • cool

  • i wonder if i could make a pop pop boat with 4 engins >x<

  • had a diagram of a pop pop boat in a kids science book that i had from the the 1950s

  • lol at the girl at 0:39 in the blue band shes like what do i do

  • hey i dont kno what these things are but i like them....what are the engines...just the heat going thro the can to the straw and does that mak c02 or something and moves it ????

  • @rednecktrapper13 steam power

  • kool

  • do you have to use the epoxy glue

  • thank you so much dude

  • thank you for the instructions! I really Love this boats. i have two videos out if you want to see them..

  • @MrRazmushenriksson I saw one video--very fast! Good job. Feel free to made as a video response.

    Slater

  • thank you for teaching about these and how to make them they r great toy boats

  • hello!i had one wen i was kid, i buy it in one place and never found someone selling it again, it was lie the one you show at 9:00. How do you do the engine you show at 7:oo? witch material?how do you work that material?i want one!thaks

  • oh gosh i just got home from school and now im back in social studies...nice vid

  • TNX

  • did you use epoxy adhesive? because this epoxy adhesive i have is color brown not transparent like the one in the video. i'm kinda unsure to the one i have. i can't continue my project. can i use it? THANKS!

  • @jeune000 Yes, I used epoxy. It comes in various colors. You don't have to use the 5 minute kind, but you will have to wait longer for it to harden.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker ever thought of a degine with a second boiler? might move faster

  • @sciencetoymaker i have a question.... instead of one of those cardboard like milk cartons could you use a plastic carton or would it not work?

  • @boberto322 If you take the time to design it well it might work.

    Slater

  • Thanks man I now have 2 of these pop pop boat moters and custum boats and I order

    Som from buzzboats

  • these putt putt boats make a lot of sound

  • @MsCinnabuns Yes, the kind with a flexible diaphragm makes noise. The coiled copper tube kind propels but does not make noise.

    Slater

  • I used your videos to make a science project in class! Your videos helped a lot!

  • i have subscribed.

  • Amazing!

  • thank you so much i had one of these boats as a kid an i loved.

i'v just finished making my own boat with your videos.

i attached a video so you can see. thanks agen:)

  • @lexthegoose I saw (and heard it)! Great work.

    Slater

  • Thank you for this video. I will continue to watch the rest and eventually build my own pop pop boat. Since I have first seen them in the movie Ponyo, I have wondered if one could be made big enough to ride in. I know it would take quite a bit of heat to run the engine but I think it would be awesome and fun if it were possible. Again, thanks for the very informative video.

  • @phrysk I added a link to a page that addresses the challenge of scaling the engine bigger, in the text box of the YouTube video. I don't seem to be able to put links in these comments.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker Cool Thanks

  • what else can you use to seal it cant you just make a simplerdesign,it seems really hard

  • @lolpimpicp Yep, it can be frustrating trying to seal. I tried to make it as easy as I could, but sometimes worthwhile things are difficult. How many people do you know who have made a steam engine?

I have not experimented much with super glue because I am afraid my students would get it in eyes. Perhaps you can develop that method or some other simpler one. I assure you, I'm not very smart at inventing. I just made hundreds, too dumb to stop wasting my time. Eventually they worked.

    Slater

  • LOL

  • thanks man, with your help i can easily make a pop pop engine.Everything is well explained in your videos.

  • I have learned that a hot glue gun will NOT work, because the glue get hot when you put it on the moter and when you use the liter or candle it heats up the glue AGAIN and then it leaks/runs off! learned the hard way.

  • @sneakysnakepie1 Yep, I too made an engine using hot glue only--just for fun, to see what would happen. It did run well for bit, but as it heated up more--as you said--the glue started rolling off and steam leaks bubbled in where the glue sealed the engine.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker yeah same. i watched a video on how to make it and then guessed for how to make the motor... i didnt think about how hot glue melts when it gets hot.

  • the guys voice in this video is creepy

  • @joecool593 I have a neurological condition that weakens my muscles, including those used for speech. Despite this, I use my time to work hard to develop projects, then make them freely available to people around the world. You are using your time to make comments about how creepy my voice sounds. Use your time on this planet to do something productive, kid.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker

    Mr. Slater:

Oddly, I found your voice particularly soothing in the video and you do a wonderful job narrating. I appreciate all you do to foster love for science in children and your willingness to share this online. We use a lot of your projects, and your love for science and educating children comes through in every video. Thank you for being a true educator... if the education system had more people like you, we would produce so many more engineers!

  • Hey, I did it with my pupils and most of them succeded!

    Thanks for video tutorials, congrats

  • well done, great video.

  • i love amkin these

  • As long as you can build the simple steam engine, then the boat itself can be made of anything that floats, is water proof and and NOT flammable. Orange juice carton or Styrofoam would also do i think.

  • WOW! does it work?

  • thanks for the instructions i got mine to work i was so happy i did not use apoxy i used this super glue type stuff instead

  • can you use other materials than epoxy ... because epoxy is pretty damn toxic!

  • @REZQtheDJ Well, it's not as though we are eating the epoxy. But I am experimenting with a combination of super glue, and silicone to seal it. It works, but it takes forever for the silicone to dry.

    Slater

  • @sciencetoymaker How about a hot glue gun?

  • dont trust wikepideia. how can i know that all the facts of the history of

    pop pop/putt putt boats.

  • @train2589 Perhaps you can do some research from trusted sources and let us know what you find?

    Slater

  • dang whatever school this is i want to go to it, man what fun projects

  • awsome job! we are going to try to make a really large one. but first a little one to test.

  • @Humorl00s There's lots of information about scaling up in the yahoo pop pop group's archives.

    slater

  • hey i made my first one for the scence fair can you chek it out and tell me if i did good :)

  • @D12913m Good work! Feel free to make it as a "video response."

    Slater

  • thank you : )

  • i want one so bad im gonna make one once i get a can

  • if only you could steer them at long distences

  • @sk8ter4life1117 Actually, people in the pop pop international group are making radio controlled boats.

    Slater

  • how does that work?

  • I can't add links to these comments, but there is an explanation of the cycle at sciencetoymakerDOTorg

    Slater

  • @Mr41432 i think its the heat cuz when the heat rises from the candle it touches the can thingy and (it pushes the heat backwards/the heat pushes the can forward) and the can thingy is attached to the boat aka the boat pushes forward to

  • @Dawid4Real not thew heat, is the stean from the heat. You need to fill with water one of the straws, and then when the water begins to get hot, it produces steam

  • I can't find cheap epoxy(most 75$ for 1.5L) , did anyone tried with something else???

  • One and a half litres of epoxy is enough for hundreds of engines. Go to Part 3 at 2:16 to see the small retail size available in hardware stores.

    Slater

  • check my pop pop boat out

  • can i use some othe glue or i need to use epoxy????

  • Follow directions exactly the first time, then experiment with things like different glue after you have one that works.

  • this is how im going to get to florida exept it will be 64:64 instead of 1:64

  • lol ok

  • thx for posting this vid up!! i am so doing this for the science fair! :D

  • looolll:)) if it caches on fire it's on water looolll:))

  • do you have to use expoxy glue could u used super glue

  • hot glue would remelt by the heating aluminum can epoxy prevents straws from melting and the glue from melting

  • wat if the boats catch on fire?

  • If you follow directions, it will not catch on fire.

    Slater

  • if it does happen just slam the boat into the water

  • WOW!! it is a good science project that you can use in the science fair!!

    your videos are cool!!!

  • Such happy memories. I had two of these in Dacca, Bangladesh . I lived there as a young kid in the early eighties. My favorite of the few toys during the monsoon. Many thanks!

  • I had one of these whin I was a kid about 5 years old. 1948/1949.

Thank you;; Thank you. For this video.

  • It's great to see the originals are comming back! I just saw one of these in a movie "Ponyo". I was so fancinated!! I plan to make my own!! Now, does a candy tin sound good for a engine?

  • Thanks for letting me know about pop pops in the latest Miyazaki movie.

It's best to follow the directions exactly (aluminum drink can) the first time through, then experiment with variations like candy tins, etc.

    Slater

  • does this fall under a "steam boat" ?

because i must do it for a science project

  • Yes, it is a real steam engine, albeit a simple one.

    Slater

  • I really want to thank you for being kind enough to do all these videos!! I made 1 too i hope you `ll see it!! Plz comment and subscribe! Thank you for everything!!!!!

  • Well done, Nicoloist, on your video response, and you might get even more power and sound if you adjust the angle.

    Slater

  • Heey men!

I made it 3 times, the first 2 didnt work but that might be my failure (sorry for my bad english) The 3th worked great! Its very funny. I am now thinking of a other creation with this steam-engine. So if you got nice idea's of other creation's with this cind off engines ill hear it. Thanks!

  • The pop pop engine is an exacting project with unfamiliar procedures, so it can take more than one attempt. Good for you for persisting until it worked! There is a world-wide forum about pop pop boat experiments, linked in the blue information box to the right. Also, there are more DIY science projects at sciencetoymakerDOTorg (I cant put links in this comments section).

    Slater

  • hey, yesterday on the 14th of august i made one of these motors with the istructions of your video. they work great. after i was done with the first one i made a second one and integrated them into a dual engine compartment. thanks for the help.

  • Glad to hear it's working well. Duel engine compartment sounds interesting--consider a video response.

    Slater

  • where can you get the pop pop-putt putt motors at ive made many off these videos 5 to be exact. i love the motors

  • I'm not sure I understand your question, but you you can make your own by following the directions of the rest of the video. Or you can buy ones imported from India and China. Just Google pop pop engine.

    Slater

  • all the engines ive made from the vids dont work im not saying there bad videos there awsome but i want to study the engine more and get more ideas. i will still watch your vids.

  • Thank you for this informative video! I'd heard of putt-putt boats but had no idea their design was so clever until I saw one in a movie. (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) It seems like simple and clever designs like this are always in danger of falling out of style and being missed by whole generations! I'm glad this one didn't slip past me.

  • Thanks for the feedback. There are other clever DIY science projects at sciencetoymakerDOTorg (can't put URLs on these messages).

    Slater

  • Could you use aluminum foil for the motor? I don't see why you can't but I'm just asking. lol. I don't drink pop so yeah. lol

  • how did you make the pop pop engine

  • I cannot put links in text comments, but all the video links are at sciencetoymakerDOTorg

    Slater

  • these r awesome

  • does it have to be bendy straws

  • yes

  • can i use Aluminium for the Heating point rather then i use tin can for the heat point

  • The engine is designed for aluminum. Steel is harder to work with, and stiffer, so I don't think it would work.

  • i dont get it

  • you make it so simple other people take like 3 vids and they this and thats just the engine then they make tthe body you make it very simple and short

  • your the best instructor you make it into really easy steps good job..

  • Me and some friends each just built one today. Works perfectly (the most difficult part for me, was coming up with a nice boat design to put the engine on).

Very good, detailed instructions and videos. You must have spent ages coming up with the design and reducing it to such simple steps. I must agree with the "BrainDead", you are a great teacher!

(by the way: "tea candles" work just fine, too, you can just add a second candle if the boat runs too slowly)!

  • Just finished making my own with the simple styrofoam boat. Works great! Thanks for the great instructions and the hard work figuring out the design and materials.

  • Hey dude your a great teacher.

  • Thanks for the encouraging words!

    Slater

  • just wondering. But has a bigger version ever been made? And what is the biggest one? Also, could they make this full size. Think about the energy they could save. But probabably it'd be really slow

  • Great video 5 stars, thanks!

I'm also wondering if there are bigger versions of this engines... can people travel in pop pop boats, for example?

  • Yes, see the coment above about the pop pop Yahoo users group linked at sciencetoymaker. They have a good archive.

  • Yes. Check out the Yahoo users group linked after step 26.

  • wow! they are so cool! my friends dad has a steam engine (much like a train) made from a mecano base and other scrap metal. it doesnt use olive oil it uses cotton buds coated in methylated spirits.

  • what is the green thing in 1: 25 to 1 :38

  • re: the green thing: Yes, it's a cut off candle that fits under the engine. I was trying to give an overview of all the steps. It's covered in detail in a later step.

    Slater

  • i want "sciencetoymaker" to show himself in a new vid as he talks in all his other vids about this project but does not show him self .LOL> LOL>LOLO>LOL>LOL> :-)

  • hey i used to go to a school call ed st. thomas more aka STM =] good job 2

  • i dont get it...can u show a more detail video on how to make it

  • when you put the engine in the boat do you glue it in

  • re: gluing the engine in or not. It depends what kind of boat hull you use. Rubber bands hold the engine onto the simple foam boat. But you have to glue it into the cardboard hull from a milk carton. Actually, you don't have to glue it as long as you keep water from entering the hole in the bottom.

  • can we use normal glue, and it just bobble in my boat!!!

  • Hot glue will not work, for obvious reasons. 5 minute epoxy has the advantage of hardening quickly. Other high quality glue might work, but I suggest you stick to the directions exactly for your first engine.

  • did you try the hot glue? are you shure it wont work?

  • Again, totally excellent. Great video and research.

  • Excellant Job On This Video, You have your research done on this one. 5 stars
