great loco...just amazing....SMS railroad has a baldwin AS616...its also a six axle unit and it sounds alot louder then this one..even when its idleing...great vid keep up the awsome work
@onrr1726 You should visit again if you get the chance. We have made wonderful improvements. The people from Geneva are Dave & Janet. Their car is the Federal. They park it there a lot. Got to ride in her last year. Amazing trip.
@redmus1959 I'll have to stop out again my grandfather lives out in Masa, AZ. I did get a number of photos of some of the equipment at the musuem when I stoped by that was around Febuary 2000. Are there any outher new items or cars aded to the collection sents then?
@onrr1726 Absolutely! We now have a diner, dome car, wood side box car and the 405 Superintendents car which was days from being scrapped to 98% restored
And I think Nordberg took this design and made a "V" application in their "Superairthermal" engines after Baldwin got out of the market in the early sixties-late fifties.
It's at the Travel Town museum. here in LA. If the bore was in danger of glazing, it's probably already glazed. Don't get me wrong, it pulls a few cars, but we have limited track and a 10mph limit.
Load banks are massive resistors that dissipate large amounts of electricity.
That's one way to load test it. this one as well as ours has the dynamic brake grids on the back, so it's already got a load bank behind those big screens, they are just wired to the traction motors, not the generators.
De La Vergne prime movers were exclusively used in Baldwins and in marine applications as well. I should have said that Baldwin didn't design thier own prime movers. Anyway, I grew up in Essington, Pa. about three miles away from the Baldwin plant in Eddystone.
Baldwin did not design the De La Vergne engines, however they did do the design modifications to the cylinder heads that turned them into the Baldwin 600 Series engines.
Most firms don't design all the parts for a product themselves, but they do design the assembly that turns those piles of parts into something useful.
Nobody ever really designed a Diesel engine all by themselves, except Dr Rudolf Diesel, But even he used various design ideas from people before him.
This is the only place I have seen anAS416. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this!

This unit is a DRS-66-1500 not an AS416. Built for McCloud River and then sold to Magma Arizona.
northgacub 3 years ago
You're right, all our bad, I just checked again, and it was indeed a DRS-6-6-1500. The McCloud 34 was the AS616.

Looks like a really old locomotive to me. Most cars of that age with mostly original paint don't look too great either.
cwr56 2 years ago 5
where is this locomotive located?
amtraklover 3 years ago
Arizona.
cwr56 2 years ago
@amtraklover She is located at the Arizona Railway Museum 330 E. Ryan Rd. Chandler AZ. She still runs but it rains diesel dots when she does.

@redmus1959 I'm been to that musem was there 11 years ago et some people who moved out there from Geneva, NY that store a passenger car there.

just curious, AS416? 1600hp, got it. But, 4? Looks like 3 axle trucks to me. That would make it an AS616, right? Unless the trucks are A-1-A.

Why the hell couldn't any of the EJ&E's Baldwins survive to this day? O.o

Nice Baldwin vid, Tyler.

Looks like an AS616 to me. Ex McCloud for sure. Magma Arizona now.
I work on the Ex McCloud 33 RS12. she has just as smokey a startup.

Is an rs12 similar to rs11?
would that be a v12?
tpvalley 4 years ago
No, the RS11 is an Alco unit. RS12 stands for Road Switcher, 1200 Horsepower.
It looks like an S12, but it has a short hood behind it to house the dynamic brake grids.
It's got a Baldwin 606A, 6 cylinder inline turbocharged Diesel, with a 12 3/4" bore and 15 1/2" stroke.
cwr56 4 years ago
Baldwin exclusively used marine type engines built by De La Vergne. They had 6 and 8 cylinder models, turbo, and, non turbo.
railbum 4 years ago
No, an in-line eight four cycle with turbo. Medium speed, around 400-500 RPM's
choirboyfromhell 4 years ago
Yeah your right, sorry.
flamerail 4 years ago
almost, they rev to about 600-700rpm.
Theres a site on the web; baldwinzone or something.
Biggest bore and stroke diesel I ever saw in a loco.
tpvalley 4 years ago
And I think Nordberg took this design and made a "V" application in their "Superairthermal" engines after Baldwin got out of the market in the early sixties-late fifties.
choirboyfromhell 4 years ago
Did u ever see one of those radial nordberg diesels? wierd!
Never seen a nordberg running.
tpvalley 4 years ago
Never saw (and vaguely remember in old Diesel Power Books) the radials. Just familiar w/ a couple of V types in Great Lakes Marine service.
choirboyfromhell 4 years ago
Google nordberg, even has a cross section of the radials! 2 stroke loop scavenge!!
tpvalley 4 years ago
Information taken from Baldwin Diesel Manual DE-111:
Rpm at rated power; 625
Rpm at idle; 315
Bore; 12 3/4"
Stroke; 15 1/2"
Firing order, 6 cyl; 124653
8 cyl; 14768523
website is the Baldwin Diesel Zone. you will find some of my contributions there.
cwr56 4 years ago
Thanks, I someone said max rpm was 400-500 rpm.
Baldwin diesel zone was the site I was trying to remember!
If it wasn't for internet I would never have heard one of these runing, I have yet to hear one on full power under load, any videos?
tpvalley 4 years ago
I hear one of these running all the time.
cwr56 4 years ago
U must make some videos!!
Do it now!
lol..
tpvalley 4 years ago
we never take it to full power. My suggestion, look for a video "McCloud River Railroad, the early Baldwin Diesels".
16 mm film footage with sound of ours, and the one in this video as they entered service in 1955.
cwr56 4 years ago
Shame u never take it to full power, speed limits? never a full length train?
Careful of bore glazing!
tpvalley 4 years ago
Both. 10mph speed limit, and never more than 5 cars. we do throttle up good at times, just not while in motion.
cwr56 4 years ago
Revving up under no load will not prevent bore glazing, engine must be loaded.
Still I dont imagine it will matter on this?
Some engines get slower and harder to start if not thrashed every now and then, a good thrashing can fix it though!!
Is this a preserved railway?
tpvalley 4 years ago
It's at the Travel Town museum. here in LA. If the bore was in danger of glazing, it's probably already glazed. Don't get me wrong, it pulls a few cars, but we have limited track and a 10mph limit.

I saw a loco on a "load bank" whatever that is?
They were measuring engine power with locos generator plugged into something, have u seen them things?
I think baldwin diesel were used as power sources in big buildings, these run at half load for years. Should be fine.
Ive never seen one of these in the flesh, I live in UK, love usa locos.
tpvalley 4 years ago
Load banks are massive resistors that dissipate large amounts of electricity.
That's one way to load test it. this one as well as ours has the dynamic brake grids on the back, so it's already got a load bank behind those big screens, they are just wired to the traction motors, not the generators.
cwr56 4 years ago
Thats what I guessed, an electric dynamometre.
I'd like to see an old baldwin VO engine running, ever seen one? indirect prechamber injection.
tpvalley 4 years ago
Baldwin never manufactured thier own prime movers.
railbum 3 years ago
yes they did, in collusion with other firms.
one example is the baldwin VO engine.
see baldwin diesel zone on google etc.
tpvalley 3 years ago
De La Vergne prime movers were exclusively used in Baldwins and in marine applications as well. I should have said that Baldwin didn't design thier own prime movers. Anyway, I grew up in Essington, Pa. about three miles away from the Baldwin plant in Eddystone.

cwr56 2 years ago
Nah, Standard V
flamerail 4 years ago
do baldwin locomotives have opposed piston engines?
amtraklover 4 years ago
No, Depending on the horsepower rating, most had a 6 or 8 cylinder inline, that was either turbocharged or not.
The AS616 has an 8 cylinder turbocharged engine, Baldwin model 608A.
All 600 series engines had a 12.75 inch bore, and 15.5 inch stroke.
If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. I work on a Baldwin Diesel.
cwr56 2 years ago 3
Didn't Baldwin sign a contract with westinghouse electric for parts. What type of Baldwin diesel do you work on by the way?
Jared1452 1 year ago
Yes, Baldwin had a contract with Westinghouse. Earlier, they contracted General Electric.
I work on an RS-12.
