  • Great sound! :D

  • I had one of these. The sound here is what the 880 sounded like. The hi end was EXTREMELY excited. I got rid of it for a JV-1080, but the 1080 never quite had the presence of this module. Beware though - this one is frustrating to edit on - you can only access HALF the sounds of an expansion board at one time. Serious design flaw.

  • @audiotrax2000 Would trying to find a JV-90 be a good route to get sounds of a JV-880 AND have a decent MIDI controller to boot?

A lot of the sounds in the 880 I recognize from the JV-1080: probably one of my most favourite modules around. It has the coolest screen ever, the blue and yellow ;)

  • @raymangold22: in short - yes :) I've thought about getting one too.

  • @owen320 You can't record sound via MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). MIDI sends digital information such as note on/off, CC changes for parameters, sysex programming, etc. To get sounds from your JV-880 into a laptop you need to run the audio-out from the sound module into an audio-in on your Laptop. This is usually accomplished by adding an audio input device to your computer.

  • I have the JV-80 and JV-880 as well as a Fantom X6 and many other Rolands, the JV-80/880 have stood the test of time for Keys and strings/woods/brass. Rock guitars forget it, but is has some close acoustic ones. Funny these sounds are what 20 years old and still sound good as well as you can pick up a JV-880 all day for about $100 bucks when mine was like $1200 or so in the day :)

  • I love that classic sounds, but how did you get that fantastic warm big sound ? can you tell me more about effect that used or proccesed to get that rich sound ?

  • @Peteraardz What "fantastic warm big sound" are you referrring to? All sounds are coming directly out of the JV-880 (Demo Songs)

  • @zibbybone yes the demos sounds good today and sounding huge warm if compare to Roland XR rack?

  • @Peteraardz I do not understand what you are asking. The JV-80/880 were the 1st synths in the JV series. The XP/XV series expanded on the JV series and the Fantom series expanded on the XP/XV series. The XR is part of the Fantom (X) series.

  • @zibbybone Do you have anywhere posted the crystal rhodes patch that you can hear in many 80's and 90's songs.?

  • @Peteraardz That's the natural sound of the JV-880. That sound is why the entire series was one of the most sought-after synth workstations of all time.

Still, they haven't quite mastered real brass sounds. I have yet to hear a sample playback synth whose brass sounds don't give it away as something other than real brass. But as far as everything else, this is a hard box to beat.

  • @owen320 you do understand what MIDI is? you can play sounds on it with the MIDI output of your computer, but transfering sounds as audio to a DAW is a totally different process and is more akin to the audio field than to the MIDI field, please explain what you want to do, so we can help you.

  • love that slap bass

  • I have a JV-1080 and I use it for Strings and Pads live and it really stands out in the mix and it sounds quite warm

  • @darkriver29 for a module that was made in 1996

  • @darkriver29 1992

  • I Own this module and as a musician and engineer I still think that the JV SERIES KEYBOARDS ESPECIALLY THE JV 1000 ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

THE 2080 IS STILL USED IN OUR STUDIOS TODAY AND HAS SAVED OUR BUTTS IN MANY SESSIONS ESPECIALLY THE BRASS.

As far as cheesy, well you can tweak any sound to become fuller by layering baby so dont pay to much attention to the last guys comments.

2080 CAN HOLD ITS OWN I GUARANTEE IT,,LIKE THE GUY FROM MENS WAREHOUSE SAYS.

  • the sound of giutar sucks! I like sampling real sound not like this but by the way, the sax was good!

  • I got a Roland JV 1080 at the end of February and it's one of the best synths I have ever used, I also have a Roland groovebox, the JV 1080 and the groovebox are the best synths I have ever used and I can't imagine what could be better, I''m even going to buy expansion boards for it but I'm not desperate, I'm eying the orchestral and drum and bass expansion boards, but I really like the preset patches because there unique.

  • @Penguindog55 Oh you never told me you got a JV-1080! For me, the sounds are probably the most DIRECT in terms of sonics. Like, you can immediately get something with punch.

The expansion cards I [plan] on getting are: Orchestral #1, Vintage Synth, Asia, and Vocal Collection.

  • @raymangold22 I never bought the expansion boards in the end, but the JV-1080 is still one of the best synths I have ever used.

  • i love the drum snare sound from the 80's on this machine lol

  • Demo Wars!! Kind of 80s AOR, LA musos, big hair and shoulder pads condensed into a single box. Just great for Steely Dan tribute bands?

Mmm... So why can't we have a 1940s in a box with Ellington orchestrations and Charlie Parker sax, or 50s in a box with Sun Studio drum sounds and Elvis mic vocals - or even Joe Meek in a box with that Telstar organ sound next to the Honeycombs' guitar? sound. Better again, punk in a box. Best of all plug in yourself and make your own music....

  • I bet this sounded impressive back in the early 90's when it was released, because it still sounds "bearable". In a cheesy, ROMpler demo kind of way.

  • The JV synths still are impressive, infact there better than some of todays keyboards

  • This demo would've been great 25 years ago

  • not one fat lead sound - fucking demo songs

  • I'm still waiting until I have enough money to buy a JV 1080 or 2080 off Ebay and I hope by the time I have enough money there will be one and I win but if not I'm still not giving up, I'll wait forever if I have to even if recordings get put on hold but waiting will pay off in the end.

  • I use this paired with a JV-1080 to create layers in live situations. Great module!!

  • Why are Roland demos always so shite?

  • Noizy4:The demos might sound shite to you if you are in to dance music in which case you would be looking at a different synth. These have to appeal to a wide range of players from amateur up to pro level. You also need to factor in the time this module was released. How would you demo it any better if you wanted to shift units?

  • the jv 880 was 1 of my top synths. i loved the steel strings, n made some cool ambi synth sounds with it. was easy to programe too. made some good tunes with just using the jv bass station ans S.2000

  • Hi, I used to have one of these too. Just get a JV-1080 instead they are compatible and the sounds can be converted by sysex. plus it's much more expandable and doesn't wipe your internal memory when using sounds from the expansion cards; the main flaw in the JV-880. Sitll has lovely sounds though.

  • mine doesn't do that and I'm still using it!

  • OMG!!! I remember when I used to own one of these modules. I used to love using this module because of the sounds that it produced. I miss this unit the most out of all the units I owned.

  • still usin' mine.

  • Cool, but you don't have to rub it in..........LOL!!! Hey just kidding, I think I will have to go out and get another one of these modules soon. They are easy to find on Ebay.
