I found this stuff at Cracker Barrel yesterday! I bought the banana one, but the only other one they had was vanilla. No chocolate or strawberry. :-( Maybe somewhere else.
"THE MAGIC CLOWN" was a 15 minute Sunday morning show Bonomo's sponsored on NBC from 1949 through '54, featuring "Zovella", a clown that could perform magic tricks as well.
@firelilly08 Thank you so much ...Nothing taste like it...have had some try to make the taffy...Doesnt have that taste I miss......thank you for letting me know its still made...
This is such a moving tribute to Sonny Bono. And, no, no, he was not a "mo". Neither was Moe of The Three Stooges. But now that I think of it, this candy bar commercial honors both Sonny Bono and Three Stooge Moe, all in one and one for all.
Ellen Gordon, president of Tootsie Roll Industries, said that the company phased out the product when demand declined as tastes changed. What??? My Taste NEVER Changed! I'm Sure Glad They Changed Their Minds and Brought It Back To Us!! Ahhh The Memories:)
@reneesluse The dentists were getting so wealthy from Bonomo-destroyed teeth that they were upsetting the world's distribution of wealth. That's when the FDA was forced to put fluoride in the public water supply all over the world and Bonomo Turkish Taffy came back to our hungry lips.
The company sold 80 million to 100 million bars a year in the 50's and 60's and employed as many as 350 workers at the Coney Island plant, where it also produced hard candy. Bonomo's Turkish Taffy changed hands a few times, in 1980 becoming part of Tootsie Roll Industries of Chicago, which stopped making the candy in 1989.
Re the second ad: "Delish"? Now I know where Rachael Ray got that word. I remember Turkish Taffy from my childhood. My favorite flavor was vanilla, but I liked them all. At Halloween you could find them in soft chewy rolls as well (I got a few of those over the years in various Trick or Treat bags). David Letterman once did a "Top 10" list of "least popular snacks", and one of them was "Turkish Prison Taffy". Another one was "Good & Linty".
The circus clown commercial is the oldest of all of those seen on there, that one would most likely date from the Eisenhower era, while the other two would date from the JFK era.
@ep617: I'm afraid that Bonomo Turkish Taffy went the way of Mr. Salty Pretzel Sticks and Hoffman's Coca Cream Soda. (I think Sandy Becker took the last bar to Palisades Amusement Park.) But if you do a Google search for "Bonomo Turkish Taffy Substitute", that will lead you to French Chewy Taffy, that is almost identical. (You'll even find the recipe, to make it yourself.) Buy some, and do like my little sister and I did, put 'em in the fridge, for an hour, then smack 'em on the kitchen table!
@skeilak hey, Bonomo Turkish Taffy is back !!!! I was from Queens NYC and you mentioned Sandy Becker .so im thinking your a 50's/ 60's kid like i was.
Hey Mr Guru, please help. Nobody seems to recall commercials for Chopper toys, at the end of every commercial there would be a little animated centipede that would say in a Munchkin-like voice "Chopper always leaves you laughing, hahahahahaha" did I imagine this?
@njplr No need for Ira Gallen to get involved, I've got this one. That was "Schaper" (pronounced "shopper"). It was the company that originated the games "Cootie", "Don't Break The Ice" and "The Last Straw", among others. The ads always ended with a cartoon of the "Cootie" bug saying "Schaper always leaves you laughing - hahahahahaha!" You did not imagine it. It was a staple of Saturday morning cartoons and weekday afternoon cartoons as well in the late '60s and early '70s.
You know, I'm 25 years old, grew up in an age of bright shiny colors and fast ads, but I gotta say these old TV ads have a lot of charm. In a time just after radio where visuals were still new and companies were still exploring the untapped potential of the TV market, these advertisers were pretty slick. My dad used to tell me about how he remembered these old Bonomo's ads and I'm of a mind to jump back to 1960 and grab me a bar myself.
I loved it as a kid...it was a large treat for a little money..one time my brother and I decided to split it with one end in each of our mouths...surprising that we didn' t lose our teeth
@hebneh so i guess you ate what was in 2 girls and 1 cup and found that very yummy huh? behold the little brats in the background, that was your mom and dad
We weren't allowed to smack it on the table, we had to throw it on the sidewalk. Just think of the potential lawsuits now. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, little Jimmy deserves $50,000,000 because his sister smacked him on the head with Bonomo's Turkish Taffy.
How come when ever i cracked my bar of Bonomo Taffy it never came out like it did on TV. It always broke up into 3 or 4 pieces with about 50 little pieces around the edges. Look at the way it is on TV. Its perfect! Maybe the kid knows something i did not know : ))) Anyhoots Thanks for the great memorys of better days when life was much less difficult! : )))
I used to buy this in the 1960's , it tasted good, you got alot and it lasted a long time. But it stuck to your teeth like cement ! I remember eating dinner with some still stuck to my teeth, i now have only three of my original teeth, banana flavor was the best !
Like most of the post war candy in America, it wasn't good. But it was plenty. Kids wanted quantity. More was better. And the candy companies complied; Good & Plenty, Big Hunk.Sugar Daddy, ju ju b's, Dots and more sugar-starch-gum base concoctions guaranteed to not only rot your teeth but to also wreak havoc on newly acquired fillings. The "good ol' days!
im turkish and never heard about bonomo, WTF is that ??
