you have to change your glove when you touch the cv. if you touch the penis skin, you are not sterile. after you have touched the cv. in this way you can cause infection.
Now at 26 the right hand massages the urethra wile the left holds the pisser then at 56 the same right finger comes in contact with the catheter being pushed in. So why is it proper to use non contaminated glove at this point.
i thought you were not allowed to let go of the penis once you had it in your hand as that means that it is now the unsterile hand... and aren't you suppose to put the bag on the tube before you put the catheter in so you can check urine out put?? and then fill the balloon?? Good Vid tho!! thanks alot!!
The only way I would want that done would be if I was out like a light and there was no other option, otherwise I'll settle for a urinal or an external catheter thanks.
Believe me, when you can't go to toilet due to a stricture of the urethra and you have a bladder full of urine, it's an absolute god send to have a catheter fitted. It's uncomfortable when inserted yes, but the sheer sensation of being able to urinate far outweighs this!
Your technique is wrong,it seemed you were touching the catheter with your hand to speed its entry into the urethra, even though you were gloved you should insert the catheter with a no touch technique and use the outer covering to manipulate it in, anyway that said thanks 4 the vid
@captainamerica1965 You would't be hard dummy. These things tend to shrink when a tube is coming at them. It reminds me of a turtle pulling it's head in when it is scared. I have had it done, but I was numb from the knee replacement surgery I had just had. The nurse must have known I wouldn't feel it. She came straight out of the package with the catheter and straight into the very soft organ. She got one and a half litres of pee. It felt much better then.
An accident that left me unable to walk for some time. The Nurses were the best. They waited for time of day I received the most pain medication. My wife, God bless her warmed me up down there. The nurses warmed up the tube & used warm water to inflate the balloon.Removing the old one was uncomfortable, but they did it fast & smoothly. I couldn't feel the new one go in. My wife holding my hand & comforting me the entire time. I cant thank her enough.
The only good part about one is none-it hurts!. But, at least think if you're lucky enough to get a hot doctor/nurse of your fancy-ask if they can you no get you warmed up down there first to make it worth your while and help forget the pain and dis-comfort at hand. They could bill even insurance as: pre-urinary procedure enhanced genital pleasure. If they just give yo a look, just say it was the medication talking crazy. They might have the least attractive and rough person do it then.
lidocaine jel does nothing! I screamed during the procedure like a man getting his legs cut off with a chain saw. The most agony that I could ever imagine except maybe burning to death. Pure agony and don't believe anything else.
I severed my urethra of the prostate and ripped my bladder in half after my pelvis was crushed. I have had numerous foley and suprapubic catheters.....because I had a suprapubic for so long I devolped a golf ball size bladder stone. I will NEVER be catheterized again in any way. These fucked up primitive devises should only be use if there is no other option. They do more harm than good. If you can pass urine, don't get this done!
@flimflam0069 I work as a tireman, and one night i was called out to a rig site to change out some loader tires, jack slipped I was crushed. When my pelvis shattered it tore my bladder/urethra apart. I have since made a full recovery, pretty intense tho.
I had it done to me after surgery, and I was very glad I was still under anesthesia. I was assured that re-catheterization would be horrible. I have no doubt about that since removal was very painful. I'm a guy, btw.
It makes me cringe and curl up into a fetal position just thinking about it.
This comment is for you guys out there so you know what will happen when they shove that up your main "business".
Hopefully, you will be blessed, and this will never happen to you.
This is the ONE clinical procedure that makes me cringe, cry, and writhe around in pain....and I'm not even a GUY!
For some reason, the thought of inserting something into a penis, or vagina, seems so wrong and painful and messed up, I don;t know how I am going to overcome it and pass the clinical.
you won't feel a thing tell your pt this is gonna hurt you alot more than it hurts me lol seriously the first foley insertion is the scariest the nice thing about nursing school is hitting the urethra on a female isn't that important you can stick a foley up someones nose and it's ok as long as you maintain proper sterile technique
well i cath 3 times a day since i have chronic kidney disease, having diabetes doesn't help either with the kidneys. there are different sizes of foley catheters. i use a size 12 catheter since i have a small penis itself. just make sure the doctor gives you the right size catheter for the size of your penis. i have no problem with getting the catheter into my penis and all the way into my bladder. i use a child size catheter.
i am apprehensive about it, i am soon going to be on the receiving end of it... i never felt anything when i was doing it to the patients.. now that i have to face it, i feel numb already, think i will ask them so that they let me do it to myself...hey, is that possible?
The nurse or whoever could teach you, if you are going to have 'intermitant catheters'. It is uncomfortable, apart from self harmers and IV drug addicts...it is difficult inflicting pain on youself. It's not always straight forward plumbing
I have to use both intermittant catheters and Foley catheters. With self catheterisation it only stings the first few times you do it,there is no real "pain" as such, your urethra with sting afterwards but it soon settles down, after you have done it a few times it becomes second nature and because the urethra becomes acustom to it,it doesnt even sting. There is nothing to be worried about. If your having a foley inserted for the first time,it will only sting slightly,no pain using lidocaine lube too
I rather wear a diaper. I was in the ER once from a accident I been in. they were working on me and had to go. Catheterisation hurts to me. didn't like it. I was having surgury and felt pain from it. I wanted to wear a diaper in the recovery room.
I'm sure that song could be slowed and "stan" (Eminem) could be layed over!
Any ways,I have been on the recieving end of a catheter over 5 times(lost count after5) and I honestly believe all nurses should go through it to understand just how delicate it is! My last one,was done by an 'overenthusiastic' Male nurse,it was like he was trying togive a gastric lavage to a snake! his gloves were slippery as thats where the gel went and I thought I was being punished for being brought in late!
M8, what happened to the change of gloves after you cleaned the meatus???? or at the very least don 2 pairs of gloves then remove the top pair when you are ready to insert
Qualified nurses get trained within hospitals. It is not just a manual procedure; you must why you're it and what to do if you come across difficulties.
However, it is pretty easy compared to many other medical procedures.
Some comments on here are forgetting that different countries have different guidelines.
This video follows The Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures (Royal Marsden Nhs Trust)...the UK national guide.
I do concede that I should have retracted and handled the foreskin and penis with a swab, so when I tiered the wrapper open my left hand shouldn't have touched the sterile wrapper.
However, I have done over 1000 catheterisations, it is classed as sterile/clean procedure rather than aseptic.
u should've not not touch by your dominant hand or avoid your dominant hand which is your sterile side to touch the glands penis i guess.. cause you're contaminating the catheter tube..
wow, you boys sure are touchy about this subject...quit fussing, it's for your own good. We medical students never get to learn to do fun stuff like this...
Sometimes it is necessary but on the other hand, it is being done out of convenience more and more in hospitals throughout the United States. Too many female nurses that are man haters get off on this and purposely cause the man undue pain and discomfort. If the same thing happened to them, they might have a different outlook. Privacy and dignity of the patients are also compromised which is totally wrong. It's not always necessary during surgery like everyone is told. It's total bullshit!!!!!!!
Well anyone will always have the right to refuse this procedure but if for some medical reason you are unable to urinate on your own you won't have any other choice , like after my hernia surgery when I attempted to urinate the slightest push to get it started felt like a blow torch. When the nurse walked in smiling and said don't worry hun I'll empty you out I knew I was in for it LOL but it was either that or become toxic and die.
I understand what you're saying and in that particular case it was very necessary. However: it is being done out of convenience for the staff regardless of the fact that it isn't necessary for the patient. I don't take any of this lightly and please don't think i do. I work in the medical field and i've seen alot of unnecessary procedures performed. Also, i've seen nurses purposely snatch the catheter out without deflating the balloon causing severe pain to the patients. I live in NC. You?
Oh so It's just convenient for the nurses to cath the patients who are tied to their beds for one reason or another so they can avoid having to go , lift them and hold them up while they urinate. I won't say that I was screaming in pain when it was done to me but none the less it isn't the kindest procedure and I agree with you. I blame the doctors for this because they should only order them when absolutely necessary. A 25 year old in bed who just had knee surgery doesn't need a catheter.
I'm sorry, but I'm just astounded at the conclusions you're jumping to here. The medical personnel who is devoting their time to treating you is supposedly being malicious? And this is because they 'hate men' no less? You certainly have this whole thing figured out, haven't you. Just because a procedure is embarrassing or uncomfortable for the patient doesn't mean it's done out of 'hatred.'
i've had one inserted before and believe me i would rather go through the one minute of discomfort than one second of the agony i felt on my bladder before it.
The chaps I used to do this too said it 'smarted' when it was inserted, I must have been pretty good, as when I had one and it was removed it more than 'smarted'.
when u are old and in urinary retention and your bladder is bursting, you will prey that us nurses put one in to relieve your pain and relieve you from not being able to pee. Its a nursing skill and we do it for a reason !!!
My take on this is that if you can't be taught in 5 minutes in how to do this properly, there may be something wrong with you. Even doing a simple ABG stick requires more skill than inserting a Foley. It is one of the easiest procedures with little pressure on the provider. If you are having problems doing it, it is YOU who needs the refresher, not me.
The procedure itself is easy, you bet, but keeping a sterile environment while doing it is a skill you develop over time. You can teach the concepts in a relatively short time, but the end result will be pretty sloppy if it's just a 5 minute lesson.
Not to mention, the person might not even know why they're inserting it and may end up blindly following incorrect orders from RNs or physicians.
Maybe it's just a clean procedure where you are and not a sterile one...
I don't know where you are from, but here in the USA, inserting a Foley is ordered ONLY by a physician, never a nurse. Nurses, on the other hand, are the ones who do the actual procedure at the order of the MD. Further, any invasive procedure done here is done with a sterile technique.
I was probably thinking in the instance of a standing order re: the RN. LPN and RNs can both insert here, but depending on the facility, an LPN may need to check with an RN (team leader) before inserting with a standing order.
i'm sorry, but foleys look barbaric to me. To me it would be like shoving an extension cord down there, fortunately i have never had to have a foley, and i pray to GOD i never do.
This is not correct.

Where was that TOUGHT...as it is completley WRONG
Ninnisworld2901 9 months ago
This is completely wrong.
There's no way you have your instruments to be sterile like that and lay down on your sterile sheet.
Your blister aint sterile and when you put in a catheter you must always have at least 1 hand sterile.
In this vid you de-sterilise both your hands multiple times.
The beginning was ok, but when you open the case of the catheter with both hands, you de-sterilise it with your right hand.
Now this is how people get infections !
