  • To every idiot,

The coal is not and never was on fire. It is the peat and everything else that would turn into coal. Coal requires too much oxygen to burn. I ask people that visit the vents why they think the coal is burning and I ask them one question if you thought the coal was burning why would they be deep mining the south side of rt. 61 and surface mining the north side from Centralia to the Mount Carmel. And my pop was one of the first ones to try to put out the garbage/coal fire.

    Rod

  • should explode a low yield maybe 1 megaton nuclear bomb under ground to snuff out the coal fires

  • I was just there a couple days ago. It seems that the smoke is much more apparent during the winter, because we could barely see the gases coming out of rt 61. I almost don't want them to extinguish the fire because I find this place to be so fascinating the way it is now.

  • wer auch wegen galileo big picture schaut daumen hoch :D

  • really cool little movie. nice.

  • i've been wondering, what would happen if an earthquake like that of Japan would hit Centralia? Would it cause the veins underground to collapse and snuff the flame?

  • @SuPaFlY171989 naw probally make it burn hotter it would add O2.

  • I am sure no snow lays there in the winter !!!

  • The government had no intention of trying to dig out or extinguish this fire. The last quote to dig it out was over 600 million dollars. It is burning now for fifty years and expected to burn perhaps a thousand years. No, they will never dig it out.

  • Totally wrong. The government bought the homes and paid to move those who lived there so they will NOT have to try and dig out the fire. The cost to dig it out was estimated at over $600 MILLION and the buy out was $50 million. The fire is expected to burn for up to one thousand years with all the coal under the ground. It will not be dug out.

  • I'm going to live there someday I don't care what anybody says :P

  • coal burning is the number one cause of mercury polution....look it up..this is the most toxic town in north america...and u play here..people were upset of the gulf oil spill..this is no differant then 3 mi island or chernobl...GET OUT u fools

  • it would be funny as hell if in the background the crack just opened and that person fell in

  • I have an idea. Make electricity form the heat. Solved.

  • That looks like so much fun i love exploring things i wish i had things like this and other things like it near where i live

  • Just watched the Silent Hill movie. Great movie!

  • her name is heather...coincidence...NO

  • the first girl they interview is a complete idiot. The government is buying up the land so they can dig out the fire to extinguish it. this will work, but its so dangerous that they cannot do this with still a few inhabitants left in the borough. the vein runs down to ashland and the reason the government is concerned is because the fire in time could spread to the neighboring town. We do know how the fire was started contrary to what she says.

  • @crashdaparty Well she was the only one around at the time willing to talk to us that lived in the area....Thanks for the update.

  • @crashdaparty Why do people like you think it's okay to be complete jerks online? You could have said all of that without being insulting and rude. Really. I think you need to take a hard look at yourself in the mirror because if you can't find the human decency to be polite online, how polite are you face-to-face with people? I'd hate to find out.

  • @crashdaparty "the first girl they interview is a complete idiot." YUP!!!

  • @crashdaparty no one is buying up the land so they can put the fire out

the fire can't be put out.

    we didn't start the fire.

    it was always burning.

    since the worlds been turning.

we. didn't. start. the. fire. you dolt.

  • @crashdaparty The government is not 'buying up the land'. They (PA) already claimed eminent domain on the entire town. The people that remain there are living there illegally as squatters. The fire most likely was started from the whole trash burning near the coal vain incident, but nobody is 100% sure because some people from Centralia claim it was started in 1932 but temporarily controlled. It is true there is still an active volunteer fire and ambulance station there, with a bar.

  • i enjoyed this except for a few things.

    1. use of fake flames ruined the atmosphere.

    2. the music is supposed to be creepy but you give no hint as to wether it is haunted. it's just burning.

    3. the placement of Silent Hill without explaining that Centralia inspired the location for the movie

  • Did you guys see Pyramid Head while you were there?

  • it is possible they can put out the fire but there gonna need water about the size if five lakes

  • there's crack on the ground? holy shit! is it still there or did you guys took it already? hahahaha! just kidding, cool vid btw

  • The crack's been there since the mid 90's which is when they decided to permanently close the road instead of continually fixing it it.

Yes the fire department is still there and still functioning.

And of course it's hot and damp. Steam is hot and damp.

From what I heard the fire will burn for an estimated 250 years.

  • yeah i wouldnt be hanging out in that crack in the road you can get sucked it

  • @lgec88 if look at the pictures on wikipedia there are warning signs of possible unexpected collapses i guess whatever it takes for these folks

  • this place is neat i went for a nature hike there, theres little random roads in the middle of the woods they are leveling the whole town out soon. when thi happened the government was paying people shit loads of money to move. they tried dumping water in the mines, dirt, ash, firewalls. it has enough feul to burn for more than 100 years yet. people wanted the bodies dug out of the graveyard too but that never happened.

  • Were probably lookin at the End of the world.. Monster style. D:

  • Dem peoples gonna git out pretty soon bud. Dey be gettin out before da fumes get to theys heads

  • what is everyone's fascination with this? I live 5 minutes from here and it's no big deal. If you all think it's weird now, you should have seen it back when I was a kid in the 80's. The trees were on fire then. You could smell the smell of death. You could see the red hot glow like that of a volcano. Now that was scary. Now, it's not so much a big deal. You can hardly tell anything is burning except where that crack is.

  • @BNSFrailfan -yes, that is true. Just got dont watching a science show vid about Centralia. They had a geologist visit and take measurements, and that is just about the temperature he said the mines would be burning at.

  • At 1:34 that is the same music used for one of the Dixie Square Mall videos. Kind of fitting.

  • hear something say "get off" several times starting at 5:47

  • I couldn't hear it, strange.

  • i herd it say get off my Land that what i herd it say...at 5.54

  • Beginning at 5:54, I can hear a man whisper something like "get off my (something)".

  • I don't hear it..

  • @mermaidlorelei I heard it too but who knows if it was meant to be like that

  • I heard it, but the way this vid is setup is sorta meant to be spooky, so my best is that that was intentional.

  • what ws the point of measuring the crack?

  • So anyone that goes there can measure it themselves to see if the crack has spread.

  • @AdventureMyths

I was there actually in August 2009 and I plan to return in the summer of 2010 to do map out the fire: where it has been, where it is now, and where it's going. Maybe it will help someone...

You did a wonderful job, by the way. :)

  • the part where it says HOT!!! under that theres a sad story in paint.

  • Hmm this would be a good place to film a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie

  • like silent hill?? lol this is where silent hill is based off of

  • There is a man who has lived there his entire life, and he is pretty old...he is just fine, I dont think the fumes are that bad, I think I read somewhere that the people that owned land there owned mineral rights so the locals feel that the government just wants the coal...I dont know just rumors I guess.

  • @Skiddledee -if it is burning coal, then it will be giving off heavy metal fumes (mercury, arsenic, lead, etc.). I worked as a project monitor for Hazmat teams and one of the jobs we had to do was a trash burnining facility that was coal powered. These heavy metals are already present in solid form in the anthracite, but when it is heated they become an even more toxic and concentrated gas. It would be interesting to study the health effects in Centralias residents with long term exposure.

  • You guys got balls to stand in that crack in the road.

  • Not anymore, they nearly burned off! lol

  • @AdventureMyths hahahah nice answer :)

  • i live in frackville they always knew why it started the dump burned trash once a year and it caught fire

  • creepy

  • wow only 11 ppl live there damn

  • did you guys spend the night?

  • We did. We stayed in Frackville at the Holiday Inn Express. Didn't want to sleep to close to the toxic fumes. It actually snowed overnight which isolated the hotspots, its a depressing and dangerous place!! Thanks for watching!

  • no problem i just want to go and check it out, depressing that so many people had to move and the majority of the houses were demolished

  • @Teejayflex It's not depressing for the people at all. You should see the houses that they bought with the money the goverment gave them to move out. They are sitting pretty now!

  • do u live in schuykill county?

  • I feel sory for the people that lived there and the rest of the people that wanted to stay. thanks for putting the video on here.

  • Just pointing out that the road she's speaking of in the beginning of the video has been used far more recently than the 80's. I'm 19 and remember using it as the main transportation between Ashland and Centralia when I was younger.

  • Thanks for the update and watching!

  • I know dude. I was so cold I didn't know what I was saying half the time. I kept slapping my leg cause it fell asleep.

  • is the fuckin palce hunted??And what is with the dramatic music

  • Hunted? Dramatic music? Why would it be haunted and the music gives more life to a very tragic story of a lost town. Now check with your mom before watching anymore videos!

  • i grew up right next to here.....we used to ride quads through here all the time.....all the locals say it started from the cemetary burning off there brush garbage which they have done many times before ........but this time they did it where the coal was real close to the ground lever and they didn't know.....and once it caught it kept burning

  • Does anyone remember back in the 60s when Centralia had an outside jail on the main intersection? It was called "the stockade" and I recall seeing people in it as we drove by.

  • i heard that's where the closet gays are hidden tom

  • People who use t he term CLOSET GAYS, are normally gay!

  • nifty! there's a mt carmel in penn? there's one in ilinois that i'm moving to. :)

  • Thanks for the video. My partner and I plan on taking the 5 hour drive over sometime in the coming months. I want to try and see if there is still an exposed flame right past Dead Man's Curve on Big Mine Run.

  • Fascinating stuff, guys. Thanks for giving me something to invest my mind in while I try to relax from the daily trials of work and the real world.

  • No Problem... Watch the abandoned Asylum videos Part 1 and 2 and you will look forward to going back to work... :) Thanks for watching!

  • Mmmm. It's The Real Silent Hill.

  • haha I've been here before!!! =] I seriously got freaked out about that sign saying that the area may collapse at any possible minute lol

  • Very nice video and the temperature readings were a nice touch! I made my second visit on January 3, 2008 and the ambient temperature was around 13F/-10C. Yet many of the rocks I touched were at least 80F/27C. Centralia is a very interesting place to visit during cold weather.

  • i was there a few summers ago and in July it felt like it was 200 degrees on the surface.

  • These Are My Hills!

I grew up Huntin & Fishin' here. Wondo and I skipped school many times and hunted for endless hours in these Hills. Always managed to stop at the Volunteer Fire Station in Centraila for a few cold ones.

I took my son here last summer and taught him how to fly fish in Roaring Creek at the bottom of the mountain. Saw Aunt Arlene & Uncle Lester in Bear Gap. Stayed with his Graddfather in Coal Township.

All the good coal runs deep now, like the roots of a good family.

  • These are my HOME HILLS ... I've hunted and fished in these Hills all my life. I took my son to Pennsylvania to visit his Grandfather and I made sure we went to Centralia.

Most of my family is now burried in these Hills. They say Coal Runs Deep, just like the roots of a good family.
