I love this video. Indiana University showed it in a class about stereotypes and it really helped me understand how hurtful Asian stereotypes can be. Thanks for this Slanty Eyed Mama!!!
I just saw Kate Rigg on a PBS station, where she did a little of Rice Rice Baby. I love that a woman can now awkwardly rap about her pubic hair on public broadcasting these days.
And the preceeding program was about Gay Penguins.
it's aight. this was better than i thought it'd be b/c that of that asian style skirt I saw at first. better than margaret cho b/c to me she actually puts down asian in her stand up to make non asians laugh. even tho your joking i dun like the term "roundeye" b/c it implies asians are slant eyed, which most that i know aren't. aight piece!
instead of bringing our rich culture to masses in a positive way, you pull it back to the avenue of stereo type. You said you want to make a different in perception of AZN. This is just a reminder of how western seeing us. Instead of being proud, you simply victimized urself. Maybe the way u see urself reflect how you making fun of ur simpathatic self.
you are mistaken. our work is about exposing and subverting the stereotypes about asian americans in the media by re-occupying them and deconstructing them from a place of fierce identity politicking. stereotypes must be discussed analyzed satirized and exposed in order to fight them. otherwise they stay in the colelctive consciousness and are perpetuated by ignorant outsiders (eg. non AZNs) thank you for your comment.
@slantyeyedmama I understand the need to expose stereotypes, and I respect the work of Kate Rigg. But I also feel more attention should be focusing on showing a positive image of Asian Americans. Simply debunking a myth isn't going to solve age old prejudice. We need positive images, and role models in our community to combat the negative imposed by the media. It's a multi-front battle and we need more Asian American to be aware of this.
@muaythai4ko Just look at the word AZN that you typed out. Being Asian myself, I really hate that stupid abbreviated word of who I am or look like. But hey, its a word that many people embrace and take to themselves. Another word: Queer. Used to be totally derogatory. The gay community, through many years, have taken that word and now? It's part of their acronym and identity. LGBTQI. Don't ask me what they all mean, but a lot of words they have, are a result of taking it back and owning it.
