  • BRILLIANTLY SIMPLE MUSIC BRINGING BACK MEMORIES OF OVER 70 YEARS AGO WHEN I LAUGHED AT THE WORD "BUM", NOT KNOWING THEN THAT IT MEANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO WHAT I WAS THINKING! AH, THE GOOD OL DAYS. IF ONLY WE COULD GO BACK.

  • Thank you so much for this! I became familiar with this song from a train-hopping friend, and she said she'd learned it after hearing it sung in person by Utah Phillips.

This reminds me of when my father used to play old folk and blues songs for me as a child. :)

  • So moving...

  • Shared this song with my father too, Lew, one of the few things we had in common.

  • Lew, I was a good friend of Utah Phillips, he always had this in his kit bag. Very popular at the HOBO convention in Brit ,Iowa every year.

  • Good job and bravo!!!

  • Don't stop, ya bum, ahahaha! Hallelujah...

  • great version this has become one of my favorite songs of all time

  • I really enjoy this one. I've been listening to this off and on for the last month. I have now a banjo uke and am trying to follow without much success yet. Soon I hope!

  • what a really fun song.

  • Harry Mcclintock was a terrific songwriter. He would be mighty proud of this Porch cover!!

  • nice work -- didn't Jolson sing this (or was he just in a film by that name).

  • Joe Hill made a great text to this tune.

  • Look for "U. Utah Phillips (1 of 7)" to more american folksongs.
