@FallFromGrac3 Not exactly, there's about 8,000–10,000 M249s will remain in service. also there's 450 M27 IAR's still testing. but my only main concern for the IAR weapon system is the loss of Suppressive Fire, which is what most Machine Guns have. but there's already M16s and M4s that can be modified like an IAR.
why the fuck would you replace the m249 with a modified M4a1? how the fuck can i suppress an area with a 30rnd magazine. sure its lighter and compact but think people. M249 is a support weapon. i cant do much supporting when im constantly changing mags. whats next you going to Give scout snipers a pistol with a long barrel.
sure this weapon fire a mag not belts. But the m249 fire with both.
@Ilia1138 you know their are other weapons in our arsenal that need to be replaced. but with this gun, they will replace the wrong one. The M249 is great... the M4 is not. Replace that gun not the SAW
Looks like a good weapon for squad support, but I can't help but think it wouldn't be nearly as good as the M249 in situations that call for more serious suppressive fire. And I'm not just talking about the 30 rounds mags (which could easily be replaced with 100-rounds Beta C-Mags, for example).
arent all assault rifles basically automatic rifles? take an m4 assault rifle and this so called "automatic rifle" they have a similar look, same feel, similar weight, same caliber round, they both take in stanag mags, and most importantly their both safe/semi/auto trigger group. what make an "automatic rifle" differ from an assault rifle? becuase this definitly doesnt fall under lmg
I think the USMC's idea to use this gun as a replacement for the M249 , is kinda pathetic .
This weapon would be hard to use as a supression fire tool due to its puny 30 round magazine , I hope it comes with a larger barrel magazine which could hold up much more rounds , or maybe a belt fed version of this rifle
@leoncarbon If you watch the video you'll note how they didn't want a belt-fed system. Belts are much slower to reload and they snag on a lot of things. I have enough issues with other non-critical things snagging on stuff in the field and scruffy urban areas.
IIRC there are extended STANAG style magazines out there that offer a good 45 or so rounds. It's not a huge increase but it's the same style magazine as what other AR's use, just longer. There are also 100rd drum mags for this
@Xero852 I guess 100 round drum mags are the best solution to this weapon , but if supression fire groups were to use the 30 stagnag , I don't think it would have good effect on target
@leoncarbon I actually looking into this further after making my last comment. Surefire is making a 60 round STANAG compliant magazine that seems to feed into many different weapon systems flawlessly. I could see that being a real force multiplier with this weapon system. Just look up "Surefire 60 round mag" on here and you'll see what I mean.
@Xero852 I watched it anyways thanks for the info! but honestly I don't think a 60 round mag could lay down good supression fire as good as a belt fed 200 round box...
@Xero852 well you need a whole lotta ammo if you wanna lay down continuous supression fire , supression fire with a 30 round mag ain't gonna supress anything
@leoncarbon That's my point though, even though box-fed SAW's have hundreds of rounds, you only fire in bursts... Otherwise you're not accurate and you're still not going to suppress anything.
@Xero852 but you still waste loads of time trying to reload the IAR after few bursts , and the SAW have lots of ammo , so you dont have to reload all the time , providing good continuous supression fire , but honestly in my oppinion , belt fed machine guns are the best for supressive fire.
@leoncarbon True, but reloading a belt also takes longer than reloading a magazine. If you're half-good at reloading an AR platform you can be back to firing off rounds in under 5 seconds easily. You can also carry the 60 round mags in any double STANAG mag pouch, so just run two rows of those and you can easily carry 660 rounds. IIRC most support gunners carry a box in the gun, and two extras for a total of 750, so there's not much of a difference there.
Honestly I disagree with replacing the SAW with the IAR, the SAW was meant to put lead down range. Friggin IAR only hold 30 rounds, it'll be a cold days in hell before I give out my mags to someone using the IAR, because he shot all of his in like 2 minutes (Usually carry 8 mags of 30 rounds). If you ask me this is the Corps way of replacing the M4/M16, I know my unit will be keeping our SAW.
I read somewhere that the Marine Corps only wanted the iar to replace the unreliable m16 but said they wanted to replace the saw to cut through the bureaucratic crap
You can get a magazine from your buddy with a M249 also. Taking away the M249 for a rifle that maintains 1/4th of the ammo capacity is useless. It's a good concept, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The SAW is a great weapon. It was comfortable and easy to shoot.
@micndrlio No. It is not the same weapon. This is the LWRCI Infantry Automatic Rifle. The rifle you're speaking of in Battlefield 3 is a slightly modified HK416 in service with some of the US Marine Corps renamed the M27 IAR. They are not the same gun. Please don't start giving us Battlefield players a bad name by beginning to act like all of the Call of Duty turds out there. .
@Moosezorz M27 is a military designator for the IAR, no matter which company won the contract it would have been called the M27 IAR. H&K happened to win the contract as their weapon was probably cheaper. Also I am an avid CoD 4/MW2/BlackOps fan and player who now plays BF3 over MW3. Those "turds" you speak of exist on both sides...so please dont act like your a better human being or gamer for playing one over the other. Semper Fi!
@micndrlio Yes, exactly my point. He said "I love this weapon in Battlefield 3!" because there is the M27 IAR in that game, as you know. What you failed to grasp is that he incorrectly identified this weapon, the LWRC IAR, as the M27, just because it has the acronym "IAR" attached to it. I never said anything against the points you made, the fact that there are no Battlefield "turds" nor did I try to show my superiority over others. Stop misunderstanding what I wrote. Thanks.
As someone below already said 30 round magazine does not make the machine gun. Second this weapon is not different then standard M4, yes its got a thicker barrel and larger fire rate but the principle is the same. One huge disadvanatege is the number of rounds it carries. Saw is ready with 100 rounds. This has 30. I dont see why anyone would need this rifle.
@Ouija121085 It's lighter than the SAW by a considerable margin (nine or ten pounds) and training with this is very similar to the M16 and M4 rifles, so troops are already familiar with the system. The capacity question can be answered with either the dual drum magazines, similar to what Germany does with their MG36, or using those 60/100 round quad stack magazines. But that begs the question, why get an entirely new weapon system that is so similar to the M4 and shares the same magazines?
@Moosezorz i just don't understand how it's supposed to give the same suppresive fire as a belt fed system like the SAW. So the IAR will never heat up enough to need a barrel change? Even if you use larger/drum mags? I think the IAR sounds like a better replacement for the M16. Why not keep the SAW, but replace the M16/M4 with the IAR!
@spiraling69 Heh, nor do I. In all honesty, it seems like a slightly beefed up AR, which might be able to fill the role, but like you said, not nearly as effectively as the SAW does. And yes I agree with the replacement part. Much of the normal activity soldiers do anyway could be made better with these improvements, but not the role of SAW.
real live ammo used here in this "scenario".... the guys using the AK's were captured terrorist that were given a last chance opportunity for survival.... if they killed mac and the guys they would be released... but we all know what happened....
This IAR to replace the SAW is fukin stupid.the only weapon i see that could replace the SAW is the Ares Shrike.Waaay fukin better than that silly IAR
@dominic970 although I'm not familiar with the Shrike, I agree with you. The SAW provides suppresion do to its high rate of belt fed fire and the M27 does not replace that. I feel the M27 should be a replacement for the M4 or M16, but not the SAW.
The military only adopted the HK IAR variant and the Scar Heavy (7.62) and not the Scar Light (5.56) to compliment the current small arms. They didn't have enough money to follow through on their scar L order, so they decided to keep the m4 and just get the 7.62 scar.
Anybody else thinking that the this IAR/H&K416 is really more to replace the M16/M4 instead of replacing the 249? I'm thinking a lot of this SAW replacement is just to get around some bureaucracy.
The problem I have is that the job of the Automatic Rifleman is to lay down a high volume of fire for cover/suppressing fire.etc. I don't see how you can achieve that with only a 30 mag, you're out of ammo before you know it. Is the Marine Corps going to issue higher capacity magazines?
Being magazine fed for a LMG is not an advantage. Being a former marine I can say 200 yards straight from one gun is extremely useful in various situations. Though, I can admit that there are uses with an IAR. In an urban situation or in mounted patrolling an IAR would probably be a better choice.
I once saw a documentary years ago about the USA experimenting a SAW that looks like an asault rifle so that the enemy would not take down the autogunner first. It's a great idea confusing the enemy.
What the hell is the point of having civilians on the street like that? If I was standing there talking and around the corner come some dudes with their weapons at the ready, I would be gone before the shooting started.
@LuigianoMariano : maybe, but it's reloaded faster than the M249, and it's easyer to carry magasines... I think it's an interrsting weapon... And M249 stills a belgian LMG ^^
Well, what it's sure, it's that here in Switzerland, we will continue to use FN M249...
The only improvement that needs to be made to this gun is to replace out the 5.56mm with the 6.8mm, then it would be a real ass-kicking multi-use rifle. :)
It looks like the IAR is a gas piston system is it not? That would likely be the most important factor keeping the weapon system running cool at the bolt. AR style rifles are now offered in Gas piston instead of the DI style M4 that was shown.
He should have used one of those double drum mags that the german army use on their mg36. Thinking about it... In what way is this weapon revolutionary? Russians have had the rpk since the 60s. Germany uses a magazine fed mg36. Britain uses a drum mag on a heavy barreled sa80. Its not like heavy barreled open bolt version of rifles dont exist
bak in ww2 rifleman had semi auto rifle and auto rifleman had a automatic rifle... but whats the point of having a automatic rifleman nowadays? all rifleman today are armed with rifles that have a full auto trigger group might as well just replace the role of automatic rifleman with more rifleman or granadiers
m249 can already use 30rd mags if your out belts as a back up ...so besides a open bolt to let dirt and crap in and to cool off the ever so hot chamber of your rifle cause you are running rds through it to make it red hot like a m2hb thats been shooting straight all day and night and are scared of a cook off lol what have they really done here that is not already in service and is able to do its job without needing this crap..
@shkotaythe reason it's very good it's because it has the size of an m4 and the power of the saw m249 and if you want to attack a home if you had the saw m249 it would be better to have a walther ppk if you want to fight at a house because the saw m249 it's to big to move fast so the IAR its a very good gun because you have the size of an m4 and the power of the m249 so you have power and you can move fast and don't forget bigger magazines exist and better carry more magazines than been carrie
@shkotey that gun the reason it's very good it's because it has the size of an m4 and the power of the saw m249 and if you want to attack a home if you had the saw m249 it would be better to have a walther ppk if you want to fight at a house because the saw m249 it's to big to move fast so the IAR its a very good gun because you have the size of an m4 and the power of the m249 so you have power and you can move fast and don't forget bigger magazines exist and better carry more magazines than b
Yeesh....how many 30 rd magazines would one have to carry to use this in a SAW kind of role? One can spend a magazine in like 2-3 seconds. What if you in in a crappy situation all day? Seems like a lot of magazines to carry to make up for belts. Whats the purpose of it?
@shkotay I think they use 45 round magazines but it can take 30 round magazines as well its not a whole lot more but ido agree it would be annoying carrying around all those extra magazines with you.
Uhh... ok, so this makes little sense. Lets get rid of the reliability, large capacity and fire rate of the SAW and mate whats left with an M4 platform.
Ohh, ok, I thought, because its how the US military seems to work, that they were going to replace the SAW or other Squad deployed machine guns with this thing.
i hate the faggot adding shit sounds into the show. every scene the gun sounds one time like a pistol, the next scene like a revolver and later like a machine gun
@cocojumb0, and, this is based off the fact you play a lot of video games? Maybe it's your piece of shit sound system? Yah? Of course, yah. Fucking loser.
@Spawn666949 i heard those sounds before, they are definetly not coming from the gun. the sound editor put them in from some sound library. if you think a m27 sounds the way like it does in this shitty show youre fucked up beyond repair.
@zzz66606 I'm a dumb inbred fuck? Funny. Last time I remember you utilize a handheld controller to properly function an XBox. NOT a mouse.
Just because you're fucking rich doesn't mean you have a fucking Ph.D. Next time you go spouting off about fucking shit you don't even know, watch your fucking mouth.
@zzz66606 I don't blame the soldiers. That would be asinine.
The U.S. propaganda that keeps us from talking about the war is the "support our troops" slogan. "Do you support the troops?" is the question in the U.S. when it should be "Do you support the policies behind the war?"
According to a study done within our Pentagon (which is on my desktop right now) is we're not helping people over there and we went to war with shaky premises and lies.
@sk8tafrnk lol, games are inaccurate compared to real life, especially COD. COD designers just put the real life gun models inside game and put random stats for the guns, and the sound of the guns are made from computer, not recorded from real life, so what you get from COD that is useful are the gun models, oh wait, they also modified the models, so what you get is nothing, i can't believe idiots like you actually trust these games, oh wait, its because you're idiots
@pieluverftw I only trust the games because the accuracy is demonstrable in real life. It's supported by research, peer reviewed articles, experiments and infallible evidence.
The scientific method is the best method we have at determining what is probably true. Are you proposing that you have invented a better method? Why haven't you told scientists?
@sk8tafrnk im just pointing out that COD infos are extremely inaccurate, i used to play COD, but i later searched up the guns on google and found out that the COD designers are screwing up gun facts, they made the m16 TAR21 w/ 5.56 NATO having the same stopping power as the 7.62 NATO SCAR-H & 7.62 M43 AK47, also in real life, you don't expect a person get shot w/ a 50 cal in the nuts, sprint away like jet lee, jump over a cover, and kill you with a throwing knife on the toe
@sk8tafrnk there are other guns that they screw up about, and im not sure where did you get the info that they ACTUALLY did the research. If they did and ended up with the same results, its either that their minds are screwed up, or they found a fucked up source (i.e. they took something off Walt Disney websites)
@sk8tafrnk well, it seems that the source you found the info on is unreliable, you can tell me the source of the article and i'll look it up myself. If they did do the research and end up with the same results, that means that their minds are screwed up. btw for the damage of each gun, they don't test it on human flesh, so they can't get the exact amount of damage, also even if they tested it on gelatine, they won't end up with the same results as the ones they placed in the game
@sk8tafrnk Yes, i heard what you said, and that is why i told you to show me the source so you can prove to me the reliability of the source, and you are not going to convince me by telling me that your source is reliable without showing me what source you used
@sk8tafrnk well, prove to me how is it infallible, show me what the evidence is, the gun stats in the game are dramatically different compared to real guns, they don't test the damage and range, since they can't shoot human targets, they create muzzle sound from computer software, since they are too lazy to record, and they changed the gun model to make it look cooler. You're being stubborn, if you can't find the source, that means you're wrong, and you know about it
Sooo they're replacing a LMG with an AR? :S

I never said anything against the points you made, the fact that there are no Battlefield "turds" nor did I try to show my superiority over others. Stop misunderstanding what I wrote. Thanks.
Moosezorz 1 month ago
@micndrlio What YOU said, not "he". Apologies.
Moosezorz 1 month ago
As someone below already said 30 round magazine does not make the machine gun. Second this weapon is not different then standard M4, yes its got a thicker barrel and larger fire rate but the principle is the same. One huge disadvanatege is the number of rounds it carries. Saw is ready with 100 rounds. This has 30. I dont see why anyone would need this rifle.
Ouija121085 2 months ago
@Ouija121085 It's lighter than the SAW by a considerable margin (nine or ten pounds) and training with this is very similar to the M16 and M4 rifles, so troops are already familiar with the system. The capacity question can be answered with either the dual drum magazines, similar to what Germany does with their MG36, or using those 60/100 round quad stack magazines. But that begs the question, why get an entirely new weapon system that is so similar to the M4 and shares the same magazines?
Moosezorz 2 months ago
@Moosezorz i just don't understand how it's supposed to give the same suppresive fire as a belt fed system like the SAW. So the IAR will never heat up enough to need a barrel change? Even if you use larger/drum mags? I think the IAR sounds like a better replacement for the M16. Why not keep the SAW, but replace the M16/M4 with the IAR!
spiraling69 2 months ago
@spiraling69 Heh, nor do I. In all honesty, it seems like a slightly beefed up AR, which might be able to fill the role, but like you said, not nearly as effectively as the SAW does. And yes I agree with the replacement part. Much of the normal activity soldiers do anyway could be made better with these improvements, but not the role of SAW.

This IAR to replace the SAW is fukin stupid.the only weapon i see that could replace the SAW is the Ares Shrike.Waaay fukin better than that silly IAR
dominic970 2 months ago
@dominic970 although I'm not familiar with the Shrike, I agree with you. The SAW provides suppresion do to its high rate of belt fed fire and the M27 does not replace that. I feel the M27 should be a replacement for the M4 or M16, but not the SAW.

@IpetTiger
actually it's an m27 infantry automatic rifle, m416 is the american hk416.
xx1momochilli1xx 2 months ago
The military only adopted the HK IAR variant and the Scar Heavy (7.62) and not the Scar Light (5.56) to compliment the current small arms. They didn't have enough money to follow through on their scar L order, so they decided to keep the m4 and just get the 7.62 scar.
Any other new rifles/pistols adopted?

Anybody else thinking that the this IAR/H&K416 is really more to replace the M16/M4 instead of replacing the 249? I'm thinking a lot of this SAW replacement is just to get around some bureaucracy.

I personally think that lwrc should have won the iar competition
sangminlee1234 2 months ago
The problem I have is that the job of the Automatic Rifleman is to lay down a high volume of fire for cover/suppressing fire.etc. I don't see how you can achieve that with only a 30 mag, you're out of ammo before you know it. Is the Marine Corps going to issue higher capacity magazines?
jaysnipr107 2 months ago
its basically just a full auto m4 with open bolt converted system

Mr108454 2 months ago
Being magazine fed for a LMG is not an advantage. Being a former marine I can say 200 yards straight from one gun is extremely useful in various situations. Though, I can admit that there are uses with an IAR. In an urban situation or in mounted patrolling an IAR would probably be a better choice.
oakleyklj 2 months ago
is this basically an m4 with a heavier barrel?
CaptJerico 2 months ago
I once saw a documentary years ago about the USA experimenting a SAW that looks like an asault rifle so that the enemy would not take down the autogunner first. It's a great idea confusing the enemy.

Unless it can accept a 50-Round or 100-Round Drum Magazine, it's NOT going to replace the SAW as a Light Machine Gun.
LuigianoMariano 2 months ago 2
@LuigianoMariano : maybe, but it's reloaded faster than the M249, and it's easyer to carry magasines... I think it's an interrsting weapon... And M249 stills a belgian LMG ^^
Well, what it's sure, it's that here in Switzerland, we will continue to use FN M249...

Its not like heavy barreled open bolt version of rifles dont exist

sonofrock97 3 months ago
Finger on bolt is from gas piston not open bolt
Jonny15227 3 months ago
m249 can already use 30rd mags if your out belts as a back up ...so besides a open bolt to let dirt and crap in and to cool off the ever so hot chamber of your rifle cause you are running rds through it to make it red hot like a m2hb thats been shooting straight all day and night and are scared of a cook off lol what have they really done here that is not already in service and is able to do its job without needing this crap..

Yeesh....how many 30 rd magazines would one have to carry to use this in a SAW kind of role? One can spend a magazine in like 2-3 seconds. What if you in in a crappy situation all day? Seems like a lot of magazines to carry to make up for belts. Whats the purpose of it?
shkotay 3 months ago
@shkotay I think they use 45 round magazines but it can take 30 round magazines as well its not a whole lot more but ido agree it would be annoying carrying around all those extra magazines with you.

@cocojumb0 why would he bother changing the gun sounds anyway? You don't base the effectiveness of a weapon on how it sounds.

@zzz66606 I don't blame the soldiers. That would be asinine.
The U.S. propaganda that keeps us from talking about the war is the "support our troops" slogan. "Do you support the troops?" is the question in the U.S. when it should be "Do you support the policies behind the war?"
According to a study done within our Pentagon (which is on my desktop right now) is we're not helping people over there and we went to war with shaky premises and lies.

sk8tafrnk 2 months ago
@sk8tafrnk lol, games are inaccurate compared to real life, especially COD. COD designers just put the real life gun models inside game and put random stats for the guns, and the sound of the guns are made from computer, not recorded from real life, so what you get from COD that is useful are the gun models, oh wait, they also modified the models, so what you get is nothing, i can't believe idiots like you actually trust these games, oh wait, its because you're idiots
pieluverftw 2 months ago
@pieluverftw I only trust the games because the accuracy is demonstrable in real life. It's supported by research, peer reviewed articles, experiments and infallible evidence.
The scientific method is the best method we have at determining what is probably true. Are you proposing that you have invented a better method? Why haven't you told scientists?
sk8tafrnk 2 months ago
@sk8tafrnk im just pointing out that COD infos are extremely inaccurate, i used to play COD, but i later searched up the guns on google and found out that the COD designers are screwing up gun facts, they made the m16 TAR21 w/ 5.56 NATO having the same stopping power as the 7.62 NATO SCAR-H & 7.62 M43 AK47, also in real life, you don't expect a person get shot w/ a 50 cal in the nuts, sprint away like jet lee, jump over a cover, and kill you with a throwing knife on the toe
pieluverftw 2 months ago
@sk8tafrnk there are other guns that they screw up about, and im not sure where did you get the info that they ACTUALLY did the research. If they did and ended up with the same results, its either that their minds are screwed up, or they found a fucked up source (i.e. they took something off Walt Disney websites)
pieluverftw 2 months ago
@pieluverftw I got my data from credible sources.
sk8tafrnk 2 months ago
@sk8tafrnk well, it seems that the source you found the info on is unreliable, you can tell me the source of the article and i'll look it up myself. If they did do the research and end up with the same results, that means that their minds are screwed up. btw for the damage of each gun, they don't test it on human flesh, so they can't get the exact amount of damage, also even if they tested it on gelatine, they won't end up with the same results as the ones they placed in the game
pieluverftw 2 months ago
@pieluverftw No, you must not have heard what I said. My sources are reliable and the evidence infallible.
sk8tafrnk 2 months ago
@sk8tafrnk Yes, i heard what you said, and that is why i told you to show me the source so you can prove to me the reliability of the source, and you are not going to convince me by telling me that your source is reliable without showing me what source you used
pieluverftw 2 months ago
@pieluverftw The evidence is infallible.
sk8tafrnk 2 months ago
@sk8tafrnk well, prove to me how is it infallible, show me what the evidence is, the gun stats in the game are dramatically different compared to real guns, they don't test the damage and range, since they can't shoot human targets, they create muzzle sound from computer software, since they are too lazy to record, and they changed the gun model to make it look cooler. You're being stubborn, if you can't find the source, that means you're wrong, and you know about it
pieluverftw 2 months ago
