  • Oh god! the ending chord. So much build up and then nothing

  • The second violinist dwarfs his violin :)

  • bravo

  • Johannes Brahms on second Violin!

  • @berickson925 hahahahahahahahaha

  • me gusta mucho

  • Such silly stands for such amazing musicians.

  • most impeteous one I've ever heard

  • Beautiful.

  • :O

  • Schubert sounding perfectly straight, like something between Stravinsky and Richard Strauss here - proving that he was so incredibly gifted in creating various moods and tempers. Absolutely stunning.

  • Thank you for uploading! I'm currently working on this with my quartet and it is very helpful footage.

  • who could dislike their phenomenal tone

  • Great performance of this masterpiece, and your split of the video was very well timed! Thanks for posting.

  • Simplesmente FABULOSO! MAGNÍFICO! Som dos deuses!

  • Great version but I recommend you listen at the one performed by Emerson String Quartet too. Its PURE MAGIC. T'is a pitty that it's not on youtube...

Besides, this piece is a colossal rendition to pure and streamlined beauty, streamlined not meaning superficial. This music ascends from the most profound and human love right up to the most divine and universal of expressions. Definately one of my favourite string quartets ever.

Thank you Schubert for this so precious gift to humanity.

  • 1:00

  • Epic intro is epic.

Schubert, I love you ! Great interpretation.

  • this is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 綺麗ね…

  • 1:42 #LOL

  • @hugomak3 bien vu !!! XD

  • @hugomak3 I am SO glad i never saw that while high... Oh my goodness, I'da been laughing for hours...

  • Can you buy this as a dvd??

  • @rustydog1236--- It certainly is. Amazon has it. About $13 with shipping from one of their vendors, Movie Mars. I have ordered online from them before and they are straight. Just search --- death and the maiden dvd

  • I'd leave out Mozart, because he's so predictable, and add Greig

  • Bach - Beethoven - Brahms - Mozart - Schubert... and then, the others. I mean, the others are GREAT composers, but this 5 are GODS OF MUSIC.

  • @lunaticfriki I would argue that you need a top 6, and that Chopin needs to be added to that list.

  • @incorporeal05

I'd leave out Mozart, because he's so predictable, and add Grieg.

  • @lunaticfriki add Rachmaninoff and Chopin and i'm game!

  • @lunaticfriki i would add debussy, grieg and wagner. Maybe Satie for his contribution to modern music.

  • Masterpiece of masterpieces. Superb interpretation, best to my knowledge. Great video. Thank you very, very much

  • so many colors. truly old school

  • Polanski used the piece for one of his best films.

  • Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Je n'ai jamais entendu quatre archets respirer aussi bien ensemble que ceux du quatuor Alban Berg. Sublime!

  • A wonderful performance and taping of such...

  • Ah...thank you for posting this.

  • 789 are maidens. 10 people are death.

  • The 1st violin's articulation at the beginning is perfect

  • Schubert was an all around great composer, but his pieces for stringed instruments stand out from all others

  • 10 people are noobs : )

  • Listening to Death and the Maiden while reading the drama Death and the Maiden ^_^

  • como me fascina esa pieza y tocan lindisimo, como es que vivi todo este tiempo sin escucharlos.

  • the depth of emotion being shown is something very thrilling to listen to and it just pulls you in to the performance more and more

  • Acho que faz seis meses que toquei num concerto com schubert, e estou com saudades. Perfect Song.

  • beautiful just that beautiful that's art!

  • No.1 string quartet ever.

  • My favorit in chamber music - the composition and the Alban Berg Quartett - both !

  • Best recording ever! - (maybe also Melos ;-) ...great...great...music. Sublime and heavenly. Should be heard over and over again, and heard for what it is, and how Schubert intended for it to be.

P.S.Polanksi: you vile cocksucker scum - you may be forgiven for having sex with a minor girl who was sexually ripe...but you will NEVER be forgiven for how little respect you showed Schubert in your movie - may you rot in hell!

    Rot in hell, Polanski!

PS Kingsley - what were you thinking?!?!

  • wow

  • Amazing!

  • Amazing

  • Pichler's sound is amazing. Gives me goosebumps all the time.

  • I'm glad they did this before they split up. Great playing.

  • Fake!

  • @TimonofBath U are fake ;)

  • @ElinHedda This is true.

  • I added 1-6 to Queue and toggled "Turn autoplay on", listening to this while I read the play "Death and the Maiden" by Ariel Dorfman. 2 brilliant pieces of work, 2 brilliant authors. Do the same and give 2 thumbs up!

  • what is the number of this piece?

  • sagol magaria dzaaan ::))))

  • mosh pit anyone?

  • @goldnineable try this...my favourite

    /watch?v=f7loz_Y5iOo

  • I play violin and my orchestra conductor announced last week that the whole string section is going to be playing a modified version of this. I practically squealed with excitement. This has always been my favorite string piece and I'm excited to play it. Although I'm sure it won't sound nearly as good as these guys =]

  • Awesome! TY.

  • simply amazing i wish i could as well as the cellist in the quartet

  • Schubert wrote such lovely yet tragic music, I love it. Excelent performance.

It's such fun to play this quartet, even when you are just an amature (like me ^^ ).

  • Its amazing how four guys can sound like a hundred man orchestra I'nt it?

  • Merci à tous ces musiciens qui nous procurent un plaisir immense

  • they are realy fantastic ..

  • In Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors This music is used beautifully.

    fantastic music, powerful yet tender

  • when i think of the worlds greatest composers, schubert is on the top of list.

i can hardly think of any other composer that could evoke SUCH emotion with his pieces than schubert.

and the alban berg quartet is just fantastic. what an amazing second violinst too!

  • What instruments are in this?

  • @AyoMXmuzixxx a standart quartett combination - 1st and second violin, a viola and a cello.

  • Thank you very much for posting this. This is a very thoughtful interpretation of the quartet - not to mention brilliantly executed by one of the best quartets the musical world has had the privilege to know.

  • kick back on the couch. turn out the lights and light a candle or two. somebody set the vol to 5. i'm gonna relax and take a journey to a place far far away with this song on.

  • Super!!

  • my favorite classic piece of all time!

  • LOVED the bow take-off at 1:52

  • Yeah. Isn't it a pain that YouTube won't take larger files?

  • I like not only the way you play but also a high quality video work ! Very good job...

  • Delicious sounds

  • Bravo-freakin'-tissimo!!!!!!

  • greatt

  • Played with the most important thing :

    Passion and love : )

  • I so wish I could play an instrument in this way, it's so dignified.

Ok that's it, I'm buying that piano.

  • @a1mint yes! forget the cost and the potential troubles that lie ahead and follow your dream!

  • @a1mint Is enough you can play piano..........I do not know nothing....when I listen this kind of music i feel good but I feel bad with my self because I am not capble of nothing....so even if you dont play in this manner with time and perseveration will made it !

  • @MrLiviooo Liviooo....Music isn't an ability its a personality , something that you were born with , an extra part of your mind, either way. Don't feel bad, I can't draw but I play four instruments , I don't have neat writing but I write poetry. Its a way of life , your not average , you have your joys and your talents as equal to everyone. =D

  • @a1mint get the violin so much more difficult and exact you will become a more disciplined person, or viola but hey the choice is yours...

  • @a1mint Where did you see the piano? This is chamber music.

  • i'm playing this quartet right now with my siblings =)

  • Do I have to go to todays rehearsel?

  • Chamber music is fucking dope >:D, i'd listen to it any day

  • Nice piece.

  • Great! I do not have enough words to rate this music...........

  • Chamber pieces rule!

  • ayer mismo lo vi en directooooo

    diooooos (L)

mi primer concierto de musica clasica

no sabia la diferencia que habia de un directo a un cd O.o

    me he enamoradoooooo (L)

  • I played this in a quartet when I was in high school. It's such a great piece.

  • Gänsehaut!!

  • one of my favorite pieces since primary school

way before I know what death is

  • the best ever did u know that the composer write this music in the bed of death the best ever thnx

  • No he didn't. When he composed this, he was not aware of his bad health.

  • WOw....

  • amazing

  • BRAVO aux musiciens,c'est sublime.

  • I love Polanski movies.

  • Adieu le quatuor Alban Berg! C'est une époque qui se termine. Ils ont laissé le quatuor pas tout à fait où ils l'avaient trouvé en 1971...

  • Beautiful

  • Amazing!

  • beautiful. This piece always reminds me of The House That Dripped Blood, 1970s cult Amicus spooky film, which played it.

  • And me of the film with the same name.

  • Hey a film called Death and The Maiden? If so I'd love to see it

  • Go and watch it then ;-) with Ben Kingsley and Jamie Lee Curtis, if I remember that right.

  • thanks

  • It's Sigourney Weaver not JLC...

  • Right, I was not sure about that..

  • Jamie Lee Curtis????? Oh, my God!!!!

  • I find it amazing

  • Albanber laukotea hoberena

    que cuatro musicazos

  • You'd be a fool not to fall in love with this music.

  • So scary!

  • Wunderbar !

  • premiered on february 1st, 1826, 2 years before the early author's death, considered the best quartet out of the 14 Schubert wrote, with a general pesimistic tone, perhaps due to the fact he was already ill at the time

  • One of the very greatest string quartets, played by one of the greatest string quartets! Lovely.

  • this is all what you need four great composers playing with all there hearts out into this one music to make every thing worth watching.

  • Ich mag Schubert nicht besonders - aber Death and the Maiden ist ein ganz großes Stück Musik.

  • Great interpretation! I've not heard this for a while! Thanks!

  • is it normal to put the stand sooo looow?

  • LOL

  • Comment removed

  • no its not just you... i like it alot more in D minor

  • yes it is normal to put that stand so low. They do it so that they can all see one another and follow one another perfectly, hence a perfect quartet that plays as one. ahhh beautiful!

  • It also perhaps, may have to do with the recording of it. It wouldn't make a very good shot if a stand was in the way of one's face.

  • thank you so much for sharing this! this music is the last music my father heard before he died. schubert is the greatest composer. every his music is a winterreise. its also nice to see thomas kakuska (viola) again. alban berg quartett is my favourite!

your taste is excellent. thank you once more!

  • Gorgeous rendition of this moving and beautiful piece! Thanks for sharing!!!!

  • These guys are electric.

  • i love schubert!!!

  • Comme toujours, AB joue avec une telle classe et respect de l'oeuvre! This is exactly how I would have liked to play it, so many years ago! Quels artistes!

    N.

  • Wow, you are very intelligent aren't you??

  • In fact, he may be sooo intelligent, that this music he considers profane, too simple and below his level.

  • omg, this is my favorite quartet piece! awesome performance! it's so moving!

  • I love AB so much!! They perform everything superbly. No one does Beethoven like them. And naturally, their Schubert is as good as anything else.

  • This is one of my very favorite pieces. Schubert was one fantastic composer!

    Thank you for uploading

  • anyone ever read the play?

  • I just read it this week. I had never heard the song before reading it, and this is nothing like what I had imagined it to be. There seems to be too much joy in this piece, too much life for it to reflect the tragedy of the play. Or maybe that's the point, maybe the contrast is what brings out the way she feels about Schubert. You ever read A Clockwork Orange? The author of that book does a similar thing with Beethoven, juxtaposing a harsh memory with classical music.

  • im sorry saban if this doesnt reply the same way you managed to do yours but yes i have read A Clockwork Orange and i am certainly positive that the immediate somewhat disgusting feeling you get from the mixture and juxtoposition of magnificent pieces are completely intended in both books/plays.

  • if you talking about the sad and sorrow sound in this piece. it is in the 2nd movement not the 1st.

  • Just a teensy-weensy bit. ;)

  • hahahahaaaaa :D that made me smile!

  • As a lifelong musician who has heard many live performances and recordings, I can confidently say that the late lamented Alban Berg String Quartet was the greatest quartet I ever heard; this is up to their usual high standard. They played in tune and as a unit better than any group I know.

  • brilliant!

  • Great post!

  • wow!!!! that sounds SOOOOOO cool!!!!

  • Why did they disbanded?

  • wow, im so excited now, my quartet and i are trying to convince our conductor to let us play this. i cant wait.

  • A great String Quartet, Thamks Schubert.

  • It's a GREAT quartet! It is very pity and sad that Thomas Kakuska(the violist)died:( He was a great violist.Anyways it is a excellent performance!

  • wow...

  • It's amazing what this music could move inside of me.
