why did it do so well?? It captured the essence of the decrepit side of metro manila, and a 'ground view' of the unique and exotic philippino (misspelling on purpose) tradition --- salvage. (I guess here, i never saw the film)
simple. the extras are unaware that about the cameras presence which added realism to the movie. The people from cannes thought that they were acting good and thought that the director is good.
Its a fluke ladies and gents. unfortunately the movie industry still prefers to use pretty, handsome but talentless artist.
Just saw this film tonight. It was terrible. Whats all the fuss about? Some guy works for a gang, watches them murder and hack up a woman, gets paid for cleaning up the mess, THE END. And it takes 1 hour and 20 mins for it to happen. Everything before that is mind numbingly boring.

@CircleofShit The technique of Mendoza in this film beats any commercial film by a topnotch American director any day. That is why Mendoza got the award. The angles, the atmosphere... superb. I know it's hard to appreciate a film like this, especially that we're all accustomed to watching the good things in life. However, art does not need to please everybody to be great. :)
@ludwig359 Sorry but I have to disagree. I really wanted to like Kinatay, but it was bad. the camera work was appalling, there was no 'atmosphere', it was incredibly dull. I thought my Filipino friends would like the film but they said it was boring. The plus side to the film whoever is the fx when they murder the woman.
It's just okay if you disagree. Critiques are subjective and yours doesn't have to agree with mine, or anybody else's. Guess I just appreciate how Mendoza made me a part of the movie (in as much as I tried to BE a part of the movie). It's like I was feeling the trauma of having to watch the murder first hand.

what I liked about this movie is the captured emotions from the actors even without saying a word. the movie was too graphic and disturbing to handle that I would still see the gruesome scenes even after watching the movie.
I'm really proud that kinatay won in cannes.I commend brilliante mendoza for making such a horribly tedious film to watch.DRAGGING.I really don't know what's all the hype w/ kinatay prob'ly it's the mixed reviews, or the conceited approach it took.It demands a lot from the audience, leaves the audience feeling alienated, resentful and broken, tired dog.maybe, the fuss w/ the film is it's efficacy in beating the audience in having a nice time watching a movie, but, just leave him/her tired.sucks!

No offense sa mga nagsasabi na this film exposes things that really happen. Nandun na tayo. It happens everywhere, hindi lang sa Pilipinas. But I would love to see a more positive Filipino films that are shown on film festivals. Wala na bang kayang gumawa ng films like Magnifico, Pagdadalga or Crying LAdies, which all are realisitic but didn't focus on the negative? Kinatay was panned becoz it didn't show anything other than the typical gore, poverty and violence.

no matter what shit others are saying, this is still one of a heck 'filipino pride ' movie. The story tackled in this movie was a sort of eye-opener that such crime exists. There are a lot of police brutality going on, this movie just exposes it. Lino Brocka didn't made it to Cannes and he aspires it, --but Dante Brillante just did it! Show some pinoy lovin' naman

simple. the extras are unaware that about the cameras presence which added realism to the movie. The people from cannes thought that they were acting good and thought that the director is good.
Its a fluke ladies and gents. unfortunately the movie industry still prefers to use pretty, handsome but talentless artist.

Just saw this film tonight. It was terrible. Whats all the fuss about? Some guy works for a gang, watches them murder and hack up a woman, gets paid for cleaning up the mess, THE END. And it takes 1 hour and 20 mins for it to happen. Everything before that is mind numbingly boring.
I'm all for supporting indie films but I just can't understand how this did so well at

@CircleofShit The technique of Mendoza in this film beats any commercial film by a topnotch American director any day. That is why Mendoza got the award. The angles, the atmosphere... superb. I know it's hard to appreciate a film like this, especially that we're all accustomed to watching the good things in life. However, art does not need to please everybody to be great. :)

@ludwig359 Sorry but I have to disagree. I really wanted to like Kinatay, but it was bad. the camera work was appalling, there was no 'atmosphere', it was incredibly dull. I thought my Filipino friends would like the film but they said it was boring. The plus side to the film whoever is the fx when they murder the woman.

It's just okay if you disagree. Critiques are subjective and yours doesn't have to agree with mine, or anybody else's. Guess I just appreciate how Mendoza made me a part of the movie (in as much as I tried to BE a part of the movie). It's like I was feeling the trauma of having to watch the murder first hand.

what I liked about this movie is the captured emotions from the actors even without saying a word. the movie was too graphic and disturbing to handle that I would still see the gruesome scenes even after watching the movie.

I'm really proud that kinatay won in cannes.I commend brilliante mendoza for making such a horribly tedious film to watch.DRAGGING.I really don't know what's all the hype w/ kinatay prob'ly it's the mixed reviews, or the conceited approach it took.It demands a lot from the audience, leaves the audience feeling alienated, resentful and broken, tired dog.maybe, the fuss w/ the film is it's efficacy in beating the audience in having a nice time watching a movie, but, just leave him/her tired.sucks!

No offense sa mga nagsasabi na this film exposes things that really happen. Nandun na tayo. It happens everywhere, hindi lang sa Pilipinas. But I would love to see a more positive Filipino films that are shown on film festivals. Wala na bang kayang gumawa ng films like Magnifico, Pagdadalga or Crying LAdies, which all are realisitic but didn't focus on the negative? Kinatay was panned becoz it didn't show anything other than the typical gore, poverty and violence.

no matter what shit others are saying, this is still one of a heck 'filipino pride ' movie. The story tackled in this movie was a sort of eye-opener that such crime exists. Baka habang pinapanood nila yan sa ibang bansa lalo silang natatakot sa pilipinas...
