You're mixing paragon and renegade options in your dialogues. It makes the character seem a little schizo. Sure you can do it with some things, but it's just odd on others.
The Spectre pistol is also great. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the 360 I originally played this game and I didn't have a memory card to save it, but I know I had sledgehammer rounds, and pretty sure I had an upgrade to improve accuracy or reduce overheating, and a combat sensor so the radar doesn't jam when you're fighting. And by the end of my second playthough with this Shepard I think I maxed out the talent points or came really close.

Not exactly. Since soldier is the only class that trains with assault rifles, I would suggest going for that one. And you don't have to max out training on it. Just make 150 assault rifle kills. Though the higher your training the better your aim and firepower will be. But when you create a new Shepard you're only allowed to choose one bonus talent.
Well Vangaurds have no training with assault rifles, just pistols and shotguns. I was awarded the assault rifle bonus during my first playthrough with my soldier Shepard (150 AR kills), which is why my Vanguard Shepard is really good with it (I have more talent points on it than my shotgun).
Vangaurds only have training in pistols and shotguns, this guy obviously got the "Assault rifle mastery" acheivment by scoring 150 kills with the rifle, unlocking assault rifle training for other classes can use assault rifles as well.
I'm pretty sure I was using sledgehammer rounds. Not sure why that would turn an enemy's health meter green, unless there's some kind of lasting effect.

I'm doing a Vanguard as well, but confused why why rating with an assault rifle is a '1' and yet when I switch to shotgun I jump to '60'.
This game has a decent learning curve, so what am I doing wrong?
