In real life (assuming she's lucky enough to get her assailant on their stomach, as she runs on the back she needs to deliberatly stand on the head. That's justified if an adult is attacking a child that young AND the head stand woulddisorient him enough for her to get away.

As in any style of karate there are shortcomings, but after the first kick in the nuts she would have time to run. The demo is just trying so show the many possibilities available. Fine it is easy to make fun, but how many of the people who have daughters, or sons, that know nothing are commenting.? Easy to trash something, hard to admit when someone has better skills than you.

At my TKD school our instructor teaches bible verses and moral codes. Even though I am agnostic I think that is important. However! My Master is vicious and likes how the bible is FULL of war.

You cant do self defense if your partner is holding back, in either speed or strenght. Think of the next step of the fight - an attacker wouldn't simply wait for her to turn around, he would spin her violently around himself, but in this video she does it herself. There would always be a second action coming afterwards, but in this video, as soon as he has done the first move, he stops - and he doesn't put a lot of strength into it.

It's pretty, and if she had been able to put some power into it I'd feel a lot happier. I have a friend who's taught kids how to defend against adults grabbing them, and what he taught them was basically eyes, throat, and groin, forget any other targets. And go nuts. Attitude is important, you can't be tentative. This was so stylized I'm not sure it's usable.

I'm torn as a tkd instructor. This is great because it shows coordination and basic understanding of self defense. But, it's unrealistic to expect this out of a small girl to do this to a grown man. It is unrealistic. I teach my students that the number one thing to do is run away and scream so that someone hears you. It's a great show, but it's not what we should be teaching our youth to do.

But ask yourself this, if a girl this age has NO self defense training or skills, how would it play out? Does not our training give us some possible options to try? My kids are trained to use even their voices (screaming) for self defense with strike points.

They may not win in a fight against a large assailant, but they will not go down easy. Then maybe you can help them.

I think the point is that the instructor is trying to do a few things. Firstly it's a demonstration so he has to entertain. Secondly he has to make the fundamentals fun for the kids to learn so i think he's doing a great job.
