When L voiced his intention to try out the notebook, thereby disproving the 13 day rule, and proving Light was Kira, Rem got desperate to protect Misa and realized the only way to put a stop to it would be to kill L and Watari, thereby killing herself as well. Like AllOfMex said, totally Light's fault.

@yinyang100100 lol that is true, but shingamis can't die if their name is written at all. The only way you can kill a shinigami is for them to save a loved one by writing the evil person's (who is threatening the shinigami's love) name into the death note. Like how Gelus died. He saved Misa from that evil guy. Though, if shinigamis could die by death notes, that would be interesting to see how that would work out. Lol :3.
