What do you think jousting is? The point is to break the lance on your opponent... If they happen to knock the other off, then more points are awarded. Did you think they would spear eachother?
@n641019 listen to tmwtorrent2.... listen to his wise words

The biggest thing about the RA jousting ( I've competed there since 2003) and other jousting in England is that the balsa tip is connected to 7.5 feet of virtually unbreakable lance base. Yes, the balsa impact is likely less than a 1-1/4" dowel, but the dowel has the opportunity to break further down, the solid balsa-tipped lance style won't, and it can unhorse an opponent when it connects. Since we get more points breaking the whole tip, we go for hits with the solid part every pass. Not wimpy.
There is nothing any less "real" about the RA jousting than any other type of jousting. Look at the videos on my channel and you'll see a lot of plenty real jousting there, mostly from the RA. Take a close look at the jousts from the Tower, where I broke my thumb--------jousting with balsa. Trust me, it's real.....it just looks easy because those that do it are very skilled and make it "look" easy.
i joust myself using fir and pine solid lances and have done some of the balsa.... there is a diference in the impact... agreed that skill is a major factor but material lets others play that may should not play sometimes
either way it is better than the glue ups that some theatrical troops uses with thier staged shows lol
Where were those much needed real jousters those real knights from Colorado in medieval times? oh wait... .... so that is why they called it the "New World" .... ah .. see I'm onto something there eh?
@JohnnyH1982 Conquistadors were in Colorado in the late 1500s. Many conquistadors thought of their (to them) fantastical journeys in the New World as chivalric stories come to life. There are accounts of conquistadors reading knightly tales while crossing the Atlantic! So taking some poetic liberties, you could say there were "real knights" in Colorado, heh. Still, I respect the RA. I think the dispute between styles of modern jousting is idiotic. Respect the warriors and the athletes.
dude people back "in the day" used softwood lances, real lances would easily perice the armor and instantly kill anyone inside. they didn't want to kill each other, if they did they did it as a duel with swords.
Great sound and video quality. I've been to this jousting, it's the real deal! Riders get hurt and everthing. Forget all that SCA stuff go to Leeds and see the real thing - best of all they have 2 international tournaments a year plus jousting every weekend durign the summer - Awesome!
Marvellous stuff!

brasidus 4 years ago 2
yes, shane adams brother told me they use closet dowels capped with copper pipe caps to help prevent dangerous splintering

ignorant comment... ?
I take it that you take offence in that balsa would is soft?
or that you have not been exposed to the heavier joust forms?
