Thanks for this video. I have been a Vikings fan since 1969 starting with this season, and in my opinion this was their greatest season even though it ended with a SB loss. That was sort of a one time fluke where they unfortunately blew the game off and didn't prepare for it properly. The Vikings ended up beating the Chiefs quite handily the beginning of the following season with essentially the same teams only without Joe Kapp who went to the Patriots. Thanks again for this vid
The '69 Vikings won the NFL Championship game 27-7 over Cleveland and like most of America at that time considered the Super Bowl more of an all-star game as the stands were only half full in those years and was not nearly the world spectacle it is today. The '69 Chiefs were also a great team but as good as they were they were still 13 point underdogs to the mighty Vikings. It's clear the Vikings underestimated the Chiefs in what was an anti-climatic game for them after becoming NFL Champs.
One of the all-time "mighty men" of the NFL. Joe's phrase that year was 40 for 60 meaning 40 men playing together for 60 minutes of football. The '69 Vikings were one of the greatest teams of all time winning 12 straight games in a 14 game season, scoring the most points in the NFL and permitting the fewest. That Purple Gang defense was one of the top 3 all-time setting every record that season. Joe's 7 td passes against Colts still an NFL record. The NFL Championship was biggest prize in '69.
If memory serves - #32 was Oscar Reed and had the nickname "The Seed". Not one of your more terrifying nicknames, I guess - if I'm right. Ah, memories...
@6400az Are you sure about that? I thought it was "Seed". But I was only 10-ish at the time. "The Sea" is just about as odd and un-intimidating anyway, I reckon. har har. Go Vikings! (Go and get a decent coaching staff, to start with?)
Yep, I'm sure. Been a fan since 69' and have collected many publications on the old Vikings. They all say" The Sea". Not sure why the nickname, but yea, not too intimidating
Oscar Reed, from Colorado. Had a running style similar to Duane Thomas. I thought he was a good back BUT, WAS prone to fumbling. This was showcased for all to see, in the worse of times. Remember the 4th an 1 in Superbolw VIII. Critical play, game was over after that truthfully.
search, "BEST VERSION Angelo Mosca & Joe Kapp Fist Fight HD," to see it up close & personal. Sorry but Kapp shouldn't have put the flower in Mosca's face. Agreed Mosca then over reacted, but sorry Joe, say it ain't so, Kapp should've walked away. Instead he belts Mosca who in his day, Kapp never would've attempted to do because Angelo would've crushed him. Mosca today cannot stand. It is why he uses his cane. Punching out someone disabled is tasteless.
why you keep calling this padded version of rugby "football", football is what British play with their foot and a ball, football. otherwise know by our north american friends as " soccer" ... You did it again America ha ha ha....
@6400az Always good to read your posts, my good man! I hope all is well with you and yours.... as for the Vikings: maybe next year? Even though I am getting tired of saying that, year in and year out! :-P
How come I can remember almost every name of the players when I see their number..but can't remember what I did 15 minutes ago?? I mean, this stuff is over 40 years old.. Getting old I guess..LOL
The ONE play... this single ONE play is the one that put the Vikings over the hump for the first time in their history !! In the playoff against the Rams it finally gave them the lead 21-20...but metaphorically, it pushed them inside realm of greatness for many years to come.
There where other great players wich we all loved and admired. Marshall, Bryant, Hilgenberg,Page, Eller, Gilliam, Tarkenton, Foreman etc. But, Joe Kapp was and will always be Mr. Minnesota Viking !
@MrRdyvale Many thanks! A little story: I remember a Vikings vs. Cowboys game where Roger threw a Hail Mary pass that was caught by Drew Pearson for a TD... I cried ( I was only 10 or 11)... One of those tough losses I remember as a Vikings fan...
I love what this team did for the franchise! I've been a loyal Vikings fan since the Grant years! Keep the Vikes at Minnesota as I can't see them moving to another city! I love those snow and rain games at the Met!
Although I was an ardent AFL fan (only because we could get the NBC signal on our antenna) , I had a healthy respect for the '69 Vikes. Whenever we could pick up the CBS signal, the Vikings were on and I got to know them like quite well. Great post. The perfect mix of photos and music.
@6400az Hello Jose! My good friend and faithful Vikings fan... I am so glad to hear from you again. I did close down my other channel (too much "stuff" going on). Anyway, I am going to keep this one smaller and finely tuned. I hope all is well with you and yours. Take care and always keep in touch!
