I have a question about image quality that I hope you can clarify. You say (and many other sources) that the 5100 has better image quality, yet when I see comparative pictures it seems like the canon is brighter, sharper, and has better contrast. I like having bright colors and clear contrast. I need a camera to capture my growing children both on video and photo. I have decided on the nikon because of a $90 difference. Did I make the right choice?
body controls- you can assign time shutter release button another function. I have WB. so it just lack ISO button comparing to canon. and as long I use auto ISO it doesnt really matter. image quality is better in nikon-slightly larger sensor, better color depth, better dynamic range! (canon's photos looks like from cell phone in bright light). nikon has better kit lenses. also basic nikon 50 or 35mm f1.8 lens are just better that canon's (also more expensive). nikon was obvious choice for me:)
i am doing mostly studio and nature photography and only midly interested in video but intensely interested in image quality and camera flexibility. can you suggest which one would be better for me? the worry i have with the nikon is the lack of buttons on the back and i dontknow how tedious adjustments would be.
All in all a good video were you seem to mention the differences. Though you did say something that is incorrect. The T3i has native 6400 ISO and not 3200 ISO as you said. And is extended to 12800.
My main concern about getting the Nikon was the issue with the AF-S lenses, but in the larger scheme of things, I traded the Canon for the Nikon because the lenses are going to out grow the body in years to come, and having the edge on image quality is more important. I've found Nikon to be sharper, so I'm also thinking down the line. I have smaller hands than the reviewer, so the Nikon feels fine, but that's a subjective judgement that the individual has to make.
I traded my T3i in for the D5100 after a couple of days of use due to the difference in image quality. The difference may not be a big deal to more users, but it was for me as I need the edge on image quality for the work I do, and the details that need to be clean. Just too much aberration on the Canon for me. Handling has been fine for me, and build quality feels a little studier on the Nikon, IMO. My opinion is get the Nikon for better image, and Canon for better Video. What's more important?
@QQQQcon Isn't the nikon hard to use? as in the layout, because many friends told me that its more difficult to use as in settings. (D5100). Im planning to get either or but don't know which.
@kartickm2013 Hands down, except for the small matter of image quality. The D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000, NEX-5N, and Pentax K5. This chip has better high ISO performance, and dynamic range.
what is the white thing on the d5100 on the bottom where the tripod is? I would really like to know because my tripod has scratched the bottom of my t3i.
For my preference I like the canon color reproduction and image quality( I use canon but am not a canon fan boy lol I like Nikon alot too). These cameras both have great features. Just about what you're looking for as far as specs and how it feels in your hand. I use canon because it's what I'm used to and it's what I've always used. I've used the t3i for semi professional work and it does fantastic. The canon t3i is about identical to the 7d in noise too. I've compared them multiple times.
I am looking at both of these models but I am primarily interested in the photography aspect of the camera & probably wont be making many videos. Is the advantage that the Nikon D5100 has in image quality significant enough for me to buy it for that reason?, because many people are stating that the 600D is an outright better camera. Good review by the way. :-)
Any idea of a camera that is better then both on them , that doesnt cost toooo much over this pricerange? any idea? thinking about buying one soon.. and i really want to buy the best money can buy. im willing to go up to around 1000-1200dollars.. any idea what i should go for?
Oh and one other thing, NO MANUAL control over video for the Nikon D5100 while you can manually adjust settings for Canon 600D. Video enthusiasts look specifically for manual control over video in their cameras.
actually, this both camera has a good item and awesome!! in my opinion, I do not view the advantage of a thing, I look at people who know use it with creativity and thinking. :D
@mjacalan I went to Camera West today, and asked about this very thing. The man behind the counter also said the 600D (T3i) DOES NOT have a built in motor. I don't know where QQQQCon got his info on this, but he should change his video to omit this error, or someone might, (like me) almost get something for a specific feature and have it turn out that it never existed in the first place. I would have been PISSED OFF. Otherwise, a pretty good review.
This will be my FIRST DSLR camera..i've never used one so i don't know exactly how to work it, but i need an honest opinion form someone on which one i should get as a beginner? I primarily want to use it for videos.
I don't like reviews like these. It all depends on the person. I have the canon t3i, the iso does not stop at 3200, it goes up to 6400, and I can take perfect photos at night, unlike what he claims. The Nikon d5100 is an amazing camera, and so is the Canon t3i. Why I chose the t3i over the d5100... video quality. So really, it all depends on the person behind the camera. Rather than the camera itself.
@zach3493 no.. it also depends on what you are going to be doing with it.. if you want superior video, then you go Canon. if not.. go Nikon.. not everyone knows everything about cameras, and photography,, hence the review.. for people like me who are starting out.. give the guy a break.. he has done nothing wrong.. and like he said.. why watch it then, if you don't like it. just more thing.. if it only depends on the person behind the camera, then why not go with the cheaper one?
do you think the light body of the D5100 will be well balanced with a 2.8 17-50 like a Sigma? Or should I go for a D90? I would like to photo performances as discretely as possible. I would go for the D7000 if I could afford it but I can't and I'm just beginning..
@QQQQcon Thanks for your reply, I'm still not sure which to go for.. I think I'm not the only one, it seems to be a common thread in the forums. I just feel the D90, though very good, is overpriced at the moment compared to the D5100. But I keep finding things out about the D5100 that I don't like, for example the leds for the focus points flash and go out instead of staying on and the loss of on-demand gridlines in the ovf.. Oh well, decisions...
Canon or Nikon? Pepsi or Coke? Xbox or PS3? Real Madrid or Barcelona? They are all good or they wouldn't be compared with the other. I use Canon, drink Coke, have a PS3 and support Real Madrid. But I could have easily chosen the other.
@raul7nz I prefer NIKON, Pepsi, have Wii & support Barcelona... but you know what it is good? Having choices, thank's to people like this guy, I decided to go for the D5100... Good Sample! canon if you do A LOT of videography, nikon for photography and if you just sometimes film some clips and stuff. so yeah, imo the nikon is better and even cheaper.
nikon is supah better, we always got better speedligths, more lenses, better fps, & Af, range, ISO, haha canon its expensive as hell :s & its just a joke nowadays...
To Transferases; so what your saying is that when you see a photo that you like, you can instantly tell if a Canon or Nikon was used to take the photo? If so...wow!! I'm impressed! People can choose what they want. Canon may blow away Nikon with their new camera, you just never know. If you already know Nikon is better, then why waist your time watching this video? Makes no sense.
Nikon is better period. They have better bodies, better optics, and even better speedlights. A 1200 D7000 will do better than a much more expensive canon 7D in basically all the important aspects... heck it even has much better AF than their $2700 5d mark ii. Canon is just a joke nowadays. In this comparison, D5100 wins for photography, better high ISO, faster, better AF, more dynamic range...
Which one is better for video? Replacing standard video camera.

It's fairly easy to choose cameras like these 2.
Want a good filming DSLR for short films and care maybe less for photography but want more options for video? Choose Canon
Prefer photo over filming with slightly better images but just like to shoot your standard home video on birthdays etc.? Go for the Nikon.
They are good.

Some points to make.
The D5100 lacks some basic stuff the Canon has:
No DOF on the Nikon
No wireless flash via on board
No HSS on the Nikon
Menu dive on the Nikon as it's not great button layout wise
Tiny viewfinder one of the smallest out there! (worse than many cheaper cameras)
The only real advantage with the Nikon is the good 16mp CMOS sensor, and faster fps (Canon are pretty mean with fps on their models)
Purely as a camera and functionality the Canon is unquestionably superior.
barryfitzgerald29 8 months ago 15
