  • Which one is better for video? Replacing standard video camera.

  • I have a question about image quality that I hope you can clarify. You say (and many other sources) that the 5100 has better image quality, yet when I see comparative pictures it seems like the canon is brighter, sharper, and has better contrast. I like having bright colors and clear contrast. I need a camera to capture my growing children both on video and photo. I have decided on the nikon because of a $90 difference. Did I make the right choice?

  • I am getting either one next week and I need to know which one is better, (:

  • So cute!! I wasn't looking at the cameras!

  • body controls- you can assign time shutter release button another function. I have WB. so it just lack ISO button comparing to canon. and as long I use auto ISO it doesnt really matter. image quality is better in nikon-slightly larger sensor, better color depth, better dynamic range! (canon's photos looks like from cell phone in bright light). nikon has better kit lenses. also basic nikon 50 or 35mm f1.8 lens are just better that canon's (also more expensive). nikon was obvious choice for me:)

  • i actually count more buttons on the nikons back than on the cannons, or am i wrong

  • i am doing mostly studio and nature photography and only midly interested in video but intensely interested in image quality and camera flexibility. can you suggest which one would be better for me? the worry i have with the nikon is the lack of buttons on the back and i dontknow how tedious adjustments would be.

  • @Reaper1544 image quality of both is about the same. Controls are different but I would say one is harder to use than the other.

  • All in all a good video were you seem to mention the differences. Though you did say something that is incorrect. The T3i has native 6400 ISO and not 3200 ISO as you said. And is extended to 12800.

  • My main concern about getting the Nikon was the issue with the AF-S lenses, but in the larger scheme of things, I traded the Canon for the Nikon because the lenses are going to out grow the body in years to come, and having the edge on image quality is more important. I've found Nikon to be sharper, so I'm also thinking down the line. I have smaller hands than the reviewer, so the Nikon feels fine, but that's a subjective judgement that the individual has to make.

  • I traded my T3i in for the D5100 after a couple of days of use due to the difference in image quality. The difference may not be a big deal to more users, but it was for me as I need the edge on image quality for the work I do, and the details that need to be clean. Just too much aberration on the Canon for me. Handling has been fine for me, and build quality feels a little studier on the Nikon, IMO. My opinion is get the Nikon for better image, and Canon for better Video. What's more important?

  • actually, it's not tough decision,, for me the image quality is the important,, so i easily go to d5100,,

  • @hofra01 image quality is not that different

  • @QQQQcon Isn't the nikon hard to use? as in the layout, because many friends told me that its more difficult to use as in settings. (D5100). Im planning to get either or but don't know which.

  • @BenjaminLucky13 I wouldnt say one is harder to control then the other, they are just different.

  • Great comparison video. I will be getting a T3i.

  • How big is the difference in battery life?

  • @ramb0101 Nikon has 50% longer battery life.

  • i cant wait to have my nikon d5100 on the 25th :) team nikon :))

  • he seems pro canon...but i will anytime agree Canon 550D wins hands dwn...

  • @kartickm2013 Hands down, except for the small matter of image quality. The D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000, NEX-5N, and Pentax K5. This chip has better high ISO performance, and dynamic range.

  • I"m going with the T3i.

  • Great video man! :D really useful information!

  • awesome review man!! thanks

  • what is the white thing on the d5100 on the bottom where the tripod is? I would really like to know because my tripod has scratched the bottom of my t3i.

  • @lyrics2025 that is the clip that attaches to my tripod head.

  • i got T3i guys but this both camera is amazing ! i anot gonna say t3i is better than d5100 cause they are both amazing!

  • the canon's ISO is actually expandable up to 12800and it preforms flawlessly in hig ISO ranges. From 100 to 6400 (12800)

  • If I dont care about auto-focus, can I use different lenses on the d5100?

  • @falconass001 yeah... it's a DSLR. All DSLR have interchangeable lenses.

  • @TechGeek95 I know haha, but the d5100 has the motor for autofocus in the lens, and I was confused on weather or not you had to have it

  • Quick question: t3i with 18-135 lens or D5100 with 18-55? Don't use video too much, booth in same price.

  • @Albertoluizrt I like the t3i better personally compared to the d5100

  • What camera are you using?

  • which one do u use ?

  • @jaiminsonu neither, this is just a review, I dont actually own them.

  • Nice vids but u need better audio quality

  • For my preference I like the canon color reproduction and image quality( I use canon but am not a canon fan boy lol I like Nikon alot too). These cameras both have great features. Just about what you're looking for as far as specs and how it feels in your hand. I use canon because it's what I'm used to and it's what I've always used. I've used the t3i for semi professional work and it does fantastic. The canon t3i is about identical to the 7d in noise too. I've compared them multiple times.

  • I am looking at both of these models but I am primarily interested in the photography aspect of the camera & probably wont be making many videos. Is the advantage that the Nikon D5100 has in image quality significant enough for me to buy it for that reason?, because many people are stating that the 600D is an outright better camera. Good review by the way. :-)

  • @Jaimeb14 the image quality is not that different

  • Comment removed

  • getting the t3i in a few days, for only $630

  • @QQQQcon is it worth the extra roughly 300$ for the nikon d7000 if im more focused on video?

  • @ohWaboosh canon is the best for video

  • Nice Review and really helpful!!! But I'm more into pictures portraits and landscape... should I take the Nikon D5100?

  • but canon has better white balance... LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Nikon D5100 much better for photos than Canon 600D. Canon little better on video. Nikon better price and Nikon over all has better Lenses over Canon.

  • Any idea of a camera that is better then both on them , that doesnt cost toooo much over this pricerange? any idea? thinking about buying one soon.. and i really want to buy the best money can buy. im willing to go up to around 1000-1200dollars.. any idea what i should go for?

  • @m3g1 nikon d7000

  • Oh and one other thing, NO MANUAL control over video for the Nikon D5100 while you can manually adjust settings for Canon 600D. Video enthusiasts look specifically for manual control over video in their cameras.

  • Yes Nikon has DOF and yes the Nikon D5100 is better as starter cam...simpler to use.

  • actually, this both camera has a good item and awesome!! in my opinion, I do not view the advantage of a thing, I look at people who know use it with creativity and thinking. :D

  • Canons does NOT have build-in motors in camera. They are all in the lenses.

  • @mjacalan I went to Camera West today, and asked about this very thing. The man behind the counter also said the 600D (T3i) DOES NOT have a built in motor. I don't know where QQQQCon got his info on this, but he should change his video to omit this error, or someone might, (like me) almost get something for a specific feature and have it turn out that it never existed in the first place. I would have been PISSED OFF. Otherwise, a pretty good review.

  • Canon Is Way Better ! Nikon's Suck !

  • @ayokidd22597

    another ignorant fanboy

  • proud of my D5100...**fullstop**

  • I FINALLY saved up enough money for either one.

This will be my FIRST DSLR camera..i've never used one so i don't know exactly how to work it, but i need an honest opinion form someone on which one i should get as a beginner? I primarily want to use it for videos.

  • @sundressesandknives canon all the way for video

  • Nice review, I'm buying the 600D.

  • what lens is on your camera?

  • @ediboyzee nikon and canon 50mm f/1.4

  • which camera do you recommend for making music videos??

  • @lmj4life between these two cameras the canon definitely wins in video.

  • I don't like reviews like these. It all depends on the person. I have the canon t3i, the iso does not stop at 3200, it goes up to 6400, and I can take perfect photos at night, unlike what he claims. The Nikon d5100 is an amazing camera, and so is the Canon t3i. Why I chose the t3i over the d5100... video quality. So really, it all depends on the person behind the camera. Rather than the camera itself.

  • @zach3493 then why are you watching, you dont have to let all of youtube know when you dont approve of a video and explain why.

  • @zach3493 no.. it also depends on what you are going to be doing with it.. if you want superior video, then you go Canon. if not.. go Nikon.. not everyone knows everything about cameras, and photography,, hence the review.. for people like me who are starting out.. give the guy a break.. he has done nothing wrong.. and like he said.. why watch it then, if you don't like it. just more thing.. if it only depends on the person behind the camera, then why not go with the cheaper one?

  • Hum...I was so..decided to buy the Canon T3i and I thought I read the ISO was higer but now for me it seems a little bit..low.

I have a small digital camera dn it has a higher ISO than the T3i and it conserns me a little..

Can I still get hq when I take pictures at night?

  • @Tuticrafts the high iso is great on the t3i, they are pretty close in quality (d5100 and t3i)

  • yeah! Thank's to you and other vidz I decided to get the NIKON D5100, YEAAAH BABY!!

  • Nice review

  • Hi,

do you think the light body of the D5100 will be well balanced with a 2.8 17-50 like a Sigma? Or should I go for a D90? I would like to photo performances as discretely as possible. I would go for the D7000 if I could afford it but I can't and I'm just beginning..

Thanks for any advice, I enjoy your videos :-)

  • @cerberusjf I think it would be alright

  • @QQQQcon Thanks for your reply, I'm still not sure which to go for.. I think I'm not the only one, it seems to be a common thread in the forums. I just feel the D90, though very good, is overpriced at the moment compared to the D5100. But I keep finding things out about the D5100 that I don't like, for example the leds for the focus points flash and go out instead of staying on and the loss of on-demand gridlines in the ovf.. Oh well, decisions...

  • Canon or Nikon? Pepsi or Coke? Xbox or PS3? Real Madrid or Barcelona? They are all good or they wouldn't be compared with the other. I use Canon, drink Coke, have a PS3 and support Real Madrid. But I could have easily chosen the other.

  • @raul7nz I prefer NIKON, Pepsi, have Wii & support Barcelona... but you know what it is good? Having choices, thank's to people like this guy, I decided to go for the D5100... Good Sample! Both Cams R really good, it's all about if u prefer better quality on vidz or pics.. nah! what I'm saying.. I have a camcorder for vidz so thatz why I choosed NIKON for PICS! have a good day!

  • @raul7nz lol i have nikon drink coke xbox and madrid :D BTW HALA MADRID

  • @raul7nz coolest comment ever !

  • Was it just me hearing bad or he burps in the video???

  • @EdSanthiago ???? what difference does it make?? you're commenting on whether or not you heard his body make a noise?? what does that have to do with anything of the subject matter in the video??? some fucking people.

  • What about best video quality for low light and can you manual exposure while taking video with both cameras???

  • I subscribed to you and hope to see more video bout these dslr in future!

  • @oemelmaster where did you find that package?

  • jesus! the canon/nikon fight is as bad as xbox/ps3! ITS PERSONAL PREFERNCE

  • For beginners:

Get the Nikon if you like mostly taking pictures (especially in dark lighting)

Get the Canon if you like mostly taking videos.

Both cameras are good. Don't choose because of the brand name, choose what suits you.

  • You morons....watch CAMERALABS for more accurate comparison and review of this cameras...your proof is your photo, not your gear...EMPTY BOTTLES SOUND NOISIER!

  • The man made a good attempt to review! There will always be stupid canon/nikon arguements

  • even with night time photography i rarely ever shoot past 400iso

  • Loved the video but i would never get the nikon because of no manual video controls like iso and shutter speed in video mode. Plus lile you mentioned canons HD video is much better than the nikon's

  • @QuickScoper714 Who gives a shit, DSLR's were made for taking photographs, not videos, and he clearly states that the Nikon is better for photographs, therefore making it a better DSLR. If you are into taking videos, then get a god damn camcorder, which will take much better videos then any DSLR.

  • after all these, i'll stick with sony alpha. lolz

  • Some points to make.

The D5100 lacks some basic stuff the Canon has:

    No DOF on the Nikon

No wireless flash via on board

    No HSS on the Nikon

Menu dive on the Nikon as it's not great button layout wise

Tiny viewfinder one of the smallest out there! (worse than many cheaper cameras)

The only real advantage with the Nikon is the good 16mp CMOS sensor, and faster fps (Canon are pretty mean with fps on their models)

Purely as a camera and functionality the Canon is unquestionably superior.

  • @barryfitzgerald29 are you dumb , of course nikon has depth of field ( DOF) , your just a fanboy ,you have no idea what your talking about in fact it has a bit more than canon because its less cropped.

  • @stavyros

Fact remains it does not have a DOF preview button ;-)

  • @stavyros

yeah he is indeed a fanboy. an ignorant one at that

  • @barryfitzgerald29 No DOF? Explain please.

  • @barryfitzgerald29 Omg are you serious? Of course it has DOF. -.-

  • @barryfitzgerald29

    canon mark

  • @barryfitzgerald29 What do you mean by no DOF on the D5100. Doesn't that have to do with the lens more than the camera?

  • I don't know why people keeps going "nikon is better, canon is better". Do what Conor did which is try both for a while. Even if Nikon is a better camera, I just can't stand holding it on my hands; size and functionality wise.

Either camera you get, you'll develop amazing photos as they are both amazing. Nikon or Canon will never release crappy cameras so people should stop bashing either one.

It all comes down to which feels right on your hands.

  • if i go with the nikon d5100 which lenses should i buy with it? i'm an amateur so i don't really know the differences.

i found one offer for roughly 1000 bucks, it includes a 18-55 mm VR Lens Kit + Nikon 55-300mm F4.5-5.6 G ED VR + 8 GB memory card + spare battery (nikon EN-EL14)

    will that be alright?

  • @oemelmaster I would go for the nikon 18-200mm if price was not an option, if it is then that kit is good, but if you get into photography you will probably need to upgrade.

  • @QQQQcon thank you for your response

  • @oemelmaster Go for 18-105 VR its better than geting a kit lens and reselling it

  • canon if you do A LOT of videography, nikon for photography and if you just sometimes film some clips and stuff. so yeah, imo the nikon is better and even cheaper.

  • nikon is supah better, we always got better speedligths, more lenses, better fps, & Af, range, ISO, haha canon its expensive as hell :s & its just a joke nowadays...

  • To Transferases; so what your saying is that when you see a photo that you like, you can instantly tell if a Canon or Nikon was used to take the photo? If so...wow!! I'm impressed! People can choose what they want. Canon may blow away Nikon with their new camera, you just never know. If you already know Nikon is better, then why waist your time watching this video? Makes no sense.

  • Nikon is better period. They have better bodies, better optics, and even better speedlights. A 1200 D7000 will do better than a much more expensive canon 7D in basically all the important aspects... heck it even has much better AF than their $2700 5d mark ii. Canon is just a joke nowadays. In this comparison, D5100 wins for photography, better high ISO, faster, better AF, more dynamic range...

  • @NLS87 Name ALL the errors please

  • thanks!
