The reason for pigs being "unclean" has NOTHING to do with the quality of the animal for consumption. @ltmikepowell I personally think it's because Muhammad did not know about the reason for animals being clean or unclean, and heard mostly Jews disputing with Christians over pigs. In the same way, Muhammad also put no restriction on sea creatures. It seems to make the most sense, as camels also are specifically mentioned by name as ceremonially unclean in Leviticus 11:4 and Deuteronomy 14:7, along with rabbits and the "shaphan", which is usually reckoned the hyrax.

@ltmikepowell I never looked into Buddhism, but someone gave me the idea that a more strictly-observant Buddhist couldn't eat any animals. But then again, maybe that's like some of those Jews... What I described was only from the Bible about unclean animals, but the Jewish speculations and oral traditions make it more constrictive to the point it doesn't seem to be intended to be. For instance, they can't eat the hip because of Jacob wrestling with the angel, and won't eat past a certain rib!

In some sects of Christianity, they do follow the teaching almost similar to Judaic and Islam, unclean animals. Although most the Christians that I met do eat pork anyway. Hmm, really need to met an Orthodox Jew to find out further information. But then again, I CAN'T land in Tel Aviv Yafo.
